Can I get a link for the rom you are running? I have one to test controllers but it doesn't have the benchmarking
Or at least a nudge in the right direction?
I'd recommend the 8BitDo Hall-Effect Joystick. I've got two of those and they are incredible. One reads 84 on all axis and the other ranges between 81 and 83. Both are incredibly close to an original controller.
Glad to know since i preordered 2 kits yesterday lol
This is really good to know! I wanted to try out their stick mod, but I couldn't find anyone talking about how it measured compared to an OEM one. Might have to get one soon then.
I just got one installed. Reads 80 on all axis. The original joystick has overshooting issues.
Smooth as butter and very accurate.
Just a tip for anyone regardless of using an emulator or an original N64. You can hold both the L and R triggers then press start to reset the joystick so it’s centered again. Seems to be programmed on the internal chip
I wonder if it's compatible with the Steelsticks64 components. That would be awesome.....
@@NordicDan probably not. I didn't open my analog but I'm pretty sure they are very different inside.
I had already preordered the hall effect joystick itself from the 8bitdo website, great video!
From watching their howto on youtube for this mod, being able to order just the hall effect joystick, and have it work on corded OEM controllers will be amazing. Looking forward to the two I bought to be shipped. Already have the nintendo online N64 controllers so didn't need the entire kit.
They're also releasing a nice looking mechanical keyboard with some specialized I/O ports on the top side for things like their large buttons. Would make for some nice mods like putting those large buttons in a table or something.
The 8bitdo replacement sticks are awesome as well. Hall Effects as well and Bluetooth. Even use it on your Nintendo Switch.
I love your channel, please keep up the awesome work. I've suffered from limp stick syndrome in the past.
That benchmark octagonal gate is more symmetrical and uniform than literally every high-profile third party controller right now. A little sensitive (like every stick replacement, it seems) but a surprisingly great showing from Retro-Bit on this one. As far as Gamecube-style sticks go, this is the one to beat, by far.
I complained about it back in the day. Same with gamecube. Lol.
So did i
I couldn't stand it then or now, either.
Traded in my N64 for a Dreamcast and never looked back
What was ur complaints?
@Rosa_Canina then u were clearly being to hard on them
I ordered 8bitdo wireless N64 controller mod kit,,,but I am keeping the OEM stick. OEM stick is the best. If it's woren out, just replace it with new OEM stick. OEM stick is the best way to play.
Big agree, nothing feels better. No other controller really controls as finely on the system either.
I remember back when the physical deadline would get so large that we’d have to jam our fingers in an awkward position just to get link to move properly forward. The struggle was real!
Like using your index finger to “hook and pull”. But not to be too hard or the stick would pop right out. Good thing it’s still work after popping it back in but those joysticks were so bad after wear.
I received mine yesterday and installed it in a controller that had a replacement stick already.
Compared to my controller with an original stick, this hall effect stick is just crazy amazing how great it is!
Nice vid brother! Didn't even know about this until I saw your vid. Just bought one👍
That was one clean regular octagon. Sold me on this Hall effect tech.
Definitely looks promising, because there's no deadzones as far as I see here, because that was a common issue with the GameCube replacement sticks, so hopefully it's all good to go out the box with games like Goldeneye. If it is, I'm sold!
What a time to be alive. Constant upgrades coming out for our old hardware. Love it
They could have had a very close sensitivity pattern compared to OEM if they used the same physical gating as the original stick instead of a perfect octagon which every other aftermarket seems to do.
@@InvaderTAK1989the only other controller I've seen with the correct gate for n64 is the horipad.
The latest Hyperkin-revision has improved in this regard, they now use a gate with measurements much closer to that of an original stick. Has made me excited to at least try it out.
@@DisneyTLK110 you mean their repairbox sticks? Or one of their actual controllers? Either way I’m interested 👀
@@mattbrabham6351Which is nuts… because the stick gate itself is basically a straight up octagon like any other gamecube-style stick (just dusted mine off to check). But when benchmarking, the results look like a proper N64 “elongated” gate (although way too sensitive lol). Whatever Hori did, everyone else should take note
@@DisneyTLK110which hyperkin product?
YEP, going to try it out.
Sega was way ahead of it's time they used hall efect joysticks on the Sega Saturn 3d gamepad and the Dreamcast controller they also had pressure sensitive triggers
I didn't grow up with the N64 nor the controller, but I have always liked the look of it and want the one for the Switch.
Ohhhhhhh!!! My mom must repair controllers because I found some sort of super lube in her sock drawer.
