Ahhh, Ashland!! Tow truck operators best friend 😁
*guy stops his car right in front of the tracks*
Me: Ooof, that was close, but at least ppl in Ashland are getting smarter.
*guy drives into the tracks slowly*
Me: *facepalms*
Not guy, girl.
Probably saw the lights of trains coming from both directions. “Objects in mirror are closer than they appear”. I’m not going to lie, I would probably have to change my shorts if that was me.
Call me warped, but I think it would have been funny if the Amtrak engineer had stopped just a foot or two short of the red car in Ashland for dramatic effect.
I was thinking the *exact* same thing lol
jaja! That would have resulted in some soiled underwear for sure! Loved the way the engineer was making a point with the horn as he cruised by 🫀🫁🧠
🧐Let them keep right on riding on these tracks. They just gonna ram right through them.
Engineer Bob! Stop the train!
The local police must be really tired of responding to calls of cars on the tracks at this point lol
Not a brain cell between those that got out that car! Is reverse gear that hard to find? - UNREAL!
I was about to mention how hard it is to drive back up after driving off the crossing, but then I saw what happened and now I have to agree with you.
Was Al K Hol driving that car?
Agreed! Can't believe no one thought of backing off the tracks!.......scary!
OMG...any one remember 3 on the tree! Lol Manual 5 spd H-l my R was bottom right
obviously some people only know one way.....forward.....way to go.....:-)
AND - we wonder why Intelligent Aliens haven't landed! There's an invisible Flying Saucer stationed over Ashland, and they're falling off their control seats laughing!
Coincidentally I was on the Ashland camera as it happened. Glad they're safe, so now I can say "too cool".
Much like that Durham, North Carolina can opener underpass. "The Can Opener". Doesn't matter that there are electronic signs telling the truck driver how low the bridge is, with flashing lights and turn here....The truckers still think if they just go fast enough, (or something) they will fit. Video cameras like in Ashland catch it all.
They post those on the "yovo68" channel. Every wreck.
Since it keeps happening at night, they need to glue down a bunch of RED reflectors in that whole area - similar to what you find on the highway. The red reflectors would light up when hit by headlights and with enough of them you would feel the car bumping across them. Wonder if Amtrak's Autotrain radioed the other Amtrak train to stop.
Yes! Yes! 10000 IQ!
Absolutely agree that better signage is necessary.
This is happening repeatedly and are they waiting for a tragedy to take place? This really isn’t funny anymore. I was picturing the trauma to the car passengers (and their families), the emotional trauma to the train engineers, the work (and trauma) for first responders, the cost to the city. Come on, Ashland.
That's what I said. I am from Ashland. People come here not knowing how to make that turn and end up on the tracks
needs brighter lights in the whole of the intersection.
People just need to get good
I was watching it while it happened. They were yelling at auto racks trying to get them to stop 😂
Haha, I'm not surprised whatsoever with that idiocy considering their prior actions. Unreal.
There was a train from the other direction they were waving at
yeah...i bet that really helped.....:-)
@@rearspeaker6364 yeah...and it sucks out the brains of drivers that get near it......:-)
There are a number of problems with that intersection but many of the potential remedies would probably interfere with railroad operations, and we can't have that either. I have thought that maybe more street lights in this area would help at night but if too much light then the engineers may have issues seeing the signals they need to see as well. I am just amazed how this driver stopped, indicating they recognized there was no actual street in front of them, but then when the train comes they are all complacent about what to do and when. I thought that car was gonna be crushed and the occupants with it. I am grateful that this video exists if only to educate the general public what NOT to do when crossing the street.
Maybe banning turns from the east-west street at that intersection would help. "YOUR GPS IS WRONG!! DO NOT TURN HERE!".
should just be an automatic license termination...Ashland could use better signs and maybe just light up the area better but its not that hard to not turn onto train tracks
Exactly. These people must not know the area or live there, because I imagine everyone who lives there knows there are tracks there! Even then, how are people not cognizant to seeing tracks, seeing the RR sign or guard rail crossings even when up?
@@Keikdv Don’t know why they went forward they weren’t all the way on the tracks, should have backed up.
i've never been there...but the few videos from there show the place well lit and cared for.....model town....love it.....
Love the way the guy in the recovery truck just gets in the car and drives it off the tracks. Presumably the occupants of the car were too dumb to think of trying that.
