There’s many references to other films in this movie and I loved it. Carrie (1976) Akira (1988) The fly (1986) The elephant man (1980) Black swan (2010) Showgirls (1995) Videodrome (1983)
What i loved about this movie that it didn't take sides , i watched it expecting the usual feminist BS about this poor woman who lost herself to satisfy the male gaze , just to my surprise finding out that it's not like that , it's actually this gutter that is Hollywood the real villain of this movie , it's the glamorous life style that drove this woman to this level of self hatred, there was a scene in the movie in the new year's eve party , when you can see the dancers topless on stage and in the crowd you notice a mother bringing her like 7/8 year old daughter in full makeup wearing a dress that a girl in her age should never even think about wearing, this movie is made by a visionary which is very rare to see these days , hands down the best horror movie in 2024 and one of the best psychological horror movies ever made.
I saw someone say that the film is very much The Picture of Dorian Gray, if reimagined by this generation's Cronenberg. And I thought that was spot on.
Yes!!! This is a really great comparison! I was thinking this too. I also think Coralie Fargeat definitely has her own voice as well. It's very nuanced.
I saw it. There are more than a few things going on. It's not just about how old men make the rules about beauty. There are deeper issues involving both the women in the film.
Don't worry about numbers. Just know..if You love body horror films... (As I do... it's my fav sub genre of horror) Then this film was made for You. It's so cool. Coraline Fargeat ...freaking goes for it!
It’s easy formula To gain muscle but hard to do. Eat well and a lot. Lift heavy and hard regularly. Sleep. Really if you follow that consistently you WILL grow. I believe in you, Ryan.
Neon Demon is one of my favorite movies! Reanimator was insane(ly funny). The FLY? I named my cat Brundle after that creature, ha ha ha! (RIP Brundle Kitty, he WAS born in the 80s.) ETA: Yup, Tusk is a fave too. I find that I could only sit thru that once, tho. I'll play bits, like the spider bite is kinda funny as well as the traveling mole...
Something I very much appreciated is that the moments of hypersexualizatuon towards the outfacing world were always involving the partially nude; topless burlsque dancers, skimpy workout suits, etc. This allowed those inward facing moments of introspection and vulnerability shine through the full nudity being nonsexualized.
Saw this yesterday, and loved it. Reminds me of Requiem for a Dream. Not for everyone, but a cinematic tour de force for those who love cinema as an art form. Crazy!!!
I’m confident there won’t be any other films of this year that will beat The Substance. And there I was thinking Megalopolis would be the one (which I haven’t seen yet but loved the trailer). Long Legs was ok. Strange Darling was pretty good too… but the substance was a great movie. Still… not knocking The VVitch off my greatest horror of all time top spot though. That one was a 10/10 for me.
Dude….as a straight guy. …you’re a handsome man. I understand that nothing I say will change how you see yourself, but we don’t see how you see/feel about yourself.
That´s the thought that came to mind before watching and I called it once I saw it first hand. The appearance of the Grand Witch from the Witches 1990 as a reference.
First of all... it's a polished version (not a better version! Pun intendet) of "The Fly". And... I like naked woman. The 29 years old, the 61 years old... But so much nudity from a female director? Now you got it!
Really enjoyed your humorous enthusiastic review. You were spot on. Seen it twice so far. It's one of those movies you experience, not just watch. In summary the power of this mov ie is - the contrast between self love/hate, beauty/ugliness; finally the same "you" resents the "other you". ( The younger hating the older & the older hating the younger). Everything in this movie had a message - Intensely Brilliant.
probably the best movie of 2024 so far imo
agree
That's why it beat Deadpools box office right🤷
Agreed 100%
@@lindamasha3552
Box office and quality are two completely different things.
@@lindamasha3552 Taylor swift sells crazy albums doesn’t mean she’s the best artist alive

Carrie (1976)
Akira (1988)
The fly (1986)
The elephant man (1980)
Black swan (2010)
Showgirls (1995)
Videodrome (1983)
You forgot The Thing which the last creature really could fit into.
And Splinter 2006 if that counts.
Ik he talked bout the shining but the bathroom from the beginning of the movie is def a reference to the shining
I’d also add The Shining to that list based on the set design and cinematography.
You forgot basket case and society
Bro, I literally saw this movie yesterday and was thinking Ryan would love this LMFAO
😆
I will watch it on sunday, thanks for the suggestion
2 body plot reminds me a little of manhwa "Lookism"
Oh wow, that ending is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard hahahaha.
Yea I’ve never heard of it, but I don’t watch movies anymore so I’m not paying attention at all.

Demi Moore deserves the academy award for her portrayal of Elizabeth Sparkle imo.
Thought it was fucking awesome. Me and my buddy saw it high, which probably wasn't a good idea.
I'd green out
LOL! You made me laugh, bro!
This is a great decade to horror movies.
The Substance its been the best movie from this year so far
Best horror movie. The best movie of this year is still Dune imo.

That’s not feminism, Hollywood-style feminism is a psy-op.
It's about feminine narcissism. Hollywood is an enabler. Elizabeth does this to herself....
LOVE this film. Watched it twice, and no regrets. My favorite horror film of the year, and possibly since Hereditary 😍💯👏🏼
This is so accurate 💯!! These two are my most favs ever😍 As a horror stan from childhood, this is the one that I consider with Hereditary as fav
Sick movie. Definitely unforgettable. Only movie to make me almost sick😂
Same, I shouldn’t have bought nachos at the cinema 😂

I was excited for Coralie Fargeat. Her first movie, Revenge, rules
I loved that Movie!
Sounds like the premise of The Nutty Professor LMFAO

The Substance a movie that is inappropriate for young children and cowards!
on a scale of 1-10 how nauseatingly grotesque is it compared to other body horror movies?

nah, its boring comparison it to neon demon
I loved this movie! It’s one of my favorite films that’s come out this year.

Monstero ElisaSue reminded me of Festergut and Rotface from ICC in Warcraft
I loved that during the blood shower, Dennis Quaid’s character looked more irritated than horrified, like, “Why is this happening to ME?”
Love how in the Subtance promotional video they slam the two yellow play-doh balls together which is what Elisasue is at the end.

This movie is so fucking terrifying, goofy, sad, disgusting, stylish and fun. My jaw dropped multiple times which a film hasnt done in years.
10/10.

Excellent! Someone other than a Brit with a competent command of the English language.
Glad you’re covering it I wanted to hear your take on it !
Didnt know about this movie until last week. And now i have that being surprised and recency bias that made it to be my no. 1 horror movie of 2024
Don't worry about aging. I'm 70 and I'm managing just fine.
I'm so looking forward to this film. Thanks for bringing attention to it man. Now let me exit before the spoilers. xD
Had such a blast with this movie and walked out of the theater and had to finally exhale after having held my breath for basically 2+ hours lol
The creature at the end reminded me of the various creatures from the Basket Case movies
Dude i wwent to see it with my friend and I was squealing in my seat! It was awesome and bonkers but also deeply sad.
it was pretty fun, def had the fly and cronenberg-y feel.
Don't feel bad, cause I was laughing at the end too.
Thanks,, must see it
She is like a cross between final form mama at the end of dead alive and the grand witch from the witches 1990
That´s the thought that came to mind before watching and I called it once I saw it first hand. The appearance of the Grand Witch from the Witches 1990 as a reference.
One of my biggest fear: Aging
I really want to see this.
Such a good film.
