I was introduced to this song while I was living in Maine in 2008. I attended the Bangor Folk Festival and got to see Wayne Henderson do a rendition of this with a young banjo player that I unfortunately don't remember the name of. Ever since I've carried this song in my pocket. I got my first banjo almost a month ago to the day. I made it through your first 10 lessons and have since added three more tunes plus the start of this one. You are an inspiration and a fantastic mentor and even though we may never meet in person, you have been a guiding light in my life. Thanks Jim and keep up the good work.
I feel the same way, just didn't knew the words but you described it perfectly. I'm 23 years old and from the Netherlands, my dad used to play the 5-string but past away in 2016 ( time flies). I started picking about 3/4 months ago and already playing some songs with my mother backing me up with the bass. I find your videos the best to start playing the 5-string beceause of how honest you are in your teaching so I really want to thank you for that Jim! Greetings from a young Dutchmen
I just started learning to play the banjo late December with your help. I appreciate the lessons so much. I just learned Grandfather's Clock. Of course, I've got a few areas that need work and lots of practice to sound as good as you, but am working on it. I've posted on UA-cam for myself basically so I can watch my progress. So there if you'd like to watch. Thanks again Jim!
Hi Jim, I bought a banjo almost as an impulse buy about a month ago, and I can't tell you how many hours I've put into playing it. Since finding your Beginners Bluegrass series I have just hardly put my banjo down. Thank you for the time and effort you put into your videos. I have learned Cripple Creek, Foggy Mountain Breakdown, The Ballad of Jed Clampett and this within the space of a month and 99% of that is thanks to you! With thanks from the UK.
The end of this video was such a coincidence for me- my brother has been dying to play with me and he said his favorite song is grandfathers clock so I’m trying to learn it before we get together this weekend (gulp!). It was so weird that you said “if you’re at this point you’re ready to get out there and play with others”:) thanks for being such a great teacher!
I've tried allot of instruments . Never took I watched you're videos a year ago . You made it fun I enjoy banjo now. I know 6 songs now learning this song. Originally I started to motivate my father to pick up his grandfather's banjo . Now everyone sits around the campfire and listens to me pick.
Another Amazing instructional Jim! I recently met and bought a project banjo from Geoff Hohwald. After some good natured ribbing about stealing some of his would-be student he complimented your style & what you’re doing for the banjo world. I brought to his attention that he’s moving banjos because of the interest you’re sparking in people like me.
Hi Jim. I was having a hard time getting the pull off after the 2121 but it gets easier the more I do it. Then I thought my ears were going buggy when I heard the difference between the way you played it at the beginning of the video and the way you showed us how to play it. Ah -ha ! I caught you. AT the beginning you played a cripple creek slide before the new alternating roll instead of the 43- 4th fret, or I'm just going nuts. Love your lessons and can't believe how far I've come with your help. Thank you.
Thanks for another great lesson Jim! I've been trying to not use the tabs on the past couple of videos and I've found it to be an even deeper way to learn. I've been playing for a handful of years and have had periods of stagnation and periods of leaps and you're videos have keep me moving forward. I find your lessons to be the best ones I've come across. I've been contributing via patreon and I hope many more join me, you are providing such value to the world!
Jim Pankey definitely I am, one question that I’m pretty sure I know the answer to. The tab shows a 2-3 slide where you play the 2-4 cripple creek slide, I’ve played both and 2-4 sounds better.......knowing you I’m guessing you’ll say to play whatever feels right eh 😁👍🏼 thanks again
Wow Jim! Been thinking about learning this one for a while, thanks for putting all the good songs up. Every time I find a good song I want to learn, you already got a lesson for it! God Bless!
Hello Jim. My banjo lay gathering dust for nearly 15 years until I came across your beginner videos. Your enthusiasm inspired me and I’m now busy with Grandfathers clock. I’m 64 years old, never too late to learn. I really appreciate your lessons. Thank you
I am amazed how fast you can learn this! You were right, learning by ear is faster over time than tabs .. but I'm not quite ready to show it yet, but I'm on the right track, thanks to you!
Sandy Goddard I'm also practicing .. practicing never stops .. it's more difficult by ear, but it makes you a better player .. and with someone like Jim it's also incredibly fun .. so keep on picking :-)
Thanks Jim.....I love this tune. Been learning from a combination of your videos and books since April this year and still lovin' it. I'm gonna try and learn this one next. I have reached a bit of a plateau though which I can't seem to get past, especially trying to get chord shapes quickly enough to keep tunes flowing (I have small fingers/hands) and especially on the D chord which is a real stretch for me Any tips apart from keep practising ? Thanks again....banjo has changed my life.
I have an important request! It's something I really want to learn but I find that you can make learning anything much much simpler! You should do a tutorial on the banjo part of "in hell I'll be in good company"
See now I know I'm learnin' something since I could recognize the rolls & licks & such from your first playthrough just listedning. Thanks a bunch, Jim.
Hey John! Love the videos! They've helped me out so much! I was wondering if you could please make a video on how to play John Hartfords song Lorena.. I've been trying to learn it for some time but am still unable to do so. Your help would be much appreciated!! Keep making videos! Theyre awesome!
I never heard of this song before this video, but it has become one of my favorites. One thing that I'm trying to work on is how to take the melody of a song and then add slides, pull-offs, and hammers to that melody. Do you have any tips, I'm sure it has become something you can do naturally without even thinking about it but, it would really help during jams and being able to improvise. Thanks for all that you do, love from the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in NC.
There’s no secret of how to use different techniques to get to the melody. Just listen and apply what you’ve discovered. After a while it just starts to work.
Jim please do a lesson on Led zeppelins going to California. It's so hard to figure out the best rolls and make it sound good on your own as a beginner.I'm a pretty quick learner, but there aren't any good tabs or lessons online....please lol. Have a blessed day.
Hey Jim, Happy Holidays. I have finished the first Beginner Series. Not sure what is the logical series to work on. I see you mentioned Foggy MT and Ballad of Jed, But not clear to me which direction to go. As I have mentioned I am older so a bit slower. But am getting it. Looking for you suggestion on next Beginner series would be appropriate' Cliff
@@JimPankey Yikes, there are a few things on Ballad Of JC that are way new. A7 cord, I can get but that big stretch with pinky. WTH. Hit flat every time. Any suggestions. Also, I feel that I jumped some instructions as the rolls are not clear as they were when you were all in my face, which I liked. Getting frustrated on the big reach. HELP
Cliff Hedges keep working on the reach, but in the meantime you can just play that string open. As the songs get a little more advanced I don’t spoon-feed like I do in the beginner series. I’m sure you can figure it out though. :)
I've got all the part but am habeing trouble putting them togather. I'm watching the begining where you played it completely but there are a few parts where I'm having trouble. P. S. Hope the heat vent is fixed.
this will be the next song i learn. PS - I know what you mean about the cold. My wife moved me from the house out to the garage and there is no heat. Bundled up in 4 layers I play til I can't feel my hands. Bit by the banjo bug and can't stop, Ha Ha
The pull off isn’t a separate piece... it happens during the roll. You can even skip the pull off and it works. Another way to think about it, it’s still just 3231... the pull off happens on the first 3

