Sam and his beautiful wife, Abigail, have been working hand in hand to sell puff puff in Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos state to fend for their family.
The 30-year-old man explained that he had to quit his salary-paying job to focus on the business, and even though there have been challenges, he does not regret that decision.
"I hear people say I sell pure water, these are my houses, but I didn't believe them. Today, I have built my house to lintel level from money I made doing this business," an excited Sam told Legit tv.

I don't get it . What's up with this shame or embarrassment talk. Here in the states hotdog venders make thousands of dollars selling hotdogs on the streets, and they are not looked down upon. There is nothing wrong with selling food on the street. He should definitely do some improvements to his stall. For instance he can get branded umbrellas for each of his stalls. Everyone working can wear branded t-shirts as well. He should also use the name "Sam's Puff Puff", then eventually trademark the name as soon as he can afford to.

Personally, looking into ways to acquire mobile food units/vans ,to start vending fast food and snacks in Africa.
It's part of the colonial mentally that thinks that a person has to be in a so-called learned "white collar" profession to be respected in the community. I'm referring to being something such as a barrister, solicitor, doctor, engineer, lecturer or senior manager etc. etc. This "respect" aspect is endemic in southern/ Eastern Nigerian life.
Entrepenurship does exist in Eastern Nigerian culture through the traditional Igbo Apprenticeship system (please Google), but that is associated with blue collar professions such as sales of industrial and consumer items via wholesale markets. People who work in sectors via the Apprenticeship system (like anywhere else in the world) in general have not attained college or university level education. Therefore, although these individuals are often the engine room of economic generation and wealth creation in their communities, they are often looked down upon in terms of their educational attainment. Being respected within southern Nigerian local familial communities is a huge deal. The questions are what have you achieved in life, ie education, family life, wealth etc. Most importantly what have you put back into your local familial community to build it. There is a great deal of vested interest in this pathway through life and IMHO rightly so.
The lack of support for people getting into Entrepenurial activities is not only specific to a powerhouse of growth such as Nigeria. This is an issue for communities for example in the UK, where although the government acknowledges that it's small and medium sized businesses that create most of the wealth and jobs, there is not enough within the culture and education system to encourage entrepreneurship. The UK also has an unhealthy bias towards pushing people through the University system and, more often than not, these youngsters find themselves unemployed or working in some of the retail or fast food giants as shop assistants.
However, if you're living in a semi-failed governmental state (e.g. Nigeria) a reliance on uncertain a public sector budgtes and explatitive private sector employer salaries, people likely find they are unable to cover living costs. People will be forced to find a "side hustle" to make ends meet (hence the reference to selling body and theft). In this case this inspirational young fellow and his wife reverted to his inherent gifts and skills to move forward.
I am not Nigerian but one thing I learn from y'all is that hustler spirit. You guys never quit and this truly inspire me to get things done. God is with you my brother.

Man l hate working as a private Chef l worked for a very rich family ,man the routine you talking about is like you are in jail .I left and my anger made me to push myself. Open my own Restuarant ,move to USA ,work 2 years ,then open my own kitchen, Restuarant, now looking forward to open my second branch in Austin Downtown USA .Greedy rich people leave them too much bias and rich people don't want to pay their workers across the globe .A rich man can go to a Bar spend thousands in 1 night ,but its hard for him to pay a person who make him eat .My brother God bless you.

That's the reason why it's so hard for a rich person to make it into God's Kingdom. They cannot let go of the money and hoard it instead of blessing others with it.
What I admire in this story is that the guy turns the INSULT from his boss into an OPPORTUNITY, many people would have been crying and weeping over the ill-treatment from the boss years to come.
Dignity in labour needs to be taught in Nigerian schools. As long as it earns you money there is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of..
@Faith Idialu: It is okay for the school to have the dignity of labour in their curriculum but the main starting point of such teaching should be the family and religious houses.
The family and religious leaders have failed in inculcating such value like dignity of labour on the citizens right from their young age, one hear most often these days fake testimonies of making it with little or no effort in churches.

The guy himself said he was hiding his face whenever he sees people he knows. So he said the word shame himself. Having said that, he is doing well at what he does
Yetty MUA sure he said that initially because the society I know will make him feel like a failure since their expectations of success is sitting down in an office (office job) propably underpaid. He then stated that he is now proud of his job; since he has put the statement behind him, why was the interviewer continuously laying emphasis on it, to the extent of assuming that his wife should be ashamed too? At least she never said we was ashamed at anytime?

I have a friend that sold his land, and store and his BMW to go to Thailand, and after 2yrs in Thailand he started begging everyone for money to come back to Nigeria. There Nigerian in Europe that are washing dishes and doing security and they paid close to $10k to go there. Just imagine if they invested that $10k in a business in Nigeria.

It's because as Africans, for some strange reason, we think having a whyt man's kind of job is it. And yet in the West, it does not matter what you do as long as it brings money. Many Nigerians believe in government work that's while many are jobless or into criminal activity, I started like that with my wife in 1999 doing business of selling building materials from one shop to another, walking from morning till night in Cote d'ivoire, I left to London in 2001 and she joined me 2002, there's blessing in husband and wife work together. I really relate to their story. Keep it up.

Lagos state government should also be blame for not encouraging people doing this kind of business Lagos state enforcement agency KAI is the no one enemy of these people they can crumbling their business in a day, I have also been a victim utill I resulted to street hustling... Doing normal business to earn a living yet government will always run after them it take a strong mind to survived in this country.
