UCLA's Augmented Reality Sandbox

- The Augmented Reality Sandbox allows students and the public to interact with a miniature landscape, sculpting mountains, valleys, rivers and even volcanoes, with off the shelf readily available parts.
Topographic maps are crucial tools used by geologists, geographers and adventurous hikers. A newly-built apparatus at UCLA makes topographic maps fun and interactive for everyone by projecting them in 3D.
Artists, writers, D&D players: *GIVE IT TO US NOOOOOOOOOOOOOW*
I am waiting for the day where you can play god in one of these, and make a whole world with animals and stuff that you can manipulate. That would be awesome.
Try playing Black and White
@@Murskinator lol I remember, B&W, it was terrible :(
@@SpydersByte Try the universim.
Worldbox but 3d, gotcha
It’s called Minecraft
It is pretty awesome that they have accomplished this in real time.
Amazing! It would be interesting to achieve the opposite, that is: with a map the structure measured in the field materializes in a sand box!
One of the coolest thing i have seen recently
Saw and played with this in the UK at a national park visitor centre a few years ago. It was pretty cool.
This must be a lot of fun to play with!
Might be one near you! They have these augmented reality sandboxes that you can play with at many locations including some libraries, natural history museums, dinosaur museums, science museums, Wonder Works, Adventure Playground, Discovery Place, traveling dinosaur exhibits, science center, aquarium...
this thing is so cool! i wish i had one!
Imagine the lore you could make with this
I could see this being used to enhance play for those with disabilities. it looks like it would be useful in wargaming too.
Today I got to play with this as part of a school trip, it was lit af 👌
Amazing!
Just like Simcity!
This is absolutely incredible! I’d love to fiddle with it some day. ❤️😮
This would be a great way to instantly generate heightmaps for games like Cities Skylines, etc.
that is so neat!
I had to watch for class, so cool
That is amazing!
I played with one of these before it’s so fun 😃
I WANT THIS YESTERDAY!!!
Eight years later, u get it yet?
@@fitlexyt2600 no...😔
It’s been 8 years. Did you get it?
Yet again, 8 years later, ya got it?
I shall be the fourth person to ask. 8 years later, ya got it?
Is this the same setup that's at the Fairmount Water Works in Philly?
This is at my local library :)
This can be very helpful in planning a mega projects like linking of rivers like Ganga-Cauvery linking. Also, this can help in teaching children. That wide open up unknown possibilities. Any technological development would have both destructive and productive potentials. The humanities should choose the purpose.
It would be great to use this solution to create something like Sagarmatha or Denala mountain reliefs.
COSMICK Truly Super...Wow.
I've tried this. It's so fun! It's in givskud zoo in Denmark, in a building about the ice age.
Wonderful idea
THIS IS WHAT I WANT!
it's work with kinect v2 ?
Terraforming :D
Imagine this for Warhammer or other augmented reality RTS games!!!!!!!
I want this in my house so bad. I would playing in this for hours trying to make mountiny and flat landscapes and it would be so mesmerizing to watch. To bad it's very expensive...
@Aviral Tripathi I do not know, I guess like 10,000$ or higher.
@@kalmarunion8166 huh? Your only expense would be a projector, xbox kinect sensor, pc (even intel hd can render this) and thats it. Below $1k or even under $500. And the software is free for windows, linux and macos..
Is it available in market for regular consumers?
You have to build it yourself. My school is building one and it costs around $2500.
@@chuckthebeast7693 do you have the supply requirements ?
@@1Larriva 3d camera (I think an xbox kinect would be the cheapest option), sand, projector, a computer. The hard part is developing the actual algorithm for the terrain generation. You can google "augmented reality sandbox software" but you’d really need a computer scientist or at least a software engineer to help you out with that part.
That would be so good to have. But what would I use it for?
I thought of this back in 1991 when I was in the military. Don't worry, I don't have a patent on it. Is it available preformed according to actual land? Is it available as a hologram projection? Is it available as an app?
ask Proto Makerspace he just told sonmeone else "If you really want to buy it, we can work something out. We can sell the you the hardware, but the software and OS are open source."
NIGGA SHUTCHO
sivadmg
u sure u in da military
i played with one filled with kinetic sand at The National Strong Museum of Play.
The Powder Toy
I want one and I'll have my feet in warm water in the other so I can pretend I'm at the beach in Florida and I don't actually have to be there.
wow ,great
great :-D
The first time I saw this video on Facebook it was really low quality, so I thought the sand was digital as well. Honestly, I kind of would have liked that better, because then I wouldn’t have to worry about sand getting on the floor or under my nails.
+Lukas Sprehn then that would be virtual reality, not augmented reality.
RamesGamesLC Exactly :)
coolest fucking thing i've ever seen
I the chance of playing with this thing at 35c3. It's really fun
Daily Dose Of Internet brought me here.
Aaron Alvarado same

SUPER
Where's the software's download link?
where can i buyw it?!?!?!?!
Hi there, I run a blog and working on an article about the AR Sandbox. Would you be so kind and advise if it's permissible to embed this video to the blog post? Tnx
what else can you do in that?
what is this song tho??
i have this on school
I wanna build my own land mass
All you need is a projector and a smartphone to replicate this
A smartphone will not be powerful enough to run the software.
Siedziałbym przed tym godzinami
DDOI brought me lol
TrueDat *oh yeah yeah*
wow
is there any way to get that software to make better my geography classes here in Mexico????
Isaac Cruz Márquez Benítez hola, un grupo de estudiantes de Geohistoria en la ENES Morelia, hicimos esto, existe una página donde puedes checar todos los pasos de como hacerlo, es del mismo creador del video.
It’s like when you are god and you’re creating a new world.🌎
I saw a video about something like this 3 years ago...
The first and original model was created by UC Davis, as stated in the video. This is not the first device like this to be produced, but it does not make it any less magnificent.
Mitch Garcia Well being that it's a few years old and then trying to showcase it isn't what I consider magnificent.
im so faded
WHERE CAN I BUY IT!!!?!????!!??!?!?!??!???444
You have to build it yourself. They cost around $2500
Daily dose of internet anyone?
the d&d implications...
wow imagine if each grain of sand was rfid, smart sand...
This is "Projection Mapping", not "Augmented Reality".🤷
My kitty will rain po0p on your reality!
:)
Shut up and take my money !!!
This is exactly how God made the earth.
Hello, I work for Reuters and saw this video. It's very nice! We would love to include it on our service with your permission. I'd be very grateful if you could email me at pola.grzanka@thomsonreuters.com. Thank you very much, Pola.
looks like a toy more than research purpose
Nothing new. We have had this for public access in Perth, Western Australia for a number of years now. Don't get me wrong, it is a great educational tool. But it is nothing new
Geous Spark I bet you're really fucking great at parties.
Ive been to parties with him
