Totally agree - Nick Morris' videos are so helpful! We went through the DIY Kitchen process, created our design, made a list of all the materials & units and were ready to check out... But then a designer at our local Howdens actually managed to price-match it! Can't believe it! The Howdens price would have been far more had we not 1st done all the work on the DIY Kitchens planner tool.
For sure - what I didn't realise either is that someone checks your design for any possible issues when you order too. So feeling slightly more confident now 😂
You could consider an induction hob as they can be inset into a quartz worktop and are therefore flush. So the hob, when not in use, effectively becomes more worktop.
I've put in a secondhand shaker kitchen and painted it mid apple green, which I love. I have the cooker and sink on the same side. I think my kitchen is longer, but narrower, so the other side most of the units are not quite as deep, but put in a breakfast bar that also holds the bins. Then it's fridge/freezer and then huge larder, where I also keep George Foreman, toaster, slow cooker etc. Not sure about having the microwave in the larder. I've put a narrow self under the units to hold various jars of stuff and excess bottle of wine. Also have a wine rack in a spare spot. I like the quartz with the goldy bits in it. Be careful with textured tiles i regards to cleaning - I had some previously and they were hell to scrub; love my metro tiles where everything just slides off. I also have a herb drawer, but I can't get all my herbs in it - I use loads and have large jars of them. I'll cope, but I do think they could have had 3 shelves in it instead of the 2. I think the bottom one was meant for oils etc. Looking forward to seeing yours come together.
Sounds like a really nice set up - I would have loved a breakfast bar (maybe next time!) And great tip on the textured tiles - I can imagine they're a nightmare!
These samples all look beautiful I’d go cashmere and then the quartz with gold bits in it. It’ll warm up the space and I imagine it’s gorgeous when it catches the sunlight 😍
Hey one thing I would say is to make sure you triple check absolutely everything once it’s delivered, as you only have a couple of days to let them know if somethings wrong. We had a few bits missing and some damaged parts but they resolved it 😊 absolutely love our kitchen from diy kitchens! Pan draws are really useful.
Dakar and the least busy worktop, loved that colour as soon as I saw it. We considered DIY kitchens when we were doing ours, we heard great things about it but eventually went with Howdens because we were able to negotiate the price down to a point we couldn’t refuse. Love your ideas and I think it would be beautiful whatever colour you choose.
I have shaker style kitchen from Ikea- light grey lehryttan, with a few black accents. You are right, shaker style is timeless and I also live in a victorian terrace. Good luck with your kitchen, I am sure it will be beautiful
Calcutta gold for sure! I have used it in clients houses and it’s beautiful. For cabinets the centre colour leaned against your wardrobe. Just my opinion as an Interior Designer from Canada. I love your house!
The kitchen is the most exciting part of a renovation! We went for Calacutta Gold in our kitchen and would still recommend it. Love the combination of it with the Cashmere here. What kind of lighting will you have in the kitchen? That’s something we didn’t quite master when renovating our house so will be adding light strips under the floating shelves, but definitely would have been easier to just add more down-lights/spots when we did our ceiling. I was also a bit concerned about not having enough counter space for appliances, but taking them out of the cupboard when needed has worked out pretty well for us so far. Just ensure you have enough plug points for ease of use. Look forward to seeing the finished product!
Ahhhhh I am so excited to see it come to life! Good to hear you love the Calacutta Gold - it's got such nice detail which I think would look absolutely amazing. We will be having a few spotlights in the ceiling and then strips underneath all units/shelves - hoping this should be fine. And glad the appliances are working out for you too! I'm thinking it's just something we will need to get used to (and considering we've been living out of plastic boxes for a couple of months I think we should be no problem!)
I went for a DIY kitchen in cashmere. I really like it! I have a pretty small kitchen as well (1.86cm wide), but I did go for upper cabinets down one wall. The extractor fan was in one of these upper cabinets, so I feel that this sense of uniformity stops it from feeling so closed in. I also have one large window, which keeps it airy. Good luck!
