- The story goes that the manor house and Kronendal farm were owned for a short time during that period by the Cloete family. The owner, Daniel Cloete, had a very pretty daughter, Elsa. She fell in love with a soldier from a British garrison stationed in Hout Bay. However, their love was forbidden since he was British and she was Dutch. The closest contact they had was at secret meetings at the front windows of the homestead. Eventually, in desperation, the soldier hanged himself from one of the oak trees in the avenue across the road from Kronendal that can still be seen today. Elsa, it is said, died of a broken heart. Around sunset, they say, you can sometimes see a man standing among the oaks looking longingly at the Kronendal building and every so often there is a young woman wearing an old-fashioned blue dress looking out of one of the windows. Elsa’s ghost has also been seen frequently in the building itself.
The estate of Kronendal was part of land granted to Willem Basson in 1713, although it was only developed as a farm towards the end of the century. Its farmhouse was probably built after 1777 when the property was bought by Jacobus Bierman. It was declared a National Monument under old NMC legislation on 9 September 1960.
Now days it is the home of Deus Ex Machina au.deuscustoms.com/pages/stor...

I used to work at kitima. Elsa and her lover soldier spirit is still there only people with a close connection to this building and its history know, i swear you can feel her presence 😂. One night i was working in the vip room (as you walk in by the main door you first room on the left and then right into the small room that had a beautiful chandelier) , and after all my tables had left i was cleaning up alone the other waiters were in the lounge or the top bar, and the lights were flickering like crazy. It wasn't scary because it wasn't a malicious presence. But it was a little unnerving.
Kitima the previous owner set Elsa's table every single night. With a full meal and red wine and water. On Sundays Elsa and her lover would get tea instead of the wine. Our thai chefs would set her table beautifully.
Many times the picture frames would be skew 😂 so many different unexplainable things happened in this house. And i was privileged to work there.
We all respected Elsa and her lover we always told ger story to our guests. I miss this house so much 😪 i dont live in cape Town anymore.
I will definitely visit soon.
