I think, if I recall, the reason is because big gap relationships are more likely to be traditional marriages with one working spouse and a housewife. Same age couples are more likely to consist of 2 working adults. That extra income tips the balance in favor of same age couples.
We, as a society, only hear about celebrity big gap families, which, distorts our knowledge of gaps in general. The celebrities are of course, rich. However, big gap marriages occur more often in the poor and middle class because those classes are bigger.
Real life Big gap families are more likely to resemble Drew Peterson (a police officer) and his wife... Minus the suspected homicide, of course.
