I've seen a lot of documentaries about the Battle of Actium, but none have explained the origins of Octavian's Fleet. Many thanks for filling the gap in my education of this event.
I remember that scene from the movie Ben-Hur, when the Counsel was tasked by Caesar to seek out destroy a Macedonian fleet that had been raiding Roman Ports, commerce and then a battle ensued between the the two fleets. I'm not sure if that was relevant to the battle of Actium ?
On a recent visit to the MET in NYC I was struck by how small the weapons and helmuts were of the ancient greeks..tiny almost childlike. Even the armor worn by knights on display were only slightly bigger. Its an amazing museum
@2manynegativewaves not at the MET. they have childrens armor too..This armor is top quality of the day made for famous grown up knights...there were very small people in the 1500's...and the ancient greek or spartan armor is tiny...go see it..
Yep. We all know that Richard really liked Liz's curves. My dad took me to see that one when it was first released. Thou I think Who's Afraid of Virginia Woof was Richards and Liz's best work together.
I have read about Actium and this episode was great to watch. I was not aware that the Liburnas were built by another nation nor they were considered pirates but this just make the historical account that much better!
Another great video as always. I have an idea, how about history that was just made today (the day this video came out)? Bugatti just did over 300mph in a production road car. That is huge news in the automotive world. They have a rich history worth remembering.
Great videos. You have a lot of Canadian viewers, including me, so you should consider talking about the HMCS Bonaventure. My father-in-law is the youngest pilot to have flown off the carrier, and just celebrated his 75th birthday. Great stories. He flew the Grumman Tracker, doing mainly anti-submarine missions.
I really really enjoy your videos so much great information that needs to be remembered packed into a short package please keep up the good work thank you very much
Thanks for this fascinating slice of history. Illerium marked the farthest extent of the Apostil Paul according to his notes in his letter to the Romans. The context is set in the difficulties experienced during his travels.
Hi. Thanks a lot for all the history you share with us. Maybe you can make a video about the "Guayaquil and Quito Railway Company" founded about 1896 in New Jersey to build the Ecuadorian Railway. Thanks and greetings from Ecuador.
To point out on the map each place where the people he was describing came from. Just a suggestion. It would have been a little easier to follow during the story. For me anyway.
Thank you, sir. Great job, as always!. You covered this topic brilliantly. My name is James, and I love history also. I have been following your channel for about a year, and I have a couple questions. Do you do your video editing yourself? Do you have any suggestions on how to proceed with historically based content on UA-cam? I know you did a video which covered part of these questions. But I would like to put up quality content as good as you. I would appreciate any advice you might have to offer. Thanks again for your great subject matter and inspiration.
I use Power Director and do the editing myself. I think we could get better quality for much higher cost, but YT is always walking the line between cost and return. As for history on UA-cam, as with all content, produce good quality and people will watch it. Our cardinal rule is to make videos that we would want to watch. There are some unique challenges with monetization for a history channel- send me an email to thehistoryguyYT@gmail.com and I am happy to give more advice.
Thank you so much for these great stories. SUGGESTION: please do a story of the travels that Martha Washington made to each of the winter encampments of Gen Washington and our new military.
Haa gosh man....Man's greatest invention "WAR"....We simply would not be here without it...Pirates once come to the rescue...Rrrrrruh.....Well done as always....Thanks as always very well...!
@@willoughby1888 Well OK, but that is not the voice of Steve Miller or Boz Scaggs. I have to question that video. I have been a Steve Miller fan since the mid 60s and I am sure that title is incorrect. If it listed an album it could be verified.

Happy Labor Day Mr. The History Guy Quick question for you. Where do you get your bow ties? I am quite fond of them and of course tie my own. I'd like to tap into your source. Many Thanks and keep up the good work. P.S. My teacher wife loves gathering interesting snippets to better understand the larger picture history she teaches and/or have small stories to catch the attention of 3rd and 4th graders.
Only 2 minutes in and I am so glad i learned Greek and Latin in school. They really are great languages to have at least some understanding of if you are interested in ancient history. Even if it is only to help you feel connected when you see manuscripts written in them
I couldn’t sleep last night and spent my time on Wikipedia. Dunno how, but most of that time was spent reading about piracy during the time of the Roman republic. So I guess I willed this episode into being with the power of insomnia
Interesting! There is a town on the Slovenian -Adriatic coast which is named "Piran" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piran). I heard from the locals that this name could come from "pirate".
I'm actually impressed that ships of that age and design could achieve 14 knots. Even in the 18th and 19th centuries sail ships were hard pressed to make that kind of speed.
It's just plain awesome to wake up and find a new History Guy post,... going to be a good day! and Caesar made the Pirates who captured and ransomed him pay!
I want to thank you for all you do! I would like to further thank you for not falling in with the politically correct crowd and continuing to use BC ...
A history guy you said make suggestions I can't find anything decent. On UA-cam about the Berserkers they have always fascinated me. Because when I was young I could terrify them sir. I was terrifying. I love their tactics. Cuz when they were on the offensive people had never seen anything like that. And they were hired out by kingdoms. And they weren't afraid of nothing. So please do one on the Berserkers. Sincerely Silas because it's history. Deserves to be remembered Thank you, sir. Thank you for your service and your sacrifice.🤺🦅👍
Wasn't Julius Caesar once taken captive by pirates and then ransomed ? That's another great story involving pirates. Actually I think that happened to Saint Patrick too, so you can put those stories on your list for another great video Mr History Guy !
Congratulations History Guy on 500k subscribers. Well deserved. On your way to 1,000,000+ Would you ever consider doing some cross-promotion/collaboration with Indy and Spartacus of Time Ghost Army.
Just a possible idea for a segment..... Monk Eastman he was the toughest man in Hell’s Kitchen, lead one of the largest and most violent gangs then fought in WW1 showing his courage and caring for his fellow men......one of the great turnarounds in life situations
Drawing of the Liburna ship @ 6:51 has the oarsmen sitting in the wrong direction. They should be sitting with their backs towards the bow of the ship.
Thanks History Guy. Is there a final word on the "Boat-people" of the Mediterranean. Prof Barnes, Cultural History of Western Civilization, 1937 Dover Press, 3 vol-set suggests that these pirates later occupied Gaza and replaced the Philistine peoples, which may explain a lot today. Is there a realistic "pre" post modernist view?
I'd like to see a video about the north Burma campaign in 1944. Everyone thinks that the British drove the Japanese out of Burma by themselves. However two Chinese armies also attacked the Japanese army in northern Burma at the same time. The Chinese defeated the Japanese in northern Burma after about a year of very heavy fighting allowing the Burma road to reopen. That's history that deserves to be remembered.
Love the history guys smile every time he gets to insert his “all good stories start with Pirates” 😂😂😂😂
