Hey Matt. Long time BBQ’er here. Your fire box looks great but have a suggestion. My family’s smoker, made by an uncle now deceased, had some of the same problems you encountered. We opened the throat for more heat flow. We installed an elevated expanded metal flattened ‘V’ in the bottom of the fire box. Elevated expanded metal so ashes could fall through away from the coals (ash insulates and will choke off the heat) which improves air circulation and to the floor of the box so you can open the door and drag ashes out. Just a thought on improving the fire box. It helped out our fire/ temperature control tremendously.
I've never built one, but I know fire, and I know metal fabrication/welding. I'd recommend the same. I would have probably lined the side walls with fire brick myself, but... in the interest of utility but not being TOO efficient, so far, this is not a bad setup. And he at least knows he can modify it if he needs to.

Great Build! Building up the box with 1" thick fire brick along the 2 sides under the inside side plates (between the plates you installed and the original insides of the box) would give enough insulation for the sides of the box to make the mesh usable as a warming table. Of course not for plastic or flammable serving plates but sufficient for ceramic or metal. I've gotta say this is looking really good!

Matt, It would be easy to cut the dome with good scribe lines transfered from the fire box. Basically, bring the box as close to "in final position" to the dome as you can. Then, use a straight edge flush with the fire box sides and top to scribe the lines onto the dome. This way the cuts would be more accurate, quick, and will fit the unsquare box. I know the work is done already, but I hope this helps with future projects. Love your videos either way!

The diameter and height of the stack will have a pretty big impact on the amount of draft the smoker pulls. I'm still new to building these but I think that you will find the six inch stack will be the icing on the cake to make this much more functional. The guy that built this was definitely in the trial and error phase, and before the internet that's about all we could do. You want to draw the welding fumes away from him, instead of blowing them at him.
Great vid 👍😊
Nice work dude!! Gotta give the box some love... errr, somethin' like that. I was so happy to see you bring in Chud and Yoder, and pick their brains. Both have made me a better smoker. You are well on your way bro.
"I'D SMOKE THAT"!!!💨💨💨
The diameter and height of the stack will have a pretty big impact on the amount of draft the smoker pulls. I'm still new to building these but I think that you will find the six inch stack will be the icing on the cake to make this much more functional. The guy that built this was definitely in the trial and error phase, and before the internet that's about all we could do. Definitely not a bad attempt especially without experts on hand to tell you what works and what doesn't. Happy smoking!
I'm probably going to ask the propane outfit we park our transports at if they'll sell me a few old tank for cheap. They have quite the pile of them.
