Pete Walker! Yes! *Please* make sure that you read his book, Emma. His work on CPTSD has not received the recognition it deserves. He was one of the first professionals, if not *the* first, to discuss the subject in-depth. I'm so pleased to see it on your list!
Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl is one of the most life changing books I've ever read. I read it at the beginning of the pandemic and it's written with such heartfelt empathy and understanding of the human mind as well as human suffering that it blew me away. To know that someone can choose to retain their kindness and not get incredibly cynical after they were inflicted with such unbelievable horrors is incredibly inspiring.
Gabor Mate has also a new book about trauma- The myth of normal. I have just started my healing journey and I look forward to educate myself with the books you recommend. I find your videos so helpful, you brought so much clarity in such a short time for me. I know that healing it is a process and takes time and I need to be patience with myself. Because of your videos I realise how important are for a human being to poses the knowledge and skills to be able to process emotions. As a society, in general we are not having these basics skills, so important skills. We don't have emotional education. Thank you for your work 🙏
Thank you very much for your videos, over the past few years I have been dealing with addiction and mental health problems, I have just come to the end of counselling for PTSD that I have never talked about for over 30 years, this has been very beneficial and I am beginning to love and nurture myself from a totally different perspective, love to you all and thank you x
Agreed, great book written by an accomplished and genuinely compassionate person. He's not just an author, but dedicated his career to helping those who most need it.
I have been through the suicide of my mother on 2019 and three previous gruesome attepts my father. I really don't think a book is gonna help at this point but thank you. Till someone has been through it they no nothing about it.
It seems weird to give your thing a thumbs up but we’re giving you a thumbs up to tell you that we relate or have a similar situation ie. (we smell what you’re standing in. ) 🙏🏽Know that you’re not alone and you’re still here that’s a great thing. Keep on keeping on it can and will get better it takes effort. You got this.
I heard about that book from my functional. I’ve been wondering if I really needed it. May I ask, do you think it’s really worth buying? We have a small budget so I have to be careful with spending.
@@alaskanmom2659 I really want to help, but I'm not sure yet. So far I've learned a lot from it, which has put things I'm struggling with, in a different light. I'm also quite tight financially, it's a library book, but if it's this good all the way through, I'll probably buy it. I've already gone back into it several times. If you get a chance, look inside before you buy it, on Amazon or in the store.
There is one reading that has allowed me to heal and find myself again despite depression, anxiety and panic attacks. The book is called " Everything Will be Fine I promise". It's a read I recommend to anyone who wants to heal and find the courage to change their life. I wish everyone you can heal from the past 🌱🥀🌺
ive been reading psychology books for 30 years then i read 'a new primal scream' by Dr arthur janov and havent read one since , that book explains everything and it made me realise the best thing to do is enjoy life, not spend life trying to work out why you're not enjoying life. john bowlby is another great author/psychologist 'attachment theory across the lifecourse'
Thanks for your brief explanations about your favorite books on healing from trauma. I am surprised that Judith Herman's Trauma and Recovery is not among them. I like Herman's book for the clarity it provides, the language it gives to survivors of repeated trauma, and the explanation of the (non-linear) steps involved in recovery. I also love the way Judith Herman shows respect and compassion for the resilience that she has witnessed in working with survivors of extreme trauma. She credits them for much of what she has learned on the subject. That particular rich endorsement that she gives to the fortitude that she has personally witnessed in survivors of sexual abuse, in her own patients, helps a survivor to begin to see something positive about themselves. Herman's book was a game-changer, and advanced the understanding of complex PTSD immeasurably, causing a paradigm shift on the subject. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on the book.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and advice. It's evident that you're a deeply caring person, and I love that you refer to this series as your "passion project." I'm now using the phrase 🙂 I believe a passion project is also a means of healing trauma, no matter how small or large it may be. I also love your down-to-earth, real way of relating to your viewers. Can't wait to dig into Dr. Van Der Kolk's book! 💕
Thank you so much for the recommendations. I've been feeling that I'm slipping in and out of my depression lately and getting "moody," and I just want to find something that seems to understand me.
