The real question though is how does it compare at 1.4 or 1.8? That is the question, not the comparison at 5.6. I think we all realize there is a difference at higher f-stops, but its it worth getting the 1.2 versus the 1.4 or 1.8?
In addition to what Devon said, there are apps that will render the background w/o messing the quality and final product. Keep look into it though, good luck!
Totally agree with Paul.
I own the EF 1.4 as well as the RF 1.2 and the 1.2 is better! I've used both extensively on my R5. Now, is it $2700 better? No. But is it the price difference better? I could argue yes. There are times when I can't get the same look (noise level, dof, etc.) from the 1.4 that I can at 1.2. And this 1.2 is so so good. if I shoot high speed bursts of the 1.4, a significant number of shots are slightly out of focus. But the 1.2 lens is always tack sharp. I could never justify the EF 1.2 over the EF 1.4 because the EF 1.2 was just so hard to work with (sharpness was a major issue with the EF 1.2). Great photographers delivered amazing results with the EF 1.2 but not me at my skill level. But I can consistently get fantastic results with the RF 1.2. There is one advantage of the EF 1.4 and that was the lens IS. However, I mostly shoot people so slow shutter doesn't help because people move. You really have to use the RF 1.2 to know why it's worth it. Do a rental.
@Devon Eltone hahaha small difference between 1.2 and 1.8????? Clearly you don't know what you are talking about.
Now if you say 85mm 1.2 vs 105mm 1.4 that's a different story
@Devon Eltone I'm sure the RF 1.2 made a number of improvements but the mount alone isn't it. I have the RF 100 2.8 and while it's great, it really wasn't an improvement on the EF 100 2.8. I don't have the EF version anymore so maybe my recollection on that is off but I didn't see the improvement I was expecting. It's not a step down but considering the price I expected more out of it.
Is worth it all day long. The RF 85 1.2 lens is my favorite lens and I have almost all the RF lens.
well what i'm interested in (or was) is difference between F1.8 (which is common top of the segment 85mm portrait lens) and F1.2 to assess if the difference is worth the extra K.
At the end the difference you get with F5.6 and F11 is pretty obvious to any photographer who knows about DOF.
It's confusing why this video didn't address his original premise. Is it worth the extra money for a this vs a 1.8? He even said it's a waste of money to use this to shoot at 5.6, etc. I always enjoy Sal's videos, but this missed the mark.
Yeah, I think this video missed the mark. About your question, I own it, owned the RF 85 1.8 and EF 85 1.4 IS.
The RF 1.2 is exceptionnaly sharp, even wide open. On a full body portrait, the shallow depth of field of the 1.2 is a big improvement over the 1.8 (plus the 1.8 has a rubbish AF). The difference between 1.4 and 1.2 isn't night and day however. But the 1.2 is a lot sharper.
Absolutely worth it. Got to use it on an engagement session in December. Makes everything else disappear and the clients popped in the photo.
Great content Sal!
What camera do you recommend?
the answer is YES, so long as you know what your doing with it. The difference between the 1.2 and others is sharpness, bokeh, and better light. There are plenty of videos that show the difference and some people are ok with cheaper lenses that aren't quite as sharp or the bokeh isn't quite as good. But when you want the absolute best...
I LOVE my 85RF 1.2. It stays on my camera most of the time and is my go-to for headshots and portraits. I've also had some really good performance in smaller live performance venues with terrible light. LOVE it! When I was looking for an 85mm, I rented the 1.2 and liked it a lot. It was great but pricey. So I shopped for alternatives. At some point, I decided I was never gonna be happy with anything else. Super freakin' sharp.
Brother Sal love this
I have the sigma 1.4 and although I love it I have been pondering the canon since I got the R5
Great work
Marry the lenses and date the bodies
Old master photographer told me that years ago 😊
Great advice
1.2 is worth the money! I love the style!
Awesome content!
But…
The distance between the foreground and background with the model also influences DOF and Bokeh.
And as other comments raised, what would be the differences between 1.2 vs 1.4 vs 1.8 (and even 2.8) with the model in the same position and distance from foreground and background?
Great demonstration of bokeh at various apertures (as well as at different distances to the subject), BUT -- if you are asking whether the 1.2 is worth the extra $ over the 1.4, it would be very helpful if you compare images at 1.4 with images at 1.2.