You should do the test on perfect dark get a better accurate feel
that's awesome !, Can you use them to replace the wireless Switch N64 controllers?
about time someone made a good replacement joystick
I don't get why they insist on using a perfectly uniform octagonal gate, while the original wasn't like that. The newest hyperkin-sticks actually replicate the original gate-measurements much more closely. I don't know whether or not the range is improved as well however.
These third party options always tend to "snap" into the four main directions, like they have too thick deadzones in the + directions, how's this one in that regard? Easy or hard to make a slight turn while running?
Ey you know which Hyperkin controllers have the improved gate measurements? Wanna get some and benchmark em.
This is basically a tribute 64 stick, and that is a great stick. It feels a lot like the Hori Pad mini's stick. If you have your doubts about this, don't. It feels and works very well.
What about Buck bumble tho?
I wonder how this compares to the 8BitDo version that they are releasing with their conversion kit.
Some else did a video comparison of stock vs 8bitdo one and another.. the 8bitdo one wasn't as good from memory or had some quirks.
The N64 remains as one of the most underrated consoles that will never die! Respect to the big N for bringing this one to market! New parts being delivered prove it!
Hyperkin has had N64 controllers with those sticks built in for a while now
We need this for all consoles
Just got mine in and they have severe input delay :/ my test is dash dancing in Smash Bros, pivot smash attacks, and fast fall up airs. And in order to do it, I have to wait half a second before I make the next input or else I won't dash dance, Instead of pivot smashing I'll do either a dash attack the wrong way, or jab the other way, and I won't fast fall up air, I'll fast fall neutral air
Definitely getting one of those, love the N64. Does anyone know where I can get a decent GameCube controller for use with original hardware
I see the ROG Ally on the side. I use it everyday. Best thing I bought this year.
Been working on some content with it, have a few videos planned. I been digging it so far.
Thanks M.L.P
What is that Super Lube tube in the back!?
I just want to know if anyone makes a stick with the same sensitivity as the original. I rebuild stock ones, and I've been mostly happy with them, but a whole new stick would be cool.
For real. All these years, ALL these different controllers released, and not one of them nails the benchmarks.
It wouldn’t even be a big deal if there weren’t so many games with controls designed VERY specifically around the OEM stick’s benchmarks. GoldenEye aiming being way way too sensitive, or a character not running full-speed at one particular diagonal. It’s always something with these third-party options. It drives me nuts!
Where can I find the blue retro adapter as everywhere is out of stock. Thanks
I'm 6'3 and my hands are so big even the Xbox Duke controller felt tiny to me so N64 controller is fine. Love that and the Dreamcast. Even though I got big hands the dam SNES controller still is comfy as well. Gaming today is over complicated. I still play Atari 2600 and have a blast and I'm not old enough to be apart of the OG Atari generation at all. Simple works. That's why I liked the Wii. less buttons again. They cram so many buttons today it takes away what gaming was meant to be about. I always felt the SNES, PS1, DC etc. were best in sense of 6 buttons max. Don't need 15 buttons on a controller
I actually loved the N64 I'm so happy that there are work arounds for it.
Would like to see this for GameCube.
that's the biggest thumb stick I've seen for the n64 controller
yep lol.
Is this a good alternative to the 8bitdo one? (I can’t get the 8bitdo stick) (also, does Buck bumble work it it?)
Bro knew what he was saying…
Will it drop into the new Nintendo Switch version of the N64 controller?
I loved the N64 controller and then the Gamecube one came along and I loved that one too.
He was walking backwards at the end after the stick was released
I'm with you with the N64 controller design, but I think the stick would be an old time best if only Nintendo had used more wear resistant materials. I find it easier than any other stick to have very precise control due to the mechanical resistance, not to mention that stick drift is impossible on these.
FYI: If you want to play Buck Bumble, make sure you don’t upgrade all your controllers with sticks like that. Leave at least one OEM, until you confirm the stick will work with that game, because something about the upgraded sticks makes controlling Buck Bumble impossible (probably something to do with the sensitivity).
Not that I don't believe you User-pd8, but does anyone else wanna chime in with their experience with Hall Effect sticks and Buck Bumble? Because if one game is effected by this stick, I would assume some other N64 game could be affected as well.
I only know of Buck Bumble not liking the upgraded sticks (not Hall Effect sticks, specifically). It has something to do with that game’s controller inputs, not the fault of the sticks. I haven’t played any other games that gave me that problem, but I haven’t tested every game. I also don’t know the brand of stick the shop I took my controller to upgraded it with. They just advertised putting GameCube sticks in N64 controllers. It works fine on most games, as far as I can tell.
