How to Imaging and Process M31 In Ha LRGB

- In this video I show to use NINA to imaging The Andromeda Galaxy in LRGB and HA. I also show you how to review your sub and stack them in Pixinsight, as well as a really cool technique of adding in the HA signal into your unstretched red channel to really make this galaxy pop!

Very impressive processing. Thank goodness I spent some time with Bracken's The Deep-Sky Imaging Primer! I really like your videos because I don't feel like I'm being pressured to buy a certain piece of equipment. Indebted to you for this tutorial, I’ve just processed M31 following every step here and ended up with a stunning image, I’ve only gathered about 25% of the data for the final image so I’m now super-stoked for revisiting this project (actually tomorrow as we actually have a clear sky tonight in UK)… fab work Steve, really appreciated 👍🏻

As with others, I very much appreciate what you have shared here Steve! I've struggled to even get out much in 2021, the wildfire smoke is worse than last year! I have recently switched to mono from a OSC mirrorless and I finally have my first LRGB+Ha data set that should work nicely with your video. Once I get the rest of my calibration frames shot I'll dig in and follow along.✌

I am just getting started with astrophotography using a remote telescope through my local astronomical society. I imaged M 42 last year, and used deep sky stacker and photoshop. I purchased Pixinsight as I am hooked. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video, and worked for hours yesterday, watching, rewatching.... You did an excellent job and of providing a great tutorial, knowledge in a thoroughly enjoyable video. Looking forward to a session this Friday... and I feel like I will have a great session because I have some processing knowledge now.

Well....my first year was all photoshop so I got real comfortable with it.
But honestly my first few attempts at pix i was watching other video that had folks accept the stf as the non linear image. When I did the same my images looked awful. I later realized most osc data needs to be manually stretched with the histo trans to keep the bg from blowing out.

I don't know whether it's just the fact that this video is two years old but when I use Weighted Batch Preprocessing I don't use the Add Custom option.
I select the Lights tab and then use Add Lights to select the lights for all four filters and Pixinsight separates them automatically. Same with the Flats.
Excellent video tutorial. Just made the switch to mono after a year of using a modified canon 60d osc and shot images last night for the first time lrgb and Ha of some orion nebula’s as a test. Also looking at nina as a switch from apt so your video was a perfect setup intro and use case for that! May i ask where the source was for the pixelmath formulas? ( yeah I’m an engineer and want to dig a little deeper…lol). Thank you for the video!!

Man some animal approached me and like growled or something at me man me and my mom ran inside and went back out and took it all in for the night and im working towards a goto mount 2k usd and im 16 lol but great and outstanding final image!
Of course you could just set slew and center on and focus on start.
Then it will continue with the next task as soon as it's finished.
No need for any sound ;)
But I agree, it's the first thing I thought was missing when I switched to Nina.
Now I am used to Nina and let it do everything I want.
I only polar align, make sure it's roughly in focus and then start the sequence.
Everything after that is automatic.
Yeah...its funny it took me awhile to trust the play button especially after a couple times hitting play the the generic sequence was still there...ugh.
I'm using anydesk to remote in, so set up, go to the office and look and the guide scope loop until I see good stars, go out and polar align, come back in and hit play.
Honestly though its not the same thril I used to have, but ill pull though 😉

Sequence mode was on loop so goes round each one.
Great Video! One Question- at the range selection i can not really fine adjust it, I can only do 0,0245-0,0247, everything else is white or black. What is the issue?

Great video. Question: I have the 1600mm pro as well, I was told that it
is better to use dark flats instead of bias for this camera. Where would I incorporate the dark flats in the preprocessing? And why did you choose to not use dark flats?
Hey thanks! I've looked at my bias images and processed them in Pixinsight and there is definitely a vertical banding that needs to be averaged out. Ive also tried using dark flats and found very little deference.
Most import things to do to clean up the background are, dithering, flats, darks.....these are in order of importance in my opinion.
Dss has a dark flats choice for averaging if you want to use them instead of bias.

Amazing tutorial!!! i have a question, i have a color camera and i take a session with RGB and a session with Optolong Lextreme.... how can i do my workflow? can i tahe HA by Lextreme session? Thank you
Thanks! Separate your LX data and treat the red channel as Ha. Then use the process in the video to add it to the red data after you separate your color data into each channel.
Would the Omni XLT 150mm Telescope be able to at least capture a glimpse of M31, and possibly other nebulae?
Hey! Yes...the darker the skies the better. Even in my light polluted skies I was able to see the Orion Nebula and M31 and M44.
Its also great for planets depending on the eyepeices you get with it.

Hi mate can I ask when you put your auto focus on loop LRGB do you change focus or just let it run and re focus every 60 minutes. I think that’s what you do. When it comes to Ha how do you focus I struggle focusing my Ha any advice would be appreciated thank you 🙏
Hey Kevin! In an lrgb run I will focus just my luminance then do a loop.
The rgb isn't as crucial to focus as it gets blurred before applying the luminance.
At only 80mm I usually don't loose focus during the night but if I do I might pause and run a manual autofocus on luminance.
As far as Ha try shooting longer focus exposures, like 10 seconds.
If that still doesn't work then dedicate your night to ha and use a Bahtinov mask to focus before running a sequence.

Hello! Isolation Ha with the values 80 and 7 does not give me the same picture as you. The nucleus is very present. Thanks for the video !
Hey Thanks! Try raising the ha value up to isolate more. These values are very data dependent and unique to the signal you have. Ive gone as high as 200 to get the isolation im looking for.

Hey, great video and great result! Only question I have is on the PixelMath equations you used for the Ha. When I put in the expression and drag over to my Ha image, I don't get any change in the image at all. I've tried adjusting the numbers and still no luck. Any advice?

@@jacobtaylor7853 there are 2 expressions 1 to isolate the ha which should create a new image and the other to add it to the red channel which should replace the target image.

Might of missed it but how much Ha data did you take?
When I use the "Isolate Ha" formula ((My_Ha_file*80)-(My_red_file*7))/(80-7) and drop it on my Ha image, I get a new image that is an identical to that of the Ha file, no change. Has anyone run into this issue? I used the exact same numbers, 80 & 7.
Hey...so the 7 is based on the band pass of your ha filter and is very Snr related as I can tell. You'll need to either raise or lower that number until you start to see the red image properly subtracted.
@@enteringintospace4685 Yes, I'm using a Baader 6.5nm f/2 High Speed Ha filter for the Hyperstar. It's odd that I don't see a change in the image. If I drop 80 figure down to 7 or 8 I see a slight change. If I go below, the image essentially turns black.

Hey welcome to the hobby!!
I switched over to Nina because it will perform an automatic multi star autofocus on a time frequency that i can set. So for example I have it set to stop imaging and perform an autofocus every hour. Apt will only do a single star autofocus that you have to initiate and be present for.
As far as filter focus, for lrgb just focus your luminance and run a loop sequence.
When processing you'll end up combining the rgb and blurring it so get a smooth background for the luminance to overlay onto. So rgb focus isn't critical.
As far as ha sii and oiii, you'll need need to adjust focus for each filter.