Eric
This is a great overview and explanation of why a low aperture (f1.2) lens is worth the money but it does not address the real question if the $1000 extra is worth it over a f1.4 or f1.8 (your comparisons are only done at f5.6 and f 11. I would contend that you can do the same thing at f1.4 or even 1.8 by slightly adjusting the distance from the subject (I am taking inches of adjustment to get approx. the same Bokeh) . A comparison at that level would allow you to build a stronger argument for the 1.2 lens. The other thing that you missed is that on any lens, from any manufacturer, as the f stop decreases, the quality of the glass gets better so the picture will be sharper and have less artifacts. Is it worth it? Only the individual photographer can take these facts and know for sure.!
I liked how there was a Joel Grimes ad right before your video!! But yea, I love the shallow DOF. In the film days I shot a Canon FD 50 f0.95. Yea, that’s shallow!!
Omg I would love that lens!!!!
Love the lens I recently purchased the RF100mm f2.8 Macro but this is in another league. I'll probably end up getting this lens eventually.
Most people wouldnt know the difference. I think the biggest thing people care is about how good you can edit their photos.
that's a valid point, customer don't understand apertures and this lens is very expensive.
Bought mine a few months ago. Definitely NO regrets. If my wife would let me sleep with it, I would 🤣
What u just taught ppl won’t tell you when u just starting out thank you!!🙏🏾 ❤
I would prefer a 1.4 for the smaller size.
If you are asking wether the 1.2 is worth it you should have used F2.0 the budget Lens wide open still L Series glass but a third the cost if that. I am studio or at least strobes 100% of the time even on location so no I didn’t buy the 1.2, but I did buy the 85mmF2.0 in the rare instances I need/want the f stop I feel it more than completes the task the boca is phenomenal I would have rather seen F2.0 to compare instead of 5.6 and F11 as many others have stated that comparison not necessary. I cou,d have made a wrong choice 1.2 may be vastly superior the 2.0……
F 1.2 for sure. Wish you shot at f2 as well for a comparison to the 85 f2 rf lens that’s out
I liked the commands “one-two” and “chin-down”. Would like to see more on this. I have the 85/1.2 as well, differences are only really visible when printing. For social media, you can blur out in post easier 😮
Thank you for making this, would be great to also discuss a little about your lighting, we can see your assistant holding the rather large reflector but some deets would be great! Also would be really interesting to see shots from 1.2 to 2.0 to see if there is a huge difference?
Worth it!!
I would buy the F1.2 if I was still in business. Lecia has a F.95 50mm lens if you want to be completely manual including focusing. I have some lens from 1974 when I started shooting weddings that still work today. Great video showing what f stop does.
For this demo, just show us 1.2, 1.4 & 1.8 that's the determination here. We all should know the results of 5.6 & 11...... but 1.4 to 1.2 is it really worth it?
After our Iceland trip I had to get it. I tried Brandon's and was in love. It's becoming the most used lens in my bag. I love the video. Cheers.
The is nothing new... same old surprise... wow - 1.2 is better than 5.6!
sorry to disappoint you with some NEW FOUND EPIPHANY ... that somehow 5.6 is better than 1.2 ... you know... darius... everyone might not know this... especially people new to photography... as hard as that might be to process... although we have made some notes to provide new and SHOCKING material... :)
That f1.2 is banging!
Hi Sal - I think you should compare 85 mm f 1,2 with f1,8 and then ask the question if it is worth the additional amount of money. Comparing with 5.6 and/or 11 does not make sense to me. As a Nikon shooter I'm keen to compare the announced f1.2 85mm Z S lens as soon it will be available with the f1.8 I already use ... I fear that it will have a similar price tag like Canons primes. But I agree with you that it will be less work for portrait skin retouching once you can blur it right in camera which is an argument for wide open apertures ... however anyone need to justify lens performance, g.a.s. needs, etc. either with his own budget or his personal CFO at home ;-)
And pls keep going with your short videos - very interesting and very good edu stuff. Krgds JED
In all honesty Sal, I’m keeping my trusty EF f/1.4 for a few reasons: the difference (to me) in aperture is negligible and also because of the added stabilization I get from my EF version; can’t have enough of that. Moreover, it’s lighter as well. 🤷🏻♂️
i agree with you the 1.4 is lighter, but its also not built the same quality - ie L-Series glass. but if you are using EF glass on an R series camera - there is no way those images are sharp at 1.4. :) i know... ive tested it. but i hear you brother. :)
@@SalCincotta1 I could’ve sworn the f/1.4 was still consider “L” quality…? It’s got the red ring on it, haha. Got it used for $900 and it hasn’t let me down ever. I guess I’ll stand down for now on the 85mm; I personally don’t see a reason to “upgrade” on that front just yet.