Thanks for watching another episode of Ashland's deadliest catches. The Amtrak crew was not sleep at the wheel. Thank You.
Them people at Ashland were seriously lucky that this isn't a 70mph line (well it is but not in Ashland) and they're even more lucky the train wasn't on the same tracks as the car
I've been on that Amtrak a few times -- you're right, outside of Ashland it hits 70. Then 90 north of Doswell. We were cruising at 119 for quite awhile too, before DC. I want to say we maxed out at 121.
What really surprised me is they didn't even get out of the car. They are so lucky to be alive.
@@johnrhansonsr But I thought they did - 2 out of the three of them were waving at the train. One ever ran toward the Northbound Amtrak as the Southbound one was going by. I think they're most lucky it wasn't a freight train.
@@EliChristman Technically I guess you are right. However, two of the riders (fr passenger and rear passenger) departed the vehicle very late. Sorry for the confusion but that's what I meant. Thanks for clearing the air. Have nice holiday season.
She was lucky that the Amtrak was there. I'm sure the conductor radioed the other train to stop in time.
Won’t miss every grab bag you guys post! One quick and awesome grab bag! 👍🙂
Love the eyes on the car at Ashland! It looks as shocked as we all are seeing the third one in nine days run onto the tracks.
All they had to do was reverse left or right, not drive straight on into the tracks 😅😑
Twice.
Yup.
Okay…ANY reason as to why this person even did this at all? Blind driver?? And for the love of God, just back the car up!!
Where is the common sense here? Drivers like this should not be driving. Scary knowing people on the tracks like this are allowed to drive
Does anyone on Ashland know if there is a no-left sign? A sign stating "YOUR GPS IS WRONG. NO LEFT TURN!" would do wonders.
Conductor to Engineer: "Hey where we at, what town is this?"
Engineer: "You know, I'm not sure, wait, Ashland for sure!"
🔰🇺🇸 - They town/city council really needs to address this along with the railroad for a permanent solution
And there is a very easy solution, too, and inexpensive.
🔰🇺🇸 @@brucestambaugh - What’s your fix you think ?
@@65gtotrips Thin reflective plastic posts that are placed between the tracks and on either side of the tracks to catch the drivers' attention that this is not a road. These markers can be placed only inches apart and would not interfere with the trains. The posts come in white, yellow, and red.
@@brucestambaugh 🔰🇺🇸 - Yes❗️
You know they still have problems with the bridge in North Carolina that was raised to 12'4" from 11'8"?
Love the yellow coat salute.
Great quick Grab Bag! 👍
NJ: I have the most dangerous drivers
MA: no I have the most dangerous
Ashland VA: Amateurs
MA: WHAT WAS THAT PUNK?
Ashland VA: AMATEURS
😂😂I like that
No excuses for this driver. They stopped, had plenty of time to look it over, even started to back up and then when the lights came on they just charged. That driver should lose their license and have to complete a driver education course to get it back.
As for Ashland, how about installing a pair of crossing gates ACROSS THE TRACKS that are normally down and raise when the crossing gates activate? This would present a physical barrier to people turning onto the tracks, but would clear the line when a train is detected.
Great idea! You should present your idea to the department of transportation.
or maybe you should apply for a job on the ashland council and townplanning comitee...:-)
@@stratman9449 I don't think they're hiring Texans right now.
Finally! People wave at an approaching train and it can stop!!
What is interesting is that they stopped while still on the pavement, then drove ahead onto the tracks instead of backing up.
I guess Ashland enjoys the attention they get for this stuff. Every incident draws attention to the city, but for the wrong reasons. This driver was incredibly fortunate. You would think the locals there would know all about this intersection by now unless alcohol is involved. I don't see why they can't put some type of barrier there to prevent this, unless CSX wont allow it. Maybe those posts that retract down into the ground. They could be up when no trains are present and retract when the signals are activated. As we see with wrong way crashes on the interstate, reflectors don't work. It would have to be a physical barrier.
I'm Truly Speechless! :)
Hey i was on the jonesborough railcam
the city should not do anything to fix this, I like seeing these videos.

I think the googly-eye car at 04:00 is channeling OSCAR the Can from LaPlata.
First the Devious Licks challenge, and now the Ashland railway tow truck challenge.
Its obvious that there is a problem in Ashland with lines on the road, signage, something that the city needs to correct.
