very good video, spent ages taking apart and reassembling the drive and couldnt get it working until i watched your vid and saw it was the arm at the back that was loose, saved me alot of time :)
I wanted to thank you for this. I used this video to get my mis-aligned drive up and running like a charm! I just needed to ensure it was secured to the chassis so the bottom v-shaped part didn't pop out of alignment again.
I'd like to thank you for your precious help. I replaced a blu ray drive on PS3 but I had problem with alignment and your video helped me to solve it. Thank you very much
Wanted to give thanks. My 2-yr old stuck 3 additional discs in mine when it already had one in it, so it made a total of four discs in it. I found this video and found it very useful, also seen others, though I think this was the better one.
Dude you are freaking awesome, I got stuck with the machine gun issue and thanks to you I got it back together smooth (even though the lens is busted and the replacement will not come anytime soon as there is not money near me, damn crisis). So thanks again and you get your positive vote from me.
@Norocmorth The main data cable can be obtained separately from the rest of the drive. Replacing this cable with a new one could fix the problem. Also, before replacing the cable, check that the three switches on the small board by the right arm are all working. If the switches are broken, this could affect the ability to insert a disc as the system thinks there's one inside (or can't tell that one's being inserted).
Thanks a lot. I found some guitar picks on my Blu Ray drive (yes I have small kids :-D ) . Without your video I would not have opened it in the first place. And really helped me putting all mechanics back to place. invaluable help
Wow omg this fixed my ps3! Dude I took off that v-shaped metal brace from the bottom of the drive, realigned it so that both cylindrical things on the ends of it went into the black plastic sliders on each side of the drive, and it was working again! Thanks bro!
Yo! U r very tech wise and detailed. I want to thank u for the help u have shared. I hope u and your business are successful now and in the future. U r a good tech Sony Playstation should be paying you. U r good person stay real my dude!!!
Wow thank you so much for posting. I messed with the mechanism for hours and I swore i had done everything wrong trying to understand it. It was simply the peg on the lever was not in the slot on the gear side. Who knows how it popped out. Then again who knows how sony manages to make a drive that directs dust and debris so well onto the laser!
@TheBlackBoxPSN It does sound like the laser itself is faulty. This can happen even if you're seeing light because other parts of the assembly may have failed (laser pickups, monitoring diode, weak laser, etc.)
never mind I got it, I had to reset the arms that first direct the dvd in, one of them was 1 notch off and was causing it to go in at a different angle just missing the center spindle, now it goes all the way in and mounts, spins, and ejects like new.. so happy! thought Id end up breaking something lol. Thnx for the vids, it helped me to understand how it all worked and helped me fix my problem. Time to play that new game I just got in the mail today, was so angry when it didnt work,, happy now!
@sambowker1980 The drive is essentially dead until that hub clamp is replaced. On the PS3, the spindle has a magnet in the center and the hub clamp is just a round piece of plastic with some metal in the center.
Thanks man!!! YLOD with disc still in drive, replaced my laser and tried to put it back into "no-disc" position for hours. NOT ENGAGED... it could have been sooo easy. Thanks 2 U I can enjoy my easter holidays!!!
Apparently the issue was a loose connection on the drive. Thought it was in tight, apparently not. My launch PS3 is running smooth once again! Disregard my comment below. Your videos are great junker. Thanks again!
@YoMama844 Your data cable going from the controller board to the PS3 mainboard may have a problem. The cable itself may be defective, or it may not be connected properly. This is what to check first if the drive seems to be completely dead.
@TrailersOfTheDecade Could be that the big data cable going to the mainboard has a problem, or it could be that the drive just isn't getting power. If you've had the system apart previously, I'd check the data cable first.
There's a small motor that drives all the gears, which has a worm gear on it. It's secured with two screws with large flat heads. Taking this motor out momentarily will allow you to move the arms up and down.
