    In this video I will show two styles of corkers and how to use them. The Portuguese floor corker and the hand corker. The floor corker is from Home Brew Ohio and is model 45-CZ-85-D6BG. The other corker is a ferrari portugese double lever model M6-UB3E-15H1. I am using #9 straight corks.

    After watching you and some of my relatives use the floor corker I just bought one yesterday for myself and can’t wait to use it when my batch is ready for bottling. I have a batch of blueberry wine on the go right now. Thx for the nice demonstration.

    It's too hard on my back to have everything on the floor. My corker is attached to a board, which is then set on a sturdy tool box, 18 inches above the floor. Everything else is up on a table and a workbench. Gotta love that Portuguese-style Corker ... well worth the price! Today I'm bottling another batch of WinExpert Classic Chile Cabernet Sauvignon.

    Um, I don’t recommend the penny trick unless the penny actually fits thru the bottom of the corker exit. Got stuck and almost couldn’t get it out. But the water helped as well as putting bottle on floor so I could get leverage. Ugh. That was a workout!

    I used to just put my carboys in the fridge when they were done and drink from them rather then paying the money for the corker but I decided to upgrade to bottling so I don’t use so much space with the big jugs

    i found out too late that I needed to corker and didn't have time to get one from amazon. But I did have a 3d printer. Printed a basic plug and stick. and used a rubber mallet to pound the cork in, took about 13 minutes to do 12 bottles with the help of my brother. all you really need is a tube, stick, and hammer for emergencies

      Hi just came across your video on bottling. Just wonder can you cork the screw top bottles as well. And if so are they the same corks or a different size

      @@irish1759able no, screw tops aren't made for corking.

    I never knew that a floor corker locked the bottom piece in place as soon as the hand lever was pulled. I have an Italian tabletop corker, where the bottom does not rise or lower, so it has to be adjusted from the top whenever the next bottle is different in height. A real pain.

    Can I use wooden hammer to cork wine bottles as corker are not easily available in India?

    • @TheHomeWinemakingChannel
      @TheHomeWinemakingChannel  3 роки тому

      You could try. It will be difficult to get the corks started since they are a little larger in diameter than the tops of the bottles. Most corker's squeeze the corks as they push them in.

    I have the same corker and also use sulfite on the corks, but am noticing now some rust on the inside of the corker head, I guess because the sulfite is pretty corrosive. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to clean inside there -- do you just spray fresh water in there when done? Thanks

    How do you get the air out from bottle that way?

    • @TheHomeWinemakingChannel
      @TheHomeWinemakingChannel  4 роки тому

      You don't get all the air out unless you sparge with an inert gas like nitrogen or Argon before filling. If you don't bottle sparge, you can rely on your sulfites to scavenge the small bit of oxygen introduced during bottling. You can expect to see about a 10ppm drop in free SO2 from bottling, so normally you would overshoot the sulfite addition by about 10 or 15 ppm to assure that the wine is well protected for the long haul.

    Do you need a machine to do this? Cant you just force it in by hand or no?

    • @TheHomeWinemakingChannel
      @TheHomeWinemakingChannel  5 років тому +2

      Unused corks are a larger diameter than the hole in the wine bottle by about 3/16 inch. The corkers squeeze them while pressing them in. You can push a cork back in from an opened bottle but it would be a miracle to get a fresh cork in by hand

      I use acquamark #9 corks. They seal for many many years, look nice, fit just about all bottles, and cost a fraction of a high grade natural cork.