Now, the 50mm f/1.2 is something that’s on my radar since it’s a focal length I no longer have.
@@FranciscoAlvarezTV shit... you know what... you are 100% right. :) damn it... im now standing down. :) (but not on using the rf adapter - that thing is no bueno)
@@SalCincotta1 sucks for me then, lol. I shoot on R6s. No complaints from me so far, Sal. Things treated me well! Great bang for the (used) buck. It’s my ONLY EF lens in my kit though. Will definitely consider yours in the future but I’d just rather own the 50mm since it’s a focal length that I’d like to have at weddings.
@@FranciscoAlvarezTV i think you will be very happy with the rf50... no doubt... sharp as hell!!!
Yes it is worth the money and yes it is to be used at f1.2.
FYI: f1.4 to f1.2 is a 1/3 stop difference not 1/2 stop. Just saying. I enjoy your videos, keep up the great work.
Ty sir. You are correct. Talking while teaching in real time no charts to look at. Always get off whe. Talking about 1.2-1.4-1.8-2.0.
It's like betting...only spend what you can afford! So if your business profits allow you to buy this awesome lens, then yes it's worth every penny. I'm not a working professional, so I will stick to my trusty Canon 1.4 and by happy. 😉
Absolutely!
You know there is going to be a difference..
But..When you see em back to back..
Wowwwwww…Huge difference..
Thanks for the post …
Very subdued today..Must mean you are very serious about your glass..😊
Haha. Low key Sal. :)
Thank you
Sal goes full Italian at 0:54 .. lol.. Great stuff and others have already voiced on the looks, distance from background, etc. All of that matters.. obvs.. Parking lot shots.. the BEST way to sizzle those is to get the pavement/asphalt wet.. get a garden hose or a watering can, fill that sucker up, and wet the area where the model is, and shoot quickly. Looks exponentially better.. and that’s why you never really see a dry street in movies.
haha... i sure did. :)
You really stacked the deck because there is a world of difference between 5.6 and 1.2. What would have been useful is showing the difference between 1.4 and 1.2. While informative in absence of the bait and switch
lol... bait and switch... im hoping you are being tongue and cheek with that. the question is is it worth it... and showing the various range... i didnt say i was comparing every f stop nor did i even imply it. maybe ill review the other 85mm lenses side by side, but that would be the topic of the video.
YES!!! It is.
How would you compare to 28-70?
no comparison really. i will always defer to a prime lens. less moving pieces and the optics are so much better!! and you get more compression with the 85. but dont get me wrong - the 24-70 is amazing!! i defer to the 28-70... since its an F2. :) i like my fast glass.
Is it faster to focus than the old 85mm, but can you not get the same result from a F2.8 70-200mm lens
OMG YES!!! the EF was BRUTAL!!
I actually dont like the f1.2 shots I feel queasy looking at them, f2 would have been better. At 1.2 bokeh becomes 'toneh' (obnoxiously unnecessary obliteration of background). If canon did a 85mm f1.4 L id be much happier buying it
Hmmm, that doesn't look like St. Louis! ha ha. You down at your place in Florida?
Actually, with a f/1.2 you want to create less depth of field, not more. 😅
i dont believe i said that but if i did... it was clearly a misspoken word as im working and teaching in real time. :)
85mm 1.2 vs 1.4 would be much more useful..Ty
Bokeh! ALL DAY LONG! 👌
amen!
you didn't prove anything useful...
I've an old Nikon 50mm f:1.2 AI-s lense. It's my best one among six lenses which includes 14-24mm f:2.8 AF-S G lense.
You didn’t compare with 1.4 and 1.8 aperture. I think the difference is minimal between 1.2 and 1.4.
The only ones I bought only lens I need