@Oxwhitelightning Make sure you've got the studs on each end of the lever properly placed into the pockets on the end of each plastic arm. If you get one side in, the other side should just fall into place, and then the lever should move when you move one of the plastic arms. This should in turn move the other arm if the lever is right.
Dude thank you for this video. I had someone work on my bros ps3 and he did a hack job. Long story short the guy swapped out my bros broken 60gb mother board with a 20gb and gave it back to us all messed up. The power button didn't work and the bd drive was all messed up. With your video I was able to fix my bros ps3. Thanks again.
There is a spot near the end of the left arm's travel where you have to push up just a bit harder (but not use too much force). The rack on the arm should disengage from the black gear. You can try pulling the right arm down as you push the left arm up, since they're connected at the rear.
The small motor that drives the transport can be momentarily removed. It's in the lower-center and secured with two screws with flat heads. This is causing the gear train to not move (so you can't move the left arm without difficulty)
I think the best advice here is to make sure the two black arms are correctly installed, then verify the metal lever in the back that connects them is properly installed. The holes that the lever goes in will be at the very end of the circular slots that the lever pokes through. (one hole at the bottom, and one at the top.) Then make sure the lever doesn't move freely without also moving the arms as shown in the video.
@Quanbigdog It should work if they're the same type of drive (the connections between the drive with KEM-400AAA transport and KEM-410ACA transport are different and incompatible) and if you transfer the controller board from the original drive to the new drive. You need the original controller board because the PS3 has a unique drive key per drive.
They should be situated such that the little round pieces that stick up are at the bottom when the loader doesn't have a disc inserted. I don't think you can fit them any other way since they're made differently to fit on each side.
Hi and thank you very much for your PS3 disassembling/reassembling videos. They are shot good. And even don't have any annoying music in background, hehe. Anyway, they've been a great help to me. Now I just figured out that I reassembled my bd-drive wrong. Alltho' I have a hunch it won't work after assembling it right, but that's an another story and I'll try to figure it out then.
@TheLochie7 probably the disc sensor is bad. If it makes noise like it's taking a disc in, then stops, but then you can put a disc in if you push it in halfway (the motor will turn back on when you pushed it in far enough), this sensor is your problem.
@akib4018 It's probably better for you to view the "revised emergency eject" video and see if you've got the drive aligned in the proper position. Then the "insertion drive" arms should swing without catching anything below.
@n70643 It's probably something misaligned. The best course of action is to make sure the drive is lined up correctly and test it with a CD you don't care about. (Of course, if your PS3 is still in warranty, contacting Sony for a replacement console would be the best way. Unfortunately they won't replace any scratched media.)
@TheBlackBoxPSN Maybe the metal arm on the bottom that ties the two arms together is misaligned. Try taking this metal arm out, and then adjusting the left arm so it's all the way up (off the gear), and the right arm so it's all the way down, and then replace the metal arm on the bottom so the studs on each end go into the holes on each of the plastic arms.
First of all thanks for the great videos. I cleaned my lens and have been unable to test it because I can't get the disc to feed into the drive. The blue led flashes when I put the disc in half way.. but it won't feed in. This wasn't an issue before. I've followed this video closely but the problem remains. Sort of at a loss at the moment.
I had a problem where my PS3 thought there was a disc still inside cause I took it out manually when I got the YLOD. But I just moved the left arm up and its fixed now, thanks a lot
@0merta14 Once it's realigned, it shouldn't be an issue, but now there's nothing preventing a second disc from being inserted when one's already inside...
Thanks man. Mine didn't want to raise the laser, so the disc just was going in nonstop. Turned out to be the metal piece to be loose. Thenks for the vid, using it i completely fixed my PS3 :)
@YourModernWarfare3 The three gears go into the "insertion drive" part that was on top of the bottom half of the loader. I have a couple of videos about how it goes back together (one for the old fat and another for the new fat)
I just fixed the buddies one there. It had a differand drive but this video helped to fix it with no probs. The boomarang shaped thing was not on correctly very flimsey. Cheers mate.
