Thank god I’m in Australia as new watches aren’t affected here. I never used the blood oxygen sensor until I caught COVID 2 weeks ago and was short of breath so it came in very handy to monitor my blood oxygen. It’s an absolute must have feature for me now. I feel for you guys in the US.
I use the blood oxygen sensor every day. It absolutely compares correctly to the finger monitor.

I can’t believe my series 9 doesn’t have the blood oxygen sensor. That is one of the reasons I was super excited to order it to realize it didn’t come with it.
They should reduce the price. One less feature their product doesn't have.

Probably this feature will be enabled via firmware update after Apple buys Masimo 😂

Honestly this feature was mostly surplus. I promise the average user uses this less than 10x a year
It is kinda cool when you track your sleep.
Watch does it on its own and I’m always checking my sleep data, so technically I use it every day 🤷🏻♂️
I don’t use that feature. And like you said it’s not the most accurate which is why it wasn’t medical graded like the ECG so it’s not a dealbreaker for me.
I cycle pretty long distances and have asthma. I bought the watch to keep an eye out, it works fantastically, and it generally knows before I do that, I'm going to need to up my preventor or inhaler use.
Fantastic video Dave! Glad you made this to address Apple removing this feature from their device. I wonder if it'll be back via software or if they'll redesign it to avoid the infringing part in the next edition. Interesting times. 🤷♂
I would guess that a large percentage of the older Apple Watch users use this feature - along with fall detection. Moreover this was likely the most used feature during COVID when all ages of people who contracted the virus had respiratory issues and relied on these sensors to measure O2 sats. Point is the Apple Watch is not only used by runners and outdoor enthusiasts, but everyday folks who appreciate the ability to measure health metrics.
Whenever I go to the Dr office and they take my sp02, I take it on my watch and it has always matched. From my perspective, the Apple Watch is accurate. My blood 02 is always a couple percentage points lower than considered normal and I can feel when it is. Therefore, I like to track it to see if I can understand any patterns. The watch verifies what I’m experiencing and I can take a few minutes to resolve it. A bit of exercise helps bring it back up.
For me SpO2 is very important. As I had Covid and for me was breathing issue so I'm still follow it. I'd say garmin watch does very accurate. My lowest rate was 76 and now after for more than one year I have 96% - 100% SpO2.

I am asthmatic. it is important to me. I find it is reasonably accurate.
The SPO2 sensors probably factoring to your sleep scores and your overall fitness. They just aren’t in the foreground their things that tend to run in the background so it probably will have an effect.
The SpO2 sensor is only used for blood oxygen saturation sensing during sleep or on-demand throughout the day. It doesn't play a role in any of your fitness metrics like VO2 max since the regular optical HR sensor is still functional.
I use the O2 sensor to make sure that the pain I’m feeling is just “in my head” when doing stairs w/weights… limit training to increase limits……
Very useful for me. I ended up in hospital with Covid and the reading was 78%. That got the ambulance to my house! Oxygen and steroids sorted my pneumonia but tangible readings helps everyone.
Spo2 is a great way of early covid detection. Also it’s important for people with asthma or other lung problems.
For someone who has sleep apnea it’s important.
I use mine on my series 6 one in a while for kicks and when I’m not feeling well. Do you know if it’s still active on the first ultra? And if you buy the ultra 2 from amazon or Best Buy is it turned on?
Existing watches will have it turned on. Any new watches sold in the USA will have it disabled no matter what retailer you purchase from.

3:38 on a slight side note, I’ve just gone from a Fenix 6X Sapphire to an Epix Pro 51mm. I’ve notice that, while the 6X SPO2 was pretty accurate, the Epix is definitely more so. I’ve also got a professional finger sensor, and it matches up perfectly all the time (so far). I reckon it must be to do with the slightly more proud sensor unit on the Epix compared to the 6X.
Quick question, when you say “bought before the 18th” do you mean bought or bought and activated? The reason I ask is because I bought one the 17th and shipping has gotten delayed; it is supposed to arrive tomorrow.
I believe it just needs to be purchased prior to the 18th. You should be good.

The sensor on Apple Watch is the same one on the finger unit. That’s the entire issue. It works no different on the wrist and has been proven accurate.
Have got this on my fenix 6x. Used it a couple of times on 4 years. Like a lot of “features” in many devices, it’s just not that important.

I sleep with my Ultra and did with my AW series 6, so I’ve got 3+ years of data. As well as sleep, I’ve got data during all my workouts too. I certainly don’t need blood oxygen data, but I wanna keep that going in the future. Hope Apple gets it sorted out before the next one I buy.

