Hey it's Dan and Dara from Texas we're getting ready to go in in March to pick up a VW bus 1978 it's blue and white my brother is giving it to me and my wife we are bringing it back home to Texas we're so excited about this this new journey I just retired August 14th on my birthday we have grandkids and we are going to have so much fun😊 I'll be watching your journeys
Nothing beats driving an old VW bus - they are slow, not always reliable, it's like driving a brick BUT is absolutely wonderful! It doesn't matter where I go, people take pictures and I have heard so many stories! It just brings joy to people which is amazing. I let kids go in and play around and have even taken people for rides!
No truer words were said! Exactly what Ben said it's like driving a brick😂 Love it! Yes it's always fun to see the joy on peoples faces! We love the community it brings as people come up to chat with us about it! Makes it so special! Thank you so much for watching and coming along the ride!
@@benandtabinn Haha!! Enjoy it! Welcome to the club! If you're ever in Pennsylvania, there's a little VW outing for a weekend in June every year. Here's a little video of it from last year if you get a minute to watch it: ua-cam.com/video/5zgEAHa7Qu8/v-deo.html&t
@@jamie-r2034 oh that sounds wonderful! We will definitely watch that video! Sounds like a super fun weekend! Thank you for the invite! There's no club we'd rather be in!
Loved this whole vid, I came across all of the same surprises when bringing my t2 home and coming across more every day haha. Never driven a classic car before and my first was bringing her back on a 190 mile journey 😂 keep keeping the dream alive 🙌🤍
I had this exact van. 1978 Westfalia champagne edition. The champagne edition was the two tone brown and white and added chrome. I still have the "trash can box" Best vehicle I ever had. It came with fuel injection but when that did not work they would put on carburetors. Best of luck on your travels. You are in for a lot of attention and peace signs as you travel on your journey.
My wife accused me of having an affair with mostly women waving to me while I drove my 78 CE westy around. LOL. Who is that woman ? No idea. That one ? No idea....she did not believe me....
There is a splash pan under the pedals. Keep an eye on temperature and make sure you have the seal between the body and engine. You CAN overheat an air cooled engine....like driving fast for a long distance. That is why you have a 10 gallon fuel tank ! They want you to stop and take a break. I have a 78 CE westy but Previous owner let it sit out, so we have a rust, around the windows to repair....but it's my favorite bus. I also have vanagons and splits.
First mv I drive when minor 1976 Kombi 1700 cc. Yello colour. Then my dad upgrade 1978 , 1800 cc green/white and our last one was "top of range" dark cream/white 2000 L , Executive Auto. 3speed 2.0 liter. All aircooled. And best mv on any gravel road. Was 16 yrs old driving myself alone 150 km/h on gravel @ off clock. Interior same as yours. We also have a VW tent which attached at slidingdoor , and clip loose to drive when camping. Hey! I just found your youtube ...and well...I too am the proud owner of an identical 78 Champagne II edition Westy!! I've had mine for about 23 years now, and it is the best, of the 3 vw campers, that I have owned! I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine! I look forward to following in your adventures!
Ahhh amazing! It's so fun to virtually meet so many who own the same VW! We love ours and now that the weather is finally warm enough to take it out! Excited to make more memories in it! Do you by chance know how to tighten the gas peddle? Ours wiggles around when driving Thank you for joining along in the adventure Jim!
Looks like a nice Westy. I have had both bay and Vanagon westies for over 30 years. Be nice to it, and it will return the favor to you. Enjoy the ride. Take care and best wishes, Chuck in Kentucky 73 Westy 83 Westy
I second the name Coco....seems perfect for your new Bus. We have an early Bay ('68) and it's incredible to see the differences with your '78 and how far Volkswagen came in design over the years before switching to the Vanagons. Have fun & keep posting!
Welcome to the vw combi family enjoy the journey there will be many ups and downs, they're a great vehicle if you are prepared to learn about them will enjoy watching you guys sort the car out
thesamba is home for all aircooled things, Facebook ususally has vw groups based on area....it's been a year, how's it going ? Most old time mechanics can fix these. First, get good quality parts, OEM German if you can. Points, fuel pump (electric if fuel injected), adjust valves, oil changes, -- fairly simple. Fuel injection came out in 75 and that makes things a little more complex. Good luck !
Current my own mv VW Amarok 2.0 BiTDI 4MOTION AUTO. My whole life VW and 2 Audi. A lot GTI /VR6 Golf's. Since 1974 up to latest all VW/Audi of all models origenal pamflets I collected even your bus origenal pamflet in my possession. Enjoy your "PLUSBUS"
Please forgive me for asking but could you remember what the original license plate number was when you bought it in Monterey, CA? Was it 011 WIX? If so, my dad was the original owner. He bought it at Al Sanchez VW in Gilroy, CA in 1978. The camper looks exactly like my dad’s.
Congratulations on joining the Westfalia family :) I know you will love yours as much as I do mine. I also know I will enjoy watching you learn all about it and make it your own! FYI, What you called the heater is actually the thermostat and accessories for running the fridge:).
Thank you! We are so happy to be part of the Westfalia family! Thank you for joining us on this crazy but amazing ride! Ohhhhhhh! Thank you! When we bought it we didn't get any info on the interior from the sellers as they weren't present when we bought it! That is so good to know! Thank you!
The fridge is called an absorption fridge, you can have it on when driving and when hooked up at a campsite, they draw too much power to run them on 12v
Ruby. Dixie. Dolly. Lillian, Lolly, Missy, Moxy ( Moxy means balls but girl style. IE Tough chic). Pheaby, Pennelope, Ingrid. Those were considerations for our bus. We named her Smokin Dixie because for some odd reason the classic plates we got say something similar to that with a number. Congrats, I hope things are running well. We have a 76 Westy and love her. Got her 3 months ago. My wife just said lets do it already. Shipped her in from Texas to CT.
Ahhh those are amazing name recommendations! Love Lolly especially! Smokin Dixie sounds like a legend! Yes! We were the same! Let's just do it! And definitely done regret it! Thank you for coming along side us in this journey! ❤️

beautiful. Brown and white were original, but I like this better. YOu never see the cabinets in such great shape.

big difference from early bay to late also. 68 has a lot of One Year Only parts too. FWIW
Yes, I know all about the one year only parts. We spent 3 years restoring our Bus ourselves. It's amazing how many there are!
Love it guys! So stoked for you!

My husband just got our VW van. We have camped in it once. We love it. We are looking for a good VW mechanic just to check it out.

Noted your bus was used in Bluetti promo but you are using Jackery in the video. Which do you prefer?
I have a 1976 Volkswagen westfellia that I inherited. It is not carbirated. I am debating getting a Subaru engine swap for it