Quick Note: I also read Brawler64 controllers have similar sticks to the ones that don’t work with Buck Bumble, but I haven’t personally tested that, yet. I did notice a difference, however, with the inputs of the Brawler64 controller stick and an original stick while doing Break the Targets in Super Smash Bros. It just felt different trying to jump higher. However, again, I haven’t done extensive tests.
Tbh I really like the kitsch bent replacement parts, it's the best compared to all the replacements so far. This def looks interesting tho. Might get a few just out of curiosity. Anyone know where to download that software for testing controllers? I have an everdrive as well
Kitsch-bent parts are very good and very affordable but they’re definitely a “lottery” - I’ve gotten a bunch of them, and the results can vary anywhere from “eh” to damn-near perfect out of the box.
You can dial them in with some further stick-sanding, but it’s still not ideal. An easy, lazy drop-in solution with accurate benchmarks would be ideal, but still a pipedream, apparently. So even if it takes a little elbow grease, Kitsch-Bent is by far the best option from a price-to-performance standpoint.
"Nobody was complaining about it back in the day."
This is absolutely untrue.
Not sure who you hung out with as a kid but my daily N64 friend group (12 or so kids) never complained at all about this great controller until the sticks went limp. Regional preferences maybe?
That was the worst dude back in the day when you got limp stick because you were screwed and just had to deal with it
My guy has been using the same thumbnail for years 😂😂😂😂
Is it the same module as the 8bitdo?
Not bad. I might try it out
I wonder if this would fit & Work with the knock off usb controller?
Wow, another GameCube stick in a N64 controller. They really are trying hard to make anything and everything, except them wireless Dreamcast controllers. 🤣
Or just a wireless N64 controller that's like the original. They have to just keep remaking it. Luckily we got the Switch online controllers now and can pair them with a adapter, but the controllers are being scalped so you'll be lucky to get one.
@@BLOODY__FATALITY I think 8BitDo has a mod kit where you can make your original N64 controller wireless if you open it up. Might be worth looking into if you're into wireless.
The original stick design i found interesting since it's basically a modified ball mouse in how it works. The original controller does hurt my hand after a while though; i have long fingers and big hands so that's not the problem.
I thought the Super Lube was going to be for something else. Phew! Anyway, I destroyed a couple of those meager N64 thumb sticks as a kid.
How do they perform on games like Golden Eye, Turok, etc... remember that these sticks needs to be tested preferably with shooters.
I bought this mod and the analogue has an absurd drift to the right. Is yours like this? I can only play if I set the deadzone to 20%.
Just wish it wasn’t in the GameCube style
Hello. What is that warning under the stick box that say Cancer and Reproductive harm??
Can you even buy a steel stick anywhere today?
No. Guy took the money and ran apparently
Nice Video ! Sub & Big Like ! And love retro games !!
When did chunky become chonky? Even spell check corrects this
This is kind of off topic. I'm trying to add Bluetooth to all my consoles. There's a receiver for nearly all consoles, but if you want to use an OEM controller then you have to mod. Not all controllers have mods. I think the GBros and raphnet are the solution. If you use Nintendo mini NES & SNES plus the GameCube controller then GBos has you covered. Except for N64, unless you use a raphnet N64 to Wii adapter. That's all Nintendo with OEM non-modded controllers. Raphnet should be able to use other consoles with the GBros. In theory, this should work although I don't have any of the items. Could you get an OEM N64 controller to work with the GBros?
How does this compare to 8bitdo version
Not a big fan of GameCube style replacement sticks, but it’s cool that there’s more options.
What the heck is that thing? Why is there a Wii Nunchuck embedded into it?
Mario Party DESTROYS controllers
Which Hall Effect joystick is better? 8bitdo or Retrobit?
8bitdo is extremely faithful to the original, Archades games has a detailed video on it, the gating is faithful, its not overly sensitive.
8BitDo. Just got mine installed and it registers as 80 on all axis, which is PERFECT. The original joysticks had a problem with overshooting and isn’t as smooth due to the flawed design.
Nope, definitely hated that controller back in the day. Best friend 2 houses down had an N64 at launch and that controller always baffled me at how dumb it was.
Yeah so dumb that just about every main stream feature in controllers today comes right back to nintendo
@@deadringer8050 not back to the N64 controller lol. The only thing other controllers took and improved upon from that controller is the joystick. Doesn’t change the fact that the controller itself sucked ass.