That is wonderful. Tell me is that melody also used for the old tune "uncle Joe" I think it is. Wonderful song. I learn so much from you. Thank you!
I’ve only ever known this melody as Grandfathers Clock. Not familiar with “uncle joe”.
Thanks for watching!
Now I realize it's Called "Uncle Jim" I will send you a link if I find one. I have it on a bluegrass cd. Thanks!

One of my favorite tunes.. love this!! Cant wait to learn this! Perfect playing! Cheers

Don’t guess I’ve ever played that one.
You are a good teacher! Tnkx Jim!
I appreciate that!
this one is coming to me quickly, thanks
Awesome!
Jim is there anyway you can do a video on the long black veil?
How do you play that slide at 0:28
I meant 0:26
Slide from 2-3 with a forward roll. 3215
Is that part of the first section? But like repeated? Thx for responding so fast btw

After you’ve done Ballad of Jed and FMB, then maybe look at Home Sweet Home.
Once you have those assimilated pretty much anything else is fair game.

Nope

A lick is any series of notes that can be used in different songs

Im struggleing with that pulloff section right before the c-chord. Is it 3(pulloff) then 3231!? I keep trying it but every time it doesnt sound right
The pull off isn’t a separate piece... it happens during the roll. You can even skip the pull off and it works. Another way to think about it, it’s still just 3231... the pull off happens on the first 3
Jim Pankey wow that was a quick reply. Thanks ill give it a go. 😀

Can you do a banjo tutorial on Rednęck Yacht Club by Craig Morgan????
I’ve never heard of that artist or that song. Is that an old standard bluegrass tune? I pretty much only know bluegrass stuff.
It’s a country song from the early 2000s