Hey Autumn, great video as always. So my wife and I are pretty much in the same situation as you guys albeit a few months behind. We're also planning to go with DIY kitchens. Some initials thoughts on your kitchen design - personally I would move your hob to the left a bit, maybe go for a 400 unit as your first unit - this way it'll give you a much bigger prep surface to the right of the hob rather than the prep surface being split into two. I would personally ditch the wine rack - and instead I'd suggest trying to get a wider pull out unit installed as it can be super handy for storing pots and pans. Just my thoughts..
Thanks for the thoughts - really great shout on trying to get a bigger area for kitchen prep as I ALWAYS use so much space. I think we were going to choose a wine rack as we couldn’t get another storage unit to fit but I will have another look. Thanks again and hope your renovation is going well ☺️
Looks good! If you have room for a cabinet/cart on wheels in an adjoining room, it could be pulled into the kitchen if you happen to need extra counter surface for a bit while cooking.
I’d go with Dakar and the second quartz. Have you got a space for bin and recycling in the cupboards? I hate a separate bin as it seems to always be in the way. Drawers are such a good option for storage! They are the most practical like you said. Love the design! :)
The bins are going in the cupboard riiiight next to the kitchen (I will talk through it all in the next kitchen videos) - it's a tiny inconvenience having to open a cupboard but I think will be far better than losing storage in the kitchen units (or a freestanding bin, as you mentioned!)
Such a good video can’t wait for the kitchen to be finished !! Really helped me think about storage for a kitchen looking for a house and the kitchens are always so small in the uk 🙃 thanks xxx
We live in a Victorian townhouse with a small kitchen, we have light grey walls, off white shaker units with black hardware and light oak worktops, can’t wait to see yours
Probably something you’ve thought of, but for your hybrid pantry, the door needs to open fully for the drawer to pull out. Once you have handles on will the wall on the other side allow that door to open? Love your videos!
Thank you! We have moved our boiler and washing machine into a cupboard we built in our first floor bathroom. The bathroom was pretty big so thought it was best to maximise space in the kitchen ☺️
Hi Autumn, really nice video! We got a shaker kitchen from Howdens!! I love the color and they priced match the price from all the other places we got a quote (IKEA, Wren, B&Q). Would highly recommend the cashmere color, depending on the light in your kitchen, it sometimes look grey, sometimes beige with a hint of purple
Absolutely love the design and cant wait to see the final colour choices 😍😍 i thibk having some open shelves on the wall where the sink will be will be gorgeous 😍😍😍
Looks great! One thing popped out to me. Will it be a nuisance having dishwasher in front of the door during outdoor get together clean ups? Maybe switch it to the other side if the sink?
I also have a narrow kitchen so I have no cabinets on one side if I pull down the dishwasher door I only have a foot. but I do have upper cabinets along the other side and a moveable shelf unit on the other.. I also like having a long work top space instead of breaking it up.. I am going to try this DIY kitchens as I need new doors.
Definitely like the Cashmere for the cupboards. If you like the slab look for the backsplash, it might be worth looking into large format porcelain tiles. I think they can come in sizes that would almost fit your backsplash with just the one tile maybe two. Also your run about rice is legit what goes through my head at times 😂
We have all drawers in our new kitchen with 3 uppers. The plates and dishes ,toaster and mugs, tea and coffee are in a drawer. Easy to put away dishes . Upper hold glassware and good dishes . My cabs are pale blue with a navy island we live in a mid century house, small bungalow with bedrooms 12x12, 12x10. I guess this is our last home , we have moved 17 times so it was easy to design based on past layouts.
love how the kitchen design looks like! I would go for the smoky quartz and one of the two cabinet colours you are leaning towards. Just one thing: have you considered where the bin and recycling will go? In our kitchen we have a pull-out cabinet underneath the sink where we keep the bin and I'd recommend that since this way it's neatly tucked away and out of sight :) Can't wait to see your finished kitchen!
I can’t agree more. Pullout cabinet for the trash and recycling under the sink was the best decision for my kitchen. Inside, above trash cans internal drawer for cleaning supplies. 👌🏻✨
We loved the idea of the pull out bins but have actually changed our coat cupboard door to open toward the kitchen and are turning that into a bit of a bin/appliance storage. Sounds pretty odd but I'll explain in a future vid - we realised we needed all the storage in the kitchen we could possibly get!