@0merta14 If this is in the front of the drive, these white pieces can just be pushed back down if they're sticking up after you align the drive. They should just fall down into their proper place.
when i made sure the lever on the bottom was properly in place and still, only the right track moved along with it. the rightside if you view it from the top. the lever fit into a slot and connected to the right track but the left track, i could not find a slot for the lever to fit into. which means both tracks do not move when i push one. only one moves. i think you said both should move when you push one. idk if you can help me. maybe something broke off inside the track and i cant tell even with a flashlight. maybe i missed something...i think the ps3 was used. i got it as a gift. like i said when you turn it upside down where the spin lever looking thing is (viewing from the bottom), i dont see anything for that lever to connect to on the track on the right. (left if viewing from top). i dont see a pocket for that knob on the lever on the track on the right
You will have to remove the controller board from the bottom of the drive (two extra black screws on the opposite side of where you removed the three screws to get the top metal cover off) and two silver screws at the rear of the drive itself. Then the bottom metal cover can be removed, exposing the ribbon cables too.
@dtube07 Probably something still not quite right with the loader. My "revised emergency eject" video will give a quick rundown on everything to check.
@junker15 Hey, man. Thank you so much for your prompt answer! I'm really sad, because this is the 2nd PS3 I buy, and I don't live in the US (it's way cheaper there). Man, this Ps3 Slim isn't 11 months old, and I don't know what to do. It seems the disc is spinning. The blu-ray driver did that once, then it worked, now it just won't work... :( After trying to read the disc, it makes a noise (the same noise it makes when it's unloading a disc), and the ticking continues and stops later. :(
@daveLFCfan2 The laser unit is probably bad on your system. This video will help line everything back up after you've been inside (for a laser replacement, etc.)
@onenaghi There really sounds like something's not quite aligned properly still. Try my "revised emergency eject" video to make sure you've got the mechanics and the top aligned right.
@YoMama844 I think they still charge $150 for this service. I believe they do take out-of-warranty repairs. If you have the money, I would almost suggest you get a NEW PS3 Slim instead because you're probably going to have less of a problem with that going forward.
Hi, i get the machine gun sound. The left arm is engaged with the black gear and if i try and move the left arm up it will not go any further up. It is not fully engaged with the gear but the spokes touch each other.
That sounds like the "Yellow Light Of Death" problem. The heat gun method is well-documented here on UA-cam, so the fix is available if you're confident you can do it without breaking more stuff (the chips can easily be heated up too much if you're not careful :o)
@junker15 I finally figured it out. But then I noticed that my discs weren't being read. Once I opened it back up the motor was ripped off from the wires, and I manually put the disc in my ps3 by sliding the disc through the arms in the front of the bluray that hit the switch to read the disc, then i Slide the left black arm down and it brings the right black arm up. The Laser boots up and the disc spins, but it doesn't read my disc. The Laser sometimes is red then blue at other times.
You could try removing the V-shaped pivot arm on the bottom that connects the two arms. This will let each arm move independently. Maybe something else is jamming it all up.
3:08, That is a very important point there, Make sure the tiny pegs on the level fit in the Tracks !! I missed 1 and everytime my Game would stick, when I put my drive back together.. Thanks Junker15, you managed to help me with my Drive.. :o)
@YoMama844 I have a "disc insertion drive" and "New PS3 Fat disc insertion drive (part 2)" video that probably will help. The first one was from my old PS3 and the second one is from my newer one with the other type of optical drive.
Thanks for this video, I found it very useful. One thing that I had a problem with though is that the right arm on my blue ray drive doesnt move as smoothly as the arm in your video. I cant figure out why there is so much resistance on the right arm. Even if you could show me how to take the arm off the frame would be useful.
@callumhxcore The top is probably not lined up quite right. Use the easy way, and then before you put the top back on, see my "optical drive top" video to see how to put the top on correctly.
@slappypappy03 Nothing broke and you're not making a mistake; Sony designed the new fat PS3 drive more cheaply (if you can believe that), and not only left one of the pockets off, but that drive now requires the metal back to be installed to run the drive properly since that supports the pivot arm.