Well Ashland making up for lost time 😁😁
I wonder if the Rail Road in Ashland, VA would be wise to put a couple of crossing barriers across the tracks and set to open only when a train is approaching? It seems like once a week a car gets stuck on the tracks.
I see all sorts of comments about what the City or the RR "should do" from gates, to paint, to reflectors or whatever...... What about the consciousness a driver SHOULD HAVE driving a car. These drivers get what they deserve not paying attention. Quite a number of cities in my area on different lines have this very same configuration and not nearly as many problems.
I agree, put the responsibility where it belongs for a change.
The railroad company needs to redesign the barriers to work horizontally, thus: close the tracks to enable vehicle movement, then in advance of the train arrival, the barriers move horizontally to close the crossing to vehicles.
Fraternity row is one block away at Randolph Macon.
Seriously??
Google didn't tell them to deploy their high-rail equipment.
"And in other news, Cannabis sales are reported to have increased by 485% in the town of Ashland, Virginia and just in the past ten days. Authorities are currently investigating as to any possible negative consequences."
Unbelievable!
7:54 I have seen a train like that before, just that it was a CN/UP Mix with 2 auto cars.
Would I be feasible to concrete a 10m radius further out from the crossing to enable lost souls to back up or do a u turn off the tracks? Have this area clearly marked that this area is for emergency only and driving here would attract a large fine....(I know they don't read signs.)
They urgently need to arrange a gate to prevent cars from entering the tracks.
Wow, how many does this make in the last 30 days?
Ashland needs to put 1 or 2 more left turn arrows above the 1 that's there along with leader lines for the correct left turn roadway.
"I made a calculated decision, but man am I bad at math." - Ashland drivers, apparently
Were there 2 of these in Ashland yesterday? Last night the car was on the other track.
im the 1,00th viewer!
I like Santa in the Santa Fe.
Looks like there need to be some traffic safety changes at that Ashland, Virginia RR crossing location. They need to put up green arrow traffic signals that only allow traffic to go thru and turn right on the road crossing the RR tracks. The road next to the RR tracks would have the regular green ball signals. Paint the intersections at the tracks with junction box markings so that cars won't be blocking the intersection at the RR tracks when the traffic signals are red and when the RR crossing signals are flashing. Also have better lighting at that intersection at night. Maybe the fools will see the RR tracks better at night and won't accidentally drive and get stuck on the RR tracks.
Seems like Ashland is going for the world record, or something.
Ugh Everytime In Ashland
It looks like there’s a left turn lane that STILL hasn’t been blocked off, since that went to the one way street on the other side of the tracks…
Ashland roads need to redesigned.
All I've seen of the Ashland roads are from this channel, but maybe they could start with some flashing ground lights like for crosswalks but on all the time along the white line that blocks the crossed out area, probably a lot more cost effective than ripping up roads in what looks like Old Town?
@@Tristan_S346 there is no way to get rid of that intersection, it is the main way through to 95...there are so many trains these days that lines get backed up and easily add 10 minutes to a trip...of course there are other crossings a quarter mile north and south of that main one! No idea why more people don't use them...I almost always do.
0:28 quite a few Hobby Lobby trailers on one train! It's a shame they don't sell models of those trailers at their stores, or even much trains beyond Bachmann starter sets and a sparse amount of track and scenery
2:12 he was doing good until he decided to drive forward. Thankfully the train was on the other track and the other one stopped. The City of Ashland needs to invest in putting both directions of Railroad Avenue onto one side of the tracks
6:08 NS high hood geep and a UP AC6000CW on the same train
7:12 ATSF steam locomotive 2913 got some Christmas Decorations

Seriously, I'm tempted to travel half way cross the country to drive in Ashland at night. I'm wondering if there is something fundamentally wrong there that makes folks think they need to drive down the tracks. Got to be some sort of illusion of pavement or something
Me too! From the camera perspective, one theory I have is that tracks are bounded by one ways (at least partially), and I think that confuses drivers into turning too early and on to the tracks. Still think it’s ridiculous though, and still want to see for myself 😅
seems so much more frequent since they blocked up the road (left turn) after the crossing, seems people cant see why if they want to go left and the roads closed then its onto the tracks time, hard to fathom their reasoning
Some people driving small vehicles have no grasp what RR tracks are and trains operate. In my 50+ years of driving everything from motorcycle to 18 wheelers. I always approach and cross tracks with great safety. Thank God a tragedy was averted.
