You watch this from front to back and there has never been a greater exhibition of drumming anywhere. This is the most amazing piece of drumming I have ever seen. That anyone can pull this off live within the context of such complex music is astounding. One mistake and you are off the one and done. This was superhuman as is Dave Weckl.

He's an australian guy who studied at GIT, and pioneered a speed picking technique we now refer more commonly to as "sweeping". My guitar teacher knows him on a personal level and i've been able to talk to him on 2 occasions when he's been in Melbourne, he's a real down-to-earth guy with a mass of musical knowledge.
To me...the funniest thing about this clip(s) (gotta check out part 1 also) is that these musicians hardly break a sweat doing this.... and internally crackin jokes with each other. Always and forever pheonominal.

All these guys are at the top of their games....but if I had to pick one star of the show, I say it's Dave on drums....by a narrow margin. He's never just "coasting" or filling. Everything he's doing is to propel the musical narrative.
dave's swing is so strong and pulsating!!!! there's no flatlining to his swing!!!! very powerful.....some guys swing, but dave's swing has such a powerful feel to it. he talks through it.
I challenge any guitarist that thinks they've got chops to play the head and finale of this tune. It sounds easy. It's not. Gambale said in an interview that he was playing at his personal best during this tour, and that the music was the most challenging he's ever played. As for Weckl and Chick at the end....just amazing. I"m stunned every time I watch this.
Chick Corea was an icon when I first picked up a musical instrument some 40 years ago. I do not know these other players he has on stage here but my jaw has just been glued to the floor permanently, My only comment is "no" I do not have a match for the Godfather of fusion jazz and I doubt there will ever be one

Try playing the head of this tune on guitar, or the chorus. Then play Franks solo. He's in a class of his own. I tried closing my eyes while listening to this. I felt like I was in a busy market making conversation to the locals. That's how powerful this music is lol
I saw George Benson and his superb band 15 years ago. The sounds was perfect on every instrument/vocal except on George's guitar! Very muddy. I was stunned that the soundman didn't fix that. The performance was amazing...just poor guitar sound. Weird.
I can't imagine another drummer capable of catching Chick Corea's phrasing that way on the go.. Thanx for Dave Weckl!! And thanx lalobaqtas for this wonderful videos!!

Gambale tells the story that he went to an advertised audition for Chick. Pattitucci said that other guitar players seemed scared, but Gamble was the best prepared and ready and just nailed it. But no one notified him for a week while he was going crazy.

I love Weckls playing and all but Im even more amazed by his sweet mullet. It never moves and is always perfect. He and the Donald have obviously shared some hair styling secrets
Chick remains my favorite musician since i was introduced to him in 1979. But how about Frank's flying fingers, and Weckl....well there's not much you need to say about Dave's legend. If i were ever to turn anyone on to Chick's music of the 80's, it would be with this song. WOW!!!!!!
Bass Player is Mike Pope like mentioned before. Ric Fierabracci has also played bass for the Elektric Band from time to time. Dave never ceases to amaze me.

This was such a killer band, definitely unique for the individual sheer talent of each musician and also the way they perfectly complement each other. It's kinda sad because I do not believe we will ever hear fusion played like THIS. A Hall of Fame performance! And Gambale, that right hand...I don't know what to say.
