Personally, I have to say that criticising Jurassic World for being too similar to Jurassic Park is completely missing the point. Jurassic World in that regard is a straight up adaptation of the The Lost World novel by Michael Crichton. The film is self-aware that it is basically just a bigger version of Jurassic Park and even pokes fun at it. And unlike The Force Awakens, this goes further than just saying "hey look, another Death Star". The film uses it nature as an over-the-top sequel to point out how stupid over-the-top sequels and their quest of always being greater and better than the original actually are.

    • @Peter_Cordes
      @Peter_Cordes 4 роки тому +1

@@GermanLeftist - Ok, but that was *not* what Dan was criticizing in his JP vs. JW video. He was pointing out that the storytelling is clunky (show don't tell), it emphasizes unimportant details, and builds to a finale but then has a bunch more movie to get through. If you thought he was criticizing it for being too similar, maybe give it another watch.

    Content I’d love to see:
    - Charts! (I know you’re doing them but wanted to go on the record)
    - Love video essays.
    - I’d love too see a kinda like film kid tutorial. For instance. A series of films in chronological order to watch for those who want to get a deeper appreciation of film and film history. “Battleship Potemkin”, “The Jazz Singer”, “Citizen Kane”, “Lawrence of Arabia”, “Jaws” etc (like a mini film history school)
    - why is a classic.
    - Maybe a series breaking down the language of film
    - the process of analysis for film criticism.
    - Maybe some recommendations for international films.
    - Star Trek, Star Trek, Star Trek (especially Discovery). I grew up on TNG and that my main love, I like TOS films but I have fallen in love with Discovery.
Overall though. I feel like you’re a kindred spirit when it comes to the love of film, film business and trek, age wise. I’ve been a critic in my life, did the film school thing too. I’m on a different path but this kind of content and community is fundamentally part of my DNA

The prospect of a series of video essays sounds fantastic, and I can’t wait to support them. But in the near-term, I think it would be especially valuable if you would curate our film-viewing experience from quarantine. So many of us have accounts with streaming services but have trouble navigating the film offerings available there. Your reviews have always led me in the right direction thus far, and now more than ever, I would so appreciate if you would direct your curatorial eye toward the Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime accounts that many of us struggle to fully utilize.
Thank you, and again - congratulations!

I like more in-depth (not length but actual depth) reviews/essays not just about a single movie but about something part of a movie and how X new movie embodies it. Ryan Hollinger does a really great job of this with his reviews. Its not just about "I liked it or I didn't like it", but instead about the craft, genre, use of tropes, etc while also talking about the movie and other movies like it.
Another great thing I never got enough of was Belated Media's "My favorite film" series where you would sit with another person (youtuber, Screen Junkie, etc) and just watch or talk about a film they are passionate about. An outside perspective on a movie you may or may not enjoy.

Really excited to see this channel take off! This is probably the first film-based channel I'm subscribing to from the very beginning, as every other one (SJU, Cinefix, etc...) had already been established for a while before ever discovering them. Can't wait to see all the charts/reviews when everything eventually resumes, but for now, I think I'll be happy with whatever you choose to review. Maybe some older movies, underrated ones, nostalgic films that had an impact on you, etc...

I'm a huge fan, so I'm along for the ride. Dan Murrell is someone with whom I would genuinely like to talk. He'd probably be horribly bored, but it would be great for me! It wouldn't be among the first things I said but I would be interested to ask why he has a cricket bat....

Would love to see Scoops McGee show up whenever you have to talk about movie news, since I know a lot of times it's pretty dry or there isn't much to report. Having Scoops giving some fake tips could liven it up, even as an intro to news.

My idea: Movie homages done on TV shows. I have seen so many over the years, some good, some bad. For instance, Step by Step (TGIF) did a blatant rip off of Waynes World. It was......ok. Meanwhile, the A-Team and Ducktales did homages to James Bond with their comic relief characters (Murdock/Launchpad). Both were good.

I fully support your readiness to have a change of space after the baby years you dedicated to Screen Junkies. I'm really happy there is no bad blood between you all and I'll still continue to support you both completely!
For a channel idea, it would be fun to watch you go down a journey into the rabbit hole of anime. Or even just reviewing anime movies would be really great. I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on Satoshi Kon's various works.

  • @Str4vv

I would love some "Devil´s Advocate" / "Ugly Duckling" /"Defense of the Indefensible" format, talking about movies that got a bad rep, because it was "cool to hate" or general public perception being "echo-chambery". Pointing out aspects/scenes that such movies did great, things that are easy to (dis-)miss, etc.
There is so much nit-picky, lowest common denominator and overall negative content out there, I can´t stand it anymore. Looking at you, Cinema Sins.
For me the honest trailers were close enough to "tough love" and "laughing with the movies" for my taste, but anything more aggressively negative is just...sad.

Dude YES!!! So excited for you Dan!! I love charts, current movies, older movies, tv shows, and any of your thoughts on them would be a lot of fun to hear! One thing that I think would be nice to see would be a movie/tv show recommendation that you think slipped through the cracks and deserves more attention. Maybe once a month? (or week depending on how many you have up your sleeve.) I’m not as much of a film nerd as I want to be, so having some suggestions from a source I generally agree with in taste would be welcome.