If i have a spell where I am not sleeping well, I will activate the pulse ox sensor on my Forerunner 955 to operate during sleep to see what’s going on then. Only other time I have used it has been when visiting my family doctor who will sometimes check my blood oxygen saturation using a fingertip device. So I will turn it on then for an ad hoc reading just to compare (it is usually within 1% of the medical grade device).
I think this is BIGGER than the SPO2. It’s about Apple’s approach towards similar issues it has or might have in the future.
One of the reasons I’m an Apple Watch user (and generally, and Apple Ecosystem user) is the consistency and peace of mind that the company has a track record of being innovative and reliable.
In this case, Apple broke these two promises:
Innovative - Disabling a feature that many use for health tracking (myself included) is not a good sign. Taking a step back is not great at all, and they clearly did it to appease the board of directors and not lose revenue. I’m in agreement that they might circumvent this in the future with different hardware and / or software, but this is not a good look.
Reliability - Looking into the future, what happens if similar disputes arise? Would Apple quickly pull the trigger on disabling functionality? Well, here goes reliability outside the window.
So to me, the focus here is much broader than just SPO2, and I think we all need to pay very close attention to how Apple permanently resolves this.
Apple didn't really break any promises. If you already own a watch you still have this feature. If you buy a new one they're very clear on their website that this feature is disabled. Pretty transparent if you ask me!

I own an Apple Watch Series 5 waiting to get a Garmin Fenix 7 pro… hopefully… never used the o2 feature…. A good thing I guess if correlates with other physiological parameters…
Series’s 4 no worries
I’ve owned the Apple Watch Ultra 2 for several months, and have been (still do) using Garmin watches for years. In my experience, the Garmin sensor readouts are close to if not the same as what the doctor finds using formal medical sensors. While I haven’t made the same comparison with the AW 2, its results seem very similar to Garmin’s.
I find the oxygen saturation figures, and trends, to be interesting and useful in several respects. First, when my training is going well, the O2 saturation does top out (98-100%). Second, if you wear these watches continuously, they can spot changes over time, including noting that you may be getting sick, or that you may have a serious issue (that they cannot diagnose, of course) regarding your oxygenation while sleeping. In fact, formal sleep studies include detailed tracking of O2 levels, especially in conjunction with possible sleep apnea or related issues.
I think there are additional questions about the existing Apple Watches going forward. For instance, if an owner performs a full reset, either to clear a bug or for resale, will the O2 feature be reactivated, or will Apple disable it?
Existing devices will always have it even if they’re reset. Only newly sold watches are affected for now. Thanks for sharing!
When I cycle indoors, the meters of the bicycle indicate that I have burned 1,100 calories. When I look at my Apple watch ultra 2, I have only burned 400 calories. This is so inaccurate on the watch.. Walking steps are also inaccurate between the phone and the watch..
Ha. I disabled the sensor on the Garmin to save battery. I have about a million features to start using first.
Only in America, my old watch 7 and new Ultra 2 still have it in the Netherlands, both running 10.3

Whether you use the oxygen sensor or not, I don’t think Apple should be charging the same price for the Apple Watch Series 9 or Ultra 2 if that device option was removed. Unless the plan has always been to turn that feature back on soon.
It will likely be turned back on I'm sure. The good news is no one is being forced to buy them... and I'm sure plenty are still going for it even without this feature!

For me is a deal breaker, I have diabetes and the Oxygen on Blood indicator is really good for recovery and training effect (on my case at least). So would skip it just for this reason
Diabetes doesn’t affect your SpO2 so fairly pointless. It’s a useless feature, we all managed without it before.

I got Covid in the Philippines. The Sp02 sensor on the Watch 8 was invaluable. It was just as accurate as a $20.00 finger O2 sensor. I now have a watch 9 with the Sp02 feature and won't be updating the watch until Apples quits cheaping out on licensing the O2 tech.
Why is it an issue with Apple and not garmin and other sport watches?

It’s about the design. Masimo had a patent on a specific design. Apple hired Masimo engineers and essentially copied the design of the sensor and code that Masimo came up with (allegedly). Garmin and others developed theirs internally and it doesn’t infringe on Masimo’s patent. Lots of ways to skin a cat!

Yes, had my hand on one ready to checkout and remembered about the oxygen sensor not working. My Apple Watch 6 works. I agree, Apple, $800 is too much for a broken device. Would I buy an iPad that didn’t have a clock app?
It's likely a temporary situation. You could also shop 2nd hand or refurbished to save some money and get this feature now.

Nope, just blood oxygen level. The optical heart rate sensor combined with GPS data are used for VO2 max.

And that is why I sold my Ultra and purchased a Garmin Fenix 7X, it works better and is more accurate anyway. I used a finger pulse oximeter and my Garmin was spot on and the apple was not.
I do care about it and am so glad I already have the Ultra 2. Hopefully they work things out…why else would the app still be on the new watches? I don’t use a lot of the features but someday they may come in handy. Think of all the heart features, crash detection and fall detection. I’m so over the statement….. I never use it. That’s not what this is about.
I'm with you when it comes to "I want what's advertised" but in this case Apple is telling you it's not there. There's no secrets here! I guess what I want to know is if it really matters to the vast majority. It's certainly a nice-to-have feature but I feel like *most* people don't make use of it.
Garmin Fenix user for almost two years now. I only used the SpO2 sensor once, my first day with the watch, and never again.