Damn! They don’t sell to Canada 🚫🇨🇦
First off, I love your content. THAT BEING SAID, I was 10 when the N64 dropped and the controller was a problem. My best friend got the console in 1996. I played at his house for 2 years before my family could go next gen. The controller is the reason I went is PS1.
I love the N64 controller too!
Nonsense, I was around "back in the day" and TONS of people complained about and made fun of the N64 controller, most especially PlayStation fans.
numbers greater than apprx 85, result in a stick that is too sensitive.
Yup. Overshooting is a serious issue. 80 all around is perfect
I didn’t know a single person who wouldn’t complain about it when we were little.
The controller is booty. For a lot of reasons it still is.
Yet I don’t feel right playing N64 games with any other third party controller. Even the RetroFighters i keep getting just don’t feel right.
I hated the controller back in the day, was literally one of the reasons I avoided the console.
You missed a lot of excellent games and memories ! Best system of the 90s besides PlayStation in my opinion 😂
@spursdynasty7378 Good games were rare on N64. Cool kids had PlayStation
I wouldnt say nobody. Alot of ppl in my area including myself hated that controller and went with playstation instead. To this day i still dont really like that controller.
Lots of lag for me!
I hated that stick. And I grew up with the console.
I was a Sega fan boy back in the day, that N64 abomination didn't grow on me until my adult years... *update: tried to preorder up in 🇨🇦 but a no-go in my my area! Sux
I complained about it back in the day I hated that controller.
I think you need to be a bit more gentle with the analog sticks man, i used mine like hours and hours for years and i never had any problems with the Analog stick. No need to yank it all the time
I can see why someone would like the n64 controller. I just think the gamecube controller is far superior. I played 64 games with both and I keep on coming back to the gamecube controller.
Totally agree. The n64 controller was and is excellent for the games designed with it in mind.
It's like the console was built around Mario 64.
With all due respect, back in the day I hated this controller. Like the Gamecube controller, it was great for certain games, but a disaster for others, especially fighting games.
The N64 is a good controller, especially for the era, and for the games that were yet to be released. One of the issues would probably if not for the most part be the joystick, not being as good as what the analog stick the ps1 later added to their system.
“Dreamcast controller”
I was in my late teens/early 20's when the 64 came out and I'm 44 now, and sorry, but the controller is atrocious. Always has been, always will be.
Looks like Mario snaps into an octagon direction rather than having more true 360 degree directional control of the original N64 stick.
The N64 controller 🎮 was good but I always felt the analog stick could have been better. Look at the Dualshock 2 for the PS2 that's how you do analog sticks.
We're just gonna have to agree to disagree about the N64.
I was complaining about the N64 Controller cause the PS1 controller and the Dual shock controller were just better designed controllers at the time. Now I had a more fun than I could shake a stick at with my N64 but the controller sucked. Gamecube was one button from being perfect.
N64 is great I grew up with the console one of my first controllers and I can say with confidence the n64 controller is the worst designed controller ever 😭😭 they put the memory card on the controller which was dumb, and the 🍆 in the middle of the controller was never necessary and just made the controller unnecessarily large, arcade cabinets was around for years and you want me to believe that was the best joystick they could come up with? How you gonna give a controller rumble dlc😭🤣😭 and if u use it saving becomes a hassle😩 n64 is dead last in the controller tier list. Love the system tho
8:57 looks like it has some snapback or even drift. Horrible.
Ok First. Back the truck up there bud. I am 44 and very clearly remember the N64 days. I love how we have this new narrative told about the console that did not exist back then. First people did complain about the controller. Lots of people. I knew many friends including my self that liked the analog stick. But hated the shape. Also people now a days look at the N64 like it was considered the greatest system of all time. Besides Nintendo games for the most part. Games on the system where meh. And with that controller good luck playing fighting games. Lets not rewrite history. It was an ok console and lack of good games and super expensive game carts is why the system was always 2nd place.
Growed up with the N64 as well...but bro is on crack. The controller was innovative but also flawed in more ways than the analog stick. Sony already had a better shoulder button design on the og PlayStation that made the Z trigger look stupid. The rumble pack also made the controller very awkwardly balanced. The only game that utilized the 3 grip design was Goldeneye/Perfect Dark with the dual weild control scheme because it utilized both analog sticks and felt like you were actually holding 2 guns. But that was a NOVELTY. The GameCube controller improved on the N64 controller in almost every way despite having its own flaws (like the overly small underutilized d-pad)
Yeah that stick is awful.
*CHINESE MADE* * 8//////
15 dollars for a gamecube stick ?
It comes with the bowl and everything, not just a replacement cap
