  • Congenital heart defects impact so many: infants and children, adult survivors, parents, and practitioners. Nearly 40,000 babies are born with a CHD every year in the U.S., and it is estimated that 3 million Americans are living with CHDs.
In the past two decades, The Children’s Heart Foundation has funded more than $13 million of CHD research and scientific collaborations that have improved longevity and quality of life for individuals living with CHDs in dramatic and life-changing ways. Only with your help we can we advance our critical mission: to save, extend, and improve the lives of all congenital heart defect patients by funding the most promising research to advance the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of CHDs. I was born with a congenital heart defects i am now 40 and have been living with heart failure. Over the years iv had 3 open heart surgeries for my aorta valve. The last sugary was to replace the valve in 2016 I have two bad values. I can feel my self going down every thing I do takes alot out of me. Everything I go to the er they say everything is normal. I can feel my heart straining..the way my rhythm changes from day to day I feel its not much longer. I'm always weak and its not fun but I still keep going no matter what. Because I am young I have to fight for SSI I don't look sick and people don't understand or really see the reality of heart failure in young people. Its a struggle 😪

When I was a baby I had meningitis. It was then that they discovered a hole in my heart affecting all four chambers. Back in the seventies, they had to wait to do surgery because I wasn't big enough. At the age of two and a half, they couldn't wait any longer. I had a second surgery in 1990 at the age of seventeen. I get the comments, but that was years ago? What do you mean you're tired, you need to keep going. Why were your children both high-risk pregnancies? However, thanks to the wonderful doctors at Texas Children's in Dallas I have lived a pretty good life and am nearly fifty. I'm blessed beyond measure.

I have TOF/APV. I have had two open heart surgeries. I suffered a brain injury during my open heart surgery in 2013. I still have really stiff muscles in my legs that causes trouble with walking.