It is only removed in new 9 and Ultra2 in the USA. It was NOT removed from watches sold.
And once this BS suit is settled, it will be re-enabled via firmware...99% sure of that.
If Apple were to remove it from current user's watches, they'd have to refund them if asked.
While I agree it's not totally accurate, it's good enough if you're in need of that info.
I track it. Esp in high elevation places. Not having it on my watch would matter.
Use mine to see what numbers are when i sleep.
To me that sensor is very important, especially with COVID still around.

It's a very complicated situation. I've read into it quite a bit and it's not super clear what happened. From what I understand Apple hired engineers from Masimo and offered them salaries they couldn't say no to. Then, those engineers essentially re-created what they designed at Masimo. The strange thing is it doesn't seem like apple was trying to hide anything since the apple patent even has a former masimo engineers name on it!

Never used in any watch, too much battery drain for little data. With my series 9 with it disabled i can go almost 2 days without charging, instead every day. Battery health will thanks me

It does really matter to me, I will not be upgrading to the ultra two and if they remove it from my wife series 9 I will return it got 60 days to do so with Best Buy anyways to get a full refund all I have to say is WTF Apple 🤨

SPO2 is as useless as ECG. If you are sick enough to need these features, you have real devices that monitor this stuff. I've had/have watches that measure both and never use them.
It’s useless for me, for instance. But other people do find use in using it.
I think people should go back to basics and not rely on tech to monitor you - unless you're going up everest, why on earth are you measuring SP02.. it just puts more unnecessary anxiety on you for monitoring and thinking you're dying

Even if the sensor functionality isn’t important to a given consumer, perception is a problem.
This is not a lame duck device because of the situation, but for those aware of what’s going on, it can lead to feeling like you are picking up a less than wearable.
This is all by proxy from friends and family.

I think elderly and/or sick people use a blood oxygen level as a signal when they need to go to ER. Unfortunately have had friends with Covid, lung cancer, COPD etc for whom knowing blood oxygen level was important. Of course, if the watch not accurate, then they would be better off with a stand alone blood oxygen meter. I’d like to know if future technology in the watch (like the 10) will maybe have a more accurate blood oxygen sensor.
I'd buy a 100$ smart watch like Huawei fit 2 to get pO2 and other stuff. This is a very humiliating blow to Apple, they just copied other companys tech, and now have to pay dearly

I have blood-oxygen on my Garmin. It was off by default. Turned it on once and it was horribly inaccurate and I turned it off again immediately. The reason I knew it was inaccurate is because I have an accurate one which I used frequently after an operation a couple of years ago. I cant imagine why 99% normal healthy part of the population should care at all about the sensor and unless the Apple sensor is a lot better than the Garmin one it's also inaccurate.
Marques Brownlee talked about the issue in one of his videos a couple of weeks ago and his team had looked into info about the case. If what they found was correct then Apple had been on touch with the company that now sues them (Masimo) but hadn't worked out a deal. Instead Apple hired (stole if you want to look at it that way) a number of that company's researchers and made their own sensor. Even applied for a patent in the name of one of the people they had brought over. I've no idea who'll win the legal battle, but to me it seems understandable that Masimo is pissed.
This is crazy. That feature is potentially life-saving. For someone with asthma, for example.
Why is it crazy? If you have the watch already, it still works. If you don't but need this function, buy another watch.

Never used it when I had an Apple watch, don't use it on my Instinct 2. I live at sea level, I have plenty of Oxygen. Also I disagree that they should lower the price or offer refunds. It's an Apple watch. You're buying an Apple watch, not a dedicated blood oxygen sensor. They can add and remove whatever they want via software releases each year, what makes this so different?
I see both sides. If you're advertising something as having a feature and then removing it... That's false advertising. In this case though, they're telling you up front it doesn't have it so there's no secrets. Of course they can add in firmware updates but they shouldn't remove anything. Thanks for chiming in!

It's not that simple, because I believe that many athletes want to improve their V2Omax and then suddenly have no more values.
The SpO2 sensor isn’t used for VO2 Max. The optical heart rate sensor is still functional which is the part that is used for it.
If your statement is correct, that is very interesting. This means that the estimate is only made by evaluating the heartbeat.@@ChaseTheSummit
@@vornamenachname9712 it uses heart rate data and GPS data from outdoor activities to calculate estimated vo2max. This is the same on Garmin, COROS, Suunto, Polar, etc… and no different on Apple.
@@vornamenachname9712you can’t even move when taking a SPO2 measurement, never mind getting values to estimate vO2 Max while working out and the watch bumping around everywhere
I'm so bored with Apple that I'm going to switch to Samsung.. Update 17.1/17.2/17.3 come on Apple what a joke.. Still not a good photo management with separate folders, when I delete the photo from recent then it needs to stay in the other folders lol, still the same old ugly control panel, still no costumisation options, Settings menu is soooo boring, can't change almost nothing, 75% of the apps are paid useless apps, still not a decent wallet app for adding more cards for europe come on Apple i'm not living in America nor China but in Europe, no driver's license application, no public transport applications?? 17.3 has messed up my battery man man man.. Paying so much money for an Apple device while Samsung is offering so much more features for less.. Shame on you Apple you sucks!!