I really love the cashmere cabinet color, very neutral and would appeal to renters as it's not too taste specific. The dakar is nice, but the green may get old after a while.
Looking great so far! Just something to consider, you can ONLY get microwaves with the hinge on the left -- something that is driving me batty in my reno-kitchen at the moment -- just when it comes to which way your cupboards open.
One thing on the open shelves, love them but given you have a small kitchen do you not want to maximise the space as much as possible and use closed shelves/cupboards above the counters instead? Also another suggestion is the microwave could be like one of those floating ones over the counter tops, as part of the upper cabinets?
I'm going to go for shelves first and if it works out to not be practical I will just order some more upper cabinets another time. Hopefully it works out though as I REALLY want shelves 😂
Nick Morris is fab! Have you guys thought about an electric hob with built in extractor so you wouldn't need the hood above? I'm not sure if they're available as a gas option? And a hot water tap to give more counter space? Maybe your oven up high with microwave above it to the left of your new doors. Storage underneath could be for a pull out bin maybe? And you could have a couple of those pan drawers below your hob instead? LOOOOOOOOOVE the Dakar and the gold flecked quartz! Amazeballs! I want it! :) :)
Have you considered an in-line extractor fan in the ceiling? It removes the need for a cooker hood and can allow your open shelving or additional cupboard storage? I love the Dakar with gold vein worktop, by the way..
totally agree with the Homebase, wren, Howden's level of kitchens etc once you add the bells and whistles its soooooo expensive!!!!!! we so almost went with DIY kitchens but were too scared to trust ourselves with the measurements 😂😂 but next time for sure now we've learned a thing or too because they're soooo much more affordable
Have you considered wall to celine cubboards down one side? you’ll get alot more storage space? - you’ll loose work surface, but could have a hot tap(loose kettle) microwave can go in the cubboard. Ovens be higher up and hob can go on the other side?
So, not sure if this just a thing in America, but have you considered not having an exposed stove exhaust and instead installing a microwave above with a built in exhaust? Usually the exhaust hose would be hidden by an additional small cabinet above the microwave. This way you don’t lose counter space, you get back a shelf in your pantry, and gain a tiny bit of additional storage by way of the added cabinet.
Choices, choices...I think you could just about get away with the darker Dakar (which looks to have a greenish undertone?) with the Cloud Quartz in a South facing smallish kitchen but if you want the kitchen to be flooded with light I would go with the Mussel with the gold threaded Quartz. Don't overly worry though, all the choices that made it to the final selection are good ones and accessories and wall paint colour will tie things altogether. BTW - where's the washing machine going (understairs cupboard maybe)?
If you want to add a bit of colour to your kitchen, you could try painting a splashback in gloss paint. I did it a few years ago when we put in a new kitchen as a temporary measure as we couldn't quite afford the hand made tiles I really wanted and needed to save up. We painted splashback in F&B Calke Green and I wouldn't think of changing it now. I love the colour, its so cheery and the gloss is really easy to keep clean too. It turned out much better than the tiles, which were similar to ones we had in a previous house and were much higher maintenance on the cleaning front. Removing the kitchen grease that collects over the grout line on wobbly tiles is not a nice job.
I love the idea of green cabinets, although I know you have ruled them out. Green can still be a neutral colour and I think the shade of green you showed would work beautifully with your aesthetic. I would be a bit wary of black hardware as I think that will date, although it is not hard to update that if you need to. I was a bit concerned when you mentioned a preference for open shelving - kitchens are steamy, greasy places, so you need to be prepared to clean often and you have fewer places to hide away clutter. I was pleased to see overhead cabinets on one side in your design, which would be my suggestion. I think you are very sensible to spend a little more to get the kitchen that fits with your lifestyle. I did the same with mine and have never regretted it. I would just suggest you upgrade the cabinet next to the pantry to be drawers too. I have drawers everywhere apart from under the sink. They are the most efficient storage solution. It's also great to see you must have another option for the washing machine (did I miss what?). In Australia we all have separate laundries (or it's a cupboard laundry or in a bathroom). The thought of food prep and laundry in the same space horrifies me. Looking forward to seeing the kitchen completed. I bet you are too!