Lol yip has to be the left no punt intended 🤣
I love your videos and videos love you love love you and your love love you love love you and your love love you love love you
These people need a sign
Not again
1.
Lots of comments about some sort of movable barriers that are up when no train, then down for the train. No way the RR would ever allow such a thing. To much opportunity for malfunction.
However, some sort of flashing red LED's at pavement level maybe?
Or just pave the over the track ala LaGrange?
I only think it's funny because they stopped. They looked down the rail and knew it was a track. Then decide to drive forward anyways. I'm guessing there was a second of panic when the gates came down and they saw the train coming at them. But still don't understand why they thought driving off the road onto the track, at the train, was the best option.
They were so lucky that the Auto Train was on the other track
2:00 i bet if they put a crossing gate that stays down then goes up when the train passes it will prevent people from getting stuck on the tracks or find themselves not knowing what to do because there's no road. 🤔
Yeah the brain trust that is ashland
At this rate, Ashland gonna have its own channel: Car vs Track! Smh………
I thought it was the seniors who are supposedly easily confused!
Must be in the air......
Does the police department in Ashland give citations to these people who get on the tracks
Ashland: The entity who paints the diagonal lines on the sidelines of the crossing needs to commit to frequent repainting or an alternate marking on the crossing's driving surface between the tracks. Viewpoint through the camera shows faded or poor markings right where the automobiles tend to turn onto the railway, making it harder to alert against making the left turn.
If you pull up street view, it’s really baffling how this is happening. It’s not it’s a big or two lane road on the other side they’re trying to get to. And it’s actually barricaded off which you can see in the railfan feed. They should paint the entire concrete/asphalt around the tracks a glaring caution yellow, not just stripes, just solid block of color.
Honestly having that left-turn lane so early is part of the problem. It should be a divided road or have a median right near the crossing which would provide more of a barrier to deter turning early. And there should be a light, with a left-turn signal, which is timed with the crossing.
flashing leds.Pretty simple ashland.
I don’t get it. The little red car stopped and sat there a minute or so. Why didn’t they just back up?
I'm surprised the towing company haven't installed a direct line by the side of the crossing. 🤓
Maybe they monitor the Live Train Cam??
1:48 - Roads where we're going we don't need roads
🌷🍂🇮🇳🌷🍂
Nice
Ain't no way its that dark out like that bruh.
Someone is going to get killed in Ashland if they don't make some kind of traffic pattern change here soon. These folks would not have made it out if the train was on their track. 😬 Looking at streetview it is pretty obvious why this is happening. Horrible traffic pattern here. The lane opens up right before the track and says, "left turn only". It should not be two lanes through the track. Make it one lane again. The center lane should be yellow barred through the tracks, then open it up after the tracks. The city could get sued for this horrible traffic pattern and they can't say they didn't know about it since people are doing this almost every day.
Stops then goes anyway???? What are they thinking? Do the police ask them? Does anyone know what they say????
Looked like a scene from Men in Black. Dressing in black at night like trying to see a black cat in a coal hole.
7:55 ... whats that imagine seeing that
Did anyone call the RR phone number on the blue sign?
Oh, a morning, one-day grab bag? Alright, let's see what's in store, fellow railfans!
U did flag down train guess what it came back Funny
Because frantically waving your arms will help the train stop…
I made the first clip :)
been seeing you 0n VR cam at Lap- you wondered if made the grab bag & you did!
5:58 That green car looks shocked 👀 hope that flatbed driver/ company got paid. Where are these people going? I mean it’s well lit up 🤷♀️🤦♀️🙈 1:50 looks well lit up and clear to me. 🤷♀️ where they’re going.
I have no idea why that allow anyone to make left hand turns on to those roads. Wouldn't it make sense to do straight or right turn only?
They had plenty of time to back up.
At what point do drivers think it’s a good idea to drive on the railroad tracks?
How do they NOT see the tracks??
And then. Try an flag down a train on the other track going the other way.
🔰🇺🇸 - Hmm, let’s see…run directly into the path of a train waving your arms…
Ashland really needs to have their drinking water checked for hallucinogens.
I hope the drivers have to pay for all the trouble they cause, I'm sure that Amtrac could have just nudged the car up onto the road.
This is crazy. Who in the world comes to a train crossing and turns in the direction of the RR tracks??? Makes me wonder if some of these folks aren't doing this on purpose. :/
