I think the candle is a symbol for hope in the engtire series. Haliax/Lanre is often depicted with a Candle and Thelu also had one. I think the Black candle symbolizes the loss of hope. Auri is trying to equip Kvite with cape, key and candle. Perhaps because she is preparing him for something.
Knowers and Shapers weren't human. It's unclear what they were but as they predate the fae and the ruach, we can presume that the latter two evolved from Knowers (ruach) and Shapers (fae). How humans fit into this, idk. But there's no clear indication humans can attain anything akin to Knowing and Shaping. Even Elodin is said to know just some small amount of names (can't remember exactly but something like a few dozen or less) and tells Kvothe how few people know more than one name (I believe with one in a thousand being capable of knowing one name). This certainly puts Auri in an interesting light. In the author's note, Rothfuss said that the story is for those interested in alchemy, so I think what Auri does in the Slow Regard is the application of alchemy rather than shaping. Not to say both magics aren't related.
I largely agree, except the last part about Auri just using alchemy. That seemed distinctly different. But shaping and knowing is more akin to a magic classification than a type of person. The Ruach are not predated by Knowers and Shapers, they are them. Iax was a Ruach who was a shaper. Selitos was a Ruach who was a knower or namer. The Ruach who were shapers created the fae, but not all fae are shapers. Also the Ruach seem to be more like mini Gods than people. They’re at least immortals. So I agree they probably are knowers/namers and shapers on a level unattainable by most or all mortal men.
Eh, not sure I am convinced completely that she was a student at the current university or in the way people think of students. I used to think she was Ariel, but my thoughts have shifted a bit over multiple rereads. Personally, I think she might be the Chandrian Alenta. Both are pale, surrounded by blight (the rust and mold in the Underthing), and both move around in silence. She also seemed to be way older than what she presented on the surface, as she knows how the ciridae looks. Lastly, in Latin, anhalitus (etymology of Aleta) means breath/exhale/gasp, while Auri in Greek means breath of fresh air/breeze, which are very close and might be why Elodin reacted the way he did when he heard about Kvoth giving her that name.
Is it just me, or could there be a sinister undertone in Kote/Kvothe telling Aaron "I'll tell you stories nobody will ever hear again"? Because if chronicler publishes the text he's compiling, then all sorts of people will hear the stories he's telling.
Bast is kvothe or was always around perhaps made a deal with child kvothe like he does with children of nowhere.bast has all the items in his room that you would expect kvothe to have