You're so right about green - I definitely think they could stand the test of time but just couldn't find a colour that matched what I was looking for within our budget. I have a sneaky feeling I will end up painting them green eventually but am ignoring this for now 😂 You're so right about drawers as well, they make everything soooo much easier in somewhere as busy as a kitchen. The washing machine will be moving into the big bathroom on the first floor (we're building a laundry cupboard inside to allow for more storage in the kitchen)
If you like green cabinets go for them; although right now are very trendy, I don't think they will ever go out of style. Green is an earthy tone so it can be considered a neutral and neutrals never go out of style
Not watched the video yet but when I heard u where using diy kitchens in ur last video I thought Woop Woop that'd what I'm planning on using. Going at Easter to the showroom. It's a few hours away so making a weekend of it. So interested to hear ur thoughts as only seen nick use this company
Oh please do let me know what the showroom is like! I am slightly concerned with ordering a kitchen without going there first but we've ordered a bunch of samples and have only heard good things - so hopefully it pays off!
@@FeedbyAutumn showroom was amazing. They had a section where everything was laid out with all the different size options and storage options. I was impressed with the quality. It's a similar concept to Ikea but just so much better. I forget you can even pick different colours for inside the cabinet. It was packed with people so deffo popular. Worth a visit if you want to go and finalize yours plans but are a bit unsure. And have a touch and feel 😂
For me its a little bit boxy next to the oven. I really like the selfs not cupboards. Over the oven both side. I know that needs to clean every time not to get dusty. :( But it makes kitchen sooo open. Colors are amazing.
@@FeedbyAutumn ah cool, I know that putting the washing machine in the bathroom is quite common in e.g. Germany. At least you don't have to deal with the noise when you are chilling downstairs!
I think I would go for the Calcutta work top and the middle unit choice of the final three🤔 it’s a real shame you can’t go for a slightly smarter cooker/hob. The range/Aga look that can really make a kitchen large or small have that little bit more character. Failing this a double oven !
When you gou for the kitchen you will buy exactly opposite of what you just said.😂😂..have you looked at ''''''used kitchen hub'""""???stunning and cheap

I have a sneaky feeling I will end up painting them green eventually but am ignoring this for now 😂
You're so right about drawers as well, they make everything soooo much easier in somewhere as busy as a kitchen.
Where are your necklaces from? I love them 🥰
Not watched the video yet but when I heard u where using diy kitchens in ur last video I thought Woop Woop that'd what I'm planning on using.
Where are you going to put your bins?
are you going to have some sort of utility room for washing machine/dryer?
We have moved the boiler and washing machine to our first floor bathroom and built a cupboard for it ☺️
@@FeedbyAutumn ah cool, I know that putting the washing machine in the bathroom is quite common in e.g.
If we ever end up in a home with a more grand kitchen an aga will be a non-negotiable! 😉
Still laughing with the "risotto story"... I personally prefer the dakar and calacatta combination.
Too many decisions is clearly stressing me out 😂😂
Where are you locating the washing machine?
We’ve moved it to our fairly large upstairs bathroom in a cupboard along with our boiler
where will your washer dryer be?
It’ll be in the family bathroom upstairs ☺️
Where are you planning to put your washing machine?
It'll be going in a laundry cupboard we're adding to the big bathroom upstairs 😊

GREEN CUPBOARDS - MUSCLE
🥰🤗🤗
You may want to be more careful which tabs you have open when sharing your screen. Was that a torrent site I spied? 😉
Where's the washing machine going?
We're building a cupboard in the upstairs bathroom for it!
@@FeedbyAutumn ok makes sense
When you gou for the kitchen you will buy exactly opposite of what you just said.😂😂..have you looked at ''''''used kitchen hub'""""???stunning and cheap
Hahahah you couldn't be more correct - trust me to pivot at the last moment 😂
