fastlaps has them as 6th, but there are also records from Global Time Attack running the same config (where the plaid would be 8th), so in the mix, they are a pretty solid top 15 - 20 with room for improvement!
Why the drastic difference in speed crossing the finish line? Did it go into limp mode? When starting the lap, you crossed the line at nearly 140mph, but when crossing it at the end of the lap, only around 115, seems like it was really dragging across the line at the end
112F is just too hot. The air is thin, so air breathing engines would also gasp. There's also, room for improvement, as flooring it in this car is a lot more immediately consequential than doing the same in a McLaren Senna.
if you removed the spoiler and diffusers probably could, just because it's probably 1000 pounds lighter than stock, but as is those add way too much drag
Wouldn't it be better with upgraded brakes and bigger brake disks for racing? Surely the standard ones are having to do a huge job slowing that beast down.
Definitely seconds left in it. For a cooler day and when that also brings a more predictable balance for a driver to work with. And it's fair to expect much more on Yokohama slicks and all this prep. A stock Model 3 can hang with a 458 Italia, the Plaid I suppose will be hanging with beefier track cars such as a Nissan GT-R and possible faster one than that. Such a race prep ought to take out many seconds more.
Rumor has it you are working in conjunction with Tesla on a drag race and track version of the Plaid, much like Shelby did with Ford 50 years ago...any comment, or simple denial?....Needless to say there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of high performance enthusiasts out here that would simply love the opportunity to own one!
Amazing Plaid! How sweet the sound That saved a man like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see! ’Twas Plaid that taught my heart to fear, And Plaid my fears relieved; How precious did that Plaid appear The hour it was conceived. Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come; ’Tis Plaid hath brought me safe thus far, And Plaid will lead me home. Elon has promised good to me, His Word my hope secures; He will my Shield and Portion be, As long as Plaid endures. Yea, when this FSD shall fail, And battery life shall cease, I shall possess, within this car, A life of joy and peace. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine; But Plaid which led me here below, Will be forever mine. When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing Plaid’s praise Than when we’d first begun.
Congrats on fast time , still boring to death tho 😴 One guy asked about Nurbergring, that would be interesting to see if it can make it without melting the wires and batteries .
I’ve read all the comments and I now have a professional race car driver’s degree license! I also agree he needs to clean up his lines and I can most likely post a time better than this “dirty lines helmet” guy!
McLaren is also designed for the track, this is just meant to be a luxury sport sedan. If Tesla made a track specific car it would certainly do better. The shape of the Model S (even with aero kit) is extremely slippery which lends itself to high acceleration but poor cornering
@@davidsosnak2968 the bodywork is the limiting factor here, it's designed for straightline speed and "fuel" efficiency, not cornering, because downforce is very unimportant for daily driving. if you look at the shape of a McLaren it has downforce designed into the bodywork of the car, so it needs very little modification for high cornering ability. they're just different tools for different purposes, really. The powertrain definitely has the capability to outrun any stock McLaren, it just isn't in the right vehicle to do it.
Do you plan on getting over the pond to the Nürburgring?
That would be interesting to see!
That is in the plans and was stated on Twitter 👍🏾
Don't think it would be that impressive, the rimac could probably do well but even that wouldn't break any records
Looks like it will be coming within the next few days, they posted on their Instagram that they’re at the Nurburgring
Thanks for the opportunity, UP! This Plaid rips!
Way to hold on to all 1000ponies sliding out of the hairpin down the esses! And it freakin held 100mph+ through riverside!!
Looks like this is the second fastest time on this track? Rad, Craig and the UP Team! Nicely done.

This would be one of the slowest cars if it was in a global time attack in an Unlimited class. People need to spot comparing this to stock cars.
That was crazy!
Could probably pull another second and a half out of that run with tech improvements and cleaning up the lines.
Cant wait till you guys get you hand on new Roadster
What was the previous EV record?
Model 3 performance with 1:53.27
@@AustinFerguson thanks🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🔥🔥
why was the acceleration at 03:03 slow until the end of the lap? overheating will it be? or the pilot who didn't accelerate everything?
The Plaid should have excellent cooling, so don't think that's the problem. Although it hasn't got the 4680 batteries yet :P
Freaking instalike!!!!
Way to go to all! Amazing Craig.
2:44 losing almost 1 second in this right corner 😭
All hail Dark Helmet!
"I see your schwartz is as big as mine"
Can't wait for my UP Plaid parts to arrive!!

Definitely hitting thermal limit and the driver didn't look like he was trying to manage it. Most cars would have trouble in that heat.
Probably started to overheat it was 112 degrees outside, like 44.5 celsius. Too hot for any vehicle really.
Very, very cool. Fast as hell even though it is a handful. Cheers and good luck
Wow, just sitting here goig Bwoah....holy $#!+..... Nice job Craig and team!
Bravo and well done, I’ve run a 2:24 there in a stock 944 and thought that was fast lol 😂
Wonder if FSD will have a race track mode?
When are you going to post the sound made for the plaid?
That was fast! I think it could have been faster with the yoke wheel.
That thing is a rocket ship! Congrats! Great run!
Impressive, how many laps can you get out of it? Are we getting close to being able to do 20 lap races?
The plaid no longer has that overheating issue.
@@seanz6586 I was thinking range wise. Full out it seems to use 2-3 kWh per mile on the Apex track.
Sweet!
Plaid baby!
This is awesome. I feel like they could shave off half a second with some more runs
Frame of reference lap times please.
How did you defeat the traction/stability control?
How fast is the Unplugged Performance Model S Plaid from 0 to 60 ? A Drag Race against the Rimac would be interesting
I’d be surprised if it was over 1.98 sec
Can this model s run under 9 seconds?
most likely can’t, this is a down force configuration which increases drag but helps with cornering. Because of this it likely has a slower 0-60
Never the less would be a very interesting acceleration curve.
light weight

Can anyone provide with the best in that track
Now let’s see them try to do it with the yoke 😂
@david sosnak Skip ahead to 8:34 ua-cam.com/video/NMLY9dRUt-A/v-deo.html
What are the odds that a different driver could drive at least 6.68% faster to break the overall record? probably pretty slim right?

come to germany!!
Let’s get that Plaid to VIR and set some sub 2s. Call me. The United States Nurburgring is VIR. (:

No offense to Randy but it's nice to see someone actually push the car to its limit.
He's not even using the yoke haha
Or the original interior.
Quite sure safety requirement for track cars is detachable steering wheel. Really useful if drive in unconscious to have more space.
🤘😎👍
Amazing time and the driver made many mistakes so this could easily be improved upon.
