Conventional wisdom suggested there was no way on earth the reigning premier Collingwood would be 0-3 to start the season. But St.Kilda ensured it would be at least another week before Collingwood would win their first game of 2024, holding on despite a late flurry of goals to win by 15 points at the MCG. In a somewhat controversial finish, Jack Higgins booted a stunning 40m goal from what appeared to be beyond the boundary line, with the goalsneak's fourth major steadying the Saints after the Pies had kicked a quick three and put everyone on edge.

The crowd of 69,517 was a new record for a H&A home game at the venue, slightly larger than the home game in 2023 of 69,255.

This is the first-ever Aussie Rule football game I've ever seen and this was fun and really interesting to watch. 🏉🇦🇺🟥🟨 I can watch this over the American football that's here in the states. Because these footballers are real warriors. Who needs shoulder pads and helmets? 🏈🔥