Two gears came out of the Square thing at the bottom side that you were showing @4:53 how do I put it back.. Can you show or lead me in the direction where i could find how to reassemble that part?
My left arm does not have a pocket for the pivot arm in the back to fit into. Doesn't look like anything broke off or anything. Not really sure how it should be lined up.
Hey, thanks for the reply! But how is that removed exactly? I couldn't find any screws aside from the ones to dismantle the plastic for the top. Chances are I'll be trying it again later today since I have a better grasp at disassembling it, but the other issue is that I can't remove the ribbon unlike how most people can in their videos because mine attaches at a point underneath the power... drive... or whatever it's called. I tried detaching that, but again... the screws I tried didn't work.
took it apart, the left arm was touching the black gear with the teeth so i moved it out of the way. but i cannot move both arms freely. the left one clicks back and forth, but the right one is totally jammed. no free movement with OR without the metal arm on the back connecting them both. im stumped.
@rafanoutube I don't have any PS3 Slim hardware available, so it's just my best guess, but this really sounds like the laser has given out on you. This is especially likely if you insert the disc and don't hear it spin up.
@junker15 thanx man but this is where the madness begins, tired of being denied my playstation i cut them off ,do you think this could be an issue once realigned????
Any advice? I have an 80GB, replaced the laser module, but must have messed up the reassembly. It pulls a disc in, but the motor keeps pulling after its all the way in, and it still doesn't see the disc. Eject works fine, though.
Story time! Two years ago, my 80GB Backwards compatible PS3 went kaboom. I had to realign the laser. I messed up. We bought a new PS3, a shitty slim. My point? I watched this video and saw the part about taking the motor out. So I tried it, and guess what? IT FUCKING WORKED. I love you. I love you the way I love my old newly working PS3. I want you to live happy, win the lottery, have a family! Anything and everything good!
Hi, thanks for sharing this video. I had trouble with my blue ray drive and replace the laser deck. Problem now is, that the drive is not taking in the disc anymore. I can slide it in manually but the mechanism wont put it in place. any solution for that? Thanks
My PS3 drive is currently open as we speak, and I'm trying to get to 1:35 where you said that you took off the lever in the back, etc. How did you open and take out that part? I need to get the lever properly aligned, because my right arm seems to be detached. What part do I unscrew to get this open? Thanks a bunch!
@buddhaknowsall CECHG01 (older 40GB fat). My new PS3 is a CECHH01 (new 40GB fat with the new lens), but I haven't been inside that cause I have a 3 year warranty on it.
@XRedInB1ueX My "revised emergency eject" video should help with this. It's probably a case of the pivot arm on the back disconnected from one side (assuming you have the old fat drive)
Hi. I spent hours trying to fix mine. I checked every possiblity but mine keeps making a clacking noise when inserting disc. It won't go in all the way but it WILL eject. should the arms move pretty freely if the motor is lifted off? I noticed that the arms are hard to move by hand in opposite directions to make it lift the laser.
Thx for the reply but its still not moving even with the motor removed. it seems like its jammed on something but i have no idear what on. Is there some way of removing the arm off and just somehow lift it back.
@MrMuertosk8 You may want to take a look at my "revised emergency eject" video for a quick rundown of everything to check if you're having loading or eject problems.
@smikados10 Search UA-cam for "PS3 recovery menu" and try the "Repair database" option first. If that doesn't work, try the "Restore filesystem" option. Make sure you have a backup of the hard drive BEFORE accessing the recovery menu. You can try "Restore PS3 system" in the recovery menu or under the System settings in XMB as a last resort, but that reformats your PS3 entirely. If none of these work, the new laser is probably faulty and should be returned for a replacement.
If I open up my PS3, will that disqualify my PS3 for paid repair from Sony? For instance, my warranty is already void because I've owned for over a year AND I've replaced my hard drive. But if I try this and it doesn't solve my problem and put it back together, will they still fix mine for the advertised $150 repair fee?