Greetings! Thank you so much for sharing these books with us. I tried to read Bessel van DER Kolk's book, but it was way too triggering for me to handle. I will look into some of the others though, since I love to read and I have lots of trauma. Love and gratitude ♥️🙏
I had the same experience, though this was when I was only just starting to accept that I am traumatised. In contrast, I've found Peter Levine's book In an Unspoken Voice very hopeful and affirming. I can't speak to his other books. I hope you find healing and more peace.
Same. Triggered me in ways I was not prepared for. I really dislike that people recommend it to people with trauma. At least write down which chapeters or pages which can be triggering.
Thanks so much for sharing this list! I have read a few of the classics on this last, but am glad to learn about some new-to-me books. I appreciate you talking about whether or not specific books might be triggering, too.
Thank you for this insightful and pragmatic list. I read What happened to you by Oprah Winfrey/Dr Bruce Perry and highly recommend it. I found it empathetic and made trauma-informed healing approachable. I also recommend anything by Dr Gabor Maté, especially When the Body says no. Thank you Emma for making trauma-informed therapy so accessible with your YT videos
The Body Keeps the Score is excellent but very triggering. I had to skip some parts. Healing Trauma by Peter Levine was really good and I didn’t get the CD but there is link instead within the pages to access all the somatic exercises he teaches. That book was very helpful in understanding disassociation as was Bessel’s which is something I have struggled with. More DPDR than DID. But it was helpful.
I'm currently reading Pete Walker's book and everything I've read so far I'm thinking... Wow, how does he know this about me?? I've read a number of books and parts of it will resonate with me but everything I'm reading in this book I'm saying.... Yes, yes....
I recommend Forbidden Grief, the Unspoken Pain of Abortion by Theresa Burke. It can be triggering but it is a very comprehensive explanation of the aftermath of abortion.
Cannot confirm about her choices, except to say the literary choices like Angelou & Frankl most definitely do not. I’ve been reading It Wasn’t Your Fault and that book explains the whys while also including exercises to help a survivor approach the hows.
Peter Levine's book In an Unspoken Voice does have some exercises, and van der Kolk's book refers to things that can help (eg yoga) rather than specific exercises.
Pete Walker has an excellent list for emergencies: 13Steps to manage flashbacks with downloadable version for the phone on his site. I found other things very helpful, too.
Please please please do a video about how to deal with ongoing trauma. If you are stuck in a safe but triggering situation often. Sounds trigger me and I want to escape.
Do you have recommendations for healing and trauma as well as attachment and bonding for therapists? Any other recommendations for therapists? Im a clinical mental health counseling student.
Emma, I think there’s a misconception about CPTSD, therefore I don’t quite agree on the definition you said in the video. Have a quick look at chapter 5 of Pete Walker’s incredible book.
1. Healing trauma by Peter Levine 2. The body keeps the score 3. The transformation by Dr James Gordon 4. Moving beyond trauma by Eileen Smith 5. Getting past your past by Francine Shapiro 6. I know why the caged bird sings by Maya Angelou 7. Mans search for meaning Viktor Frankl 8. My story by Elizabeth Smart 9. CPTSD by Pete walker Omitting Oprah’s due to not wanting to support her

I would love to know how you like my self help book on trauma called “Heal the Body. Heal the Mind.” I can send you a free copy. I agree Peter Levine’s and Bessel Van Der Kolk’s books are great but my clients sometimes have a hard time understanding it.
I would love to hear your thoughts on Lindsay Gibson's book series on Emotionally Immature Parents, and Alice Miller's book The Drama of the Gifted Child.
I wish people would stop recommending The Body Keeps The Score and Pete Walker's books. They're highly triggering for many with CPTSD. Besides that I'm glad to see the likes of Peter Levine in there :) Thanks for the recommendations.
Dealing with trauma is important. You are a great advocate for intelligent answers for trauma solutions. Thanks. However, you fail to mention the greatest book and life-changing approach of all: the Bible. Whatever you have mentioned above is peripheral, while what the Bible contains fulfills our deepest needs and outlines our core values and principles. not to mention redemption and life saving grace.
Yeah I read the Bible everyday but she stills says alot of good and true stuff, true science of any kind will will always line up with the Bible because God is the author of both

It Wasn’t Your Fault is an incredibly helpful book as well for childhood trauma. It isn’t an “easy read” in the sense there is work involved but working through healing requires it in order to move past it & heal. 🤍
