Can we be sure M&S Authentic Greek Yoghurt that Greece is not involved with this awful product or is it just Uk cows? I ask because Gov Uk said the following......Bovaer has been authorised for use globally including in the EU, Australia, Canada and the US.
In the EU the additive was authorised according to Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003 on additives for use in animal nutrition in April 2022. Bovaer has more recently been authorised in Canada in January 2024, and in the US in May 2024.... Greece joined the Eu January 81 I think.

I spoke to a local farmer back in the autumn whose son has recently started a job on a farm supplying chickens and eggs to M&S. He said his son was disgusted to learn both meat and eggs are being packaged as 'Free Range' BUT only a handful of chickens are allowed out round the front of the farm. The rest are crowded into big sheds and are 'barn' reared chickens, never allowed out to forage or exercise or get fresh air - so neither product is actually free range!

I am concerned about the cows being given bovaer because it is interfering with their natural digestion. How do we know it isn't making them feel nauseous, for example? They can't tell us. Why don't they try and eliminate some of the other methane sources, like the mines someone mentioned in the comments, which it seems make a far bigger contribution to the total.

In fact global energy monitor declared Abandoned underground coal mines in the European Union that have closed since 2015 could emit an estimated 298 million cubic meters (MCM) of methane per year, equivalent to the amount of potential emissions leaked from the Nordstream pipeline after the 2022 explosion.
Poland is the top emitter of abandoned mine methane (AMM): Its sixteen mines release an estimated 110 MCM of methane annually, nearly 40% of the EU's total AMM. The Czech Republic (90 MCM) and Germany (55 MCM) rank as the second and third largest AMM emitters without mitigation measures.
Without mitigation, just six mines could account for half (152 MCM) of the methane emissions from all EU’s AMM.

North Americans, you are being subjected to this as well: The following is an excerpt from a Valio webpage I found (Valio is a dairy company in Finland). NOTE: THE FOLLOWING PAGE IS FROM APRIL 2022!! ALMOST 3 YEARS THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON!
"Valio and Atria were the first in Finland early this year to test Bovaer®, a feed additive made by the Dutch company DSM. The additive has proved to reduce methane emissions produced by cows by 30 percent. The additive has generated promising results in farm trials in Europe and North America. During the 12-week test period, 400 cows at three different Valio dairy farms received feed containing the Bovaer® additive. Bovaer® recently received permission to be marketed in the EU."

No organic farmer will jeopardize their organic status like that.
Please stop confusing the issue with this fear mongering.

It's bloody ridiculous that all this is hidden under a bunch of codes - and even with them you then have to try and find out whether that particular dairy uses it (not always stragtforward - and live in a shop - pretty much impossible). Sick of things not being labelled properly - and I suspect with this that no one in a position to do so will likely be pushing for it to be labelled properly - despite being well awware of concern.
Personally I'm disgusted they rolled out this "trial" with hardly a word - I was under the impression that the only thing not asked for it's opinion on whether to participate in a trial were things like guniea-pigs and lab rats. If ALL concerned are that convinced this is harmless then perhaps if they want us to ACTUALLY believe them they should start with their own families for a few years and then get back to us.
Perhaps if Muller told Arla that it'd be bye-bye time for them if they screw up and give them Bovaer based milk they'd find (miraculously) that the problem would be no more. If not - source your milk ELSEWHERE - don't make excuses - and if it's safe why the need to "trial" it on people that were never asked for their consent to participate? I don't want to know I have a 4% chance of their stuff having something Bovaer related in/related to it - just STOP buying the bloody stuff that's bovaer related and the problem goes away.
Btw - personally I don't think it's likely a risk - but that's NOT the point - for me it's that Bovaer itself is nothing more than exploiting the climate fears and effectively does NOTHING realistically to help the environment - just make a profit for a bio company that could have produced something useful instead, and raise the prices of related products. I don't like being a guinea-pig either, or have trials pretty much snuck in on us.