My Left arm is stuck on the gear. The teeth are still intact, and it only moves down. When I push the left arm up it simply does not move at all, just stays on the gear.
Ugh, I wonder if I can do all of that without totally screwing things up. The thing is, I don't have a controller board underneath like you do, I just have the metal thing underneath. Like my large ribbon cable, my PS3 was just made differently. I'd like to record a video of it and show you, but I don't have a digital camera for it. Well, I have two actually... but one of them is missing its battery (blame my dad), and the other is missing the proper USB cable (blame my sister). Thanks again!
we just started to repair ps3 consoles in our shop...and without ur videos i wouldnt be able to do it...thnx man
very good video, spent ages taking apart and reassembling the drive and couldnt get it working until i watched your vid and saw it was the arm at the back that was loose, saved me alot of time :)

Dude!!! Your videos rule, you saved me a couple hundred dollars, couple hundred hours of gameplay, and a hell of a headache. 5/5

2:43 That was it for me. I didn't notice both arms had to be engaged with both plastic rails. Thanks man, you saved me A LOT of time.

Thanks 2 U I can enjoy my easter holidays!!!
I just wanted to thank you for your video....at :45 seconds you showed me exactly what was wrong with mine. Thanks!!!!

Great video you were a lot of help. Only person that explained the machine gun sound that I was having. Problem solved thank you
This video fixed at least one of my problems. Thank you for the detailed work.
@VideoGameExplorers It's the big cable that goes underneath and attaches to the mainboard

@VideoGameExplorers That sounds like the data cable is damaged in some way. That's usually the case when nothing happens.
Thanks for the help aligning my Bluray drive mech after a new laser drive. Works like a champ now.

@Chazzos nope :/ I want to know what exactly might be stopping it from sucking them in.
That sounds like the "Yellow Light Of Death" problem. The heat gun method is well-documented here on UA-cam, so the fix is available if you're confident you can do it without breaking more stuff (the chips can easily be heated up too much if you're not careful :o)
@junker15
I finally figured it out.
I had the same issue as KMaan91, but this video got me sorted! Thanks.
thanks fro uploading the video, it got me out of trouble. thanks again.
You could try removing the V-shaped pivot arm on the bottom that connects the two arms. This will let each arm move independently. Maybe something else is jamming it all up.
Thanks for the help, Your demonstrations are very helpful
3:08, That is a very important point there, Make sure the tiny pegs on the level fit in the Tracks !! I missed 1 and everytime my Game would stick, when I put my drive back together..
Thanks Junker15, you managed to help me with my Drive.. :o)
thanks man... mine is a little different...but u save my ass... My PS3 works again... you are the man Junker15 !
@YoMama844 I have a "disc insertion drive" and "New PS3 Fat disc insertion drive (part 2)" video that probably will help. The first one was from my old PS3 and the second one is from my newer one with the other type of optical drive.
thank bro just fix my ps3 finally.. had it put up for 4 months thank you.
This video saved me 126 dollars. TY Soooooo MUCH
Thanks for this video, I found it very useful.
@scottyorpie I don't have access to a PS3 with the newer drive yet, so it'll be awhile
Thanks
@Blakeee2012 You'll probably want to see my "revised emergency eject" video. I go over how to reset the loader and properly replace the plastic top.
you know those two gray plastic arms in the middle under the loading arms? which way should those pont down?
Thank you my friend, you're a life saver!
@junker15
I do this with the White magnet on top of the disc. Is this a cause of a bad Laser?
Because whatever I do it won't work.
My Left arm is stuck on the gear. The teeth are still intact, and it only moves down. When I push the left arm up it simply does not move at all, just stays on the gear.
Removing the bottom metal cover from the drive will give you access to a V-shaped metal arm on the bottom of the drive.
thanks for this it helped fix my blu ray drive because it was stuck
This was really helpful! thanks for posting.
