Fun fact about the "barrage" Homura is using against Kyubey at the start, it's likely her version of Madoka's Twinkle Arrow. It's never strictly stated, but in Portable and the Canon Ending, Homura is able to use Madoka's Twinkle Arrow (needing an absurd amount of Concentration in Portable to unlock the spell) implying that A. Her bow in the post Canon Ending is a weapon she would always use and B. That Homura and perhaps other Magical girls are able to learn other girls abilities to a limited degree. (In Portable Madoka gets 3 variations of Twinkle Arrow with progressively more power but Homura can only learn the basic.) There us also the potentiality that Homura sticks to man-made weapons because they're more reliable and consume less magic relative to her constant Time Stops
Wow, I find the idea that she could always use Madoka weapon super interesting because to me it had a really different meaning. In the canon ending, she now has Madoka's powers, but to me it was only because Madoka doesn't exist anymore, so her previous wish to re-do her meeting was changed to remembering Madoka, hence gaining all of her past magical girl abilities (as well as her memory-altering habilities that her witch uses on everyone in Rebellion.) But the idea that every girl could learn some abilities from the others is interesting ! And Kyoko "chains" comes from her training with Mami as well so a mix of the two sounds reasonable !
@aloisssssss well no the reason Homura remembers Madoka in the Canon ending is because her magic is space-time magic. She's effectively the "SAME" Homura in every timeline, so this is just a Homura from before Godoka, who remembers the previous timelines
@@tatsumitwi348 well the Wraith Arc manga states the power to remember Madoka to be "another miracle/wish" hence what I was refering, although I guess this explanation could work alone as well without the manga
This anime's a philosophical dream with a dark magical girl touch. Doing one episode at a time's better as you would definitely overwhelm yourself and the audience, haha.
The curtain opening always made me think that the story was presented by Walpurgisnacht in some way, seeing as she uses the same curtain when she appears before Homura. Or maybe it just applied to her labyrinth scene
It took me a really long time to get used to Homura's voice because the only thing I've heard Christina Vee in besides Children of the Whale was when she was playing Morgiana from Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, and the voices are effectively the same. Maybe slightly better in Magi considering the two years she'd been voicing since then. But I still mainly listen to Homura speak and think 'Morgiana'.

one thing i find interesting is that you called the black & white staircase scene walpurgisnacht's labyrinth, even though canonically she is so strong that she doesnt need to exist within one, so he doesn't. thats why she appears like a natural disaster to regular people. though i do agree it wouldnt make sense if that *wasnt* her labyrinth, since shes the only witch active, but i think i do remember a note that walpurgisnacht could absorb other witches. maybe its a side effect of that? havent finished the review yet but wanted to point that out :3 edit: about the way the world is designed, it feels like another shaft production, the monogatari series, where the buildings and scenery are designed more with the emotion of the script in mind rather than a realistic look at a house or something. it helps push the shots too, and makes for interesting cinematography. it could be, in canon, like u said, a way to show the world is slightly off and not really our own. i also really like the theory that all the windows and large reflective areas are representations of madoka looking inward and discovering her true wish, and that a lot of the empty chairs, especially in madoka's room represent all the magical girls that have died before her
When I was first introduced to this show it had just finished. I knew everyone was obsessed with it, but not why, so I went in blind. I think it could also be to tie into madoka magicas recurring theme of love, specifically unrequited love (by love i mean all forms of love not just romantic), obviously sayaka being a big example, homura trying and failing to save madoka (no matter how you read their relationship you have to admit madoka means a lot to her), mami and her loneliness, she has no one to love her and no one to love, and kyoko and her losing her family even tho all she wanted to do was to help, so while it probably is just a surface level joke it still fits

I wasn't there when Madoka first aired and when I did watch it(through Netflix) I had heard that it wasn't quite the regular magical girl show and that it redefined the genre and almost brought it back to popularity and out of the stale mate the genre had been in but I hadn't been spoiled on the full thing I still got the surprise of episode 3 and the truth of magical girls in this world and I'm glad I got to experience it that way. I don't think I've actually ever gone back and rewatched the whole thing in the intended order but I've just felt like this wasn't a show I'd enjoy rewatching at least not on my own but I very much enjoy the amount of analysis and theories and discussion that are out there and it's given me a better understanding of the show as a whole so I think I'd like to watch the show again sometime but I don't know when that would be, the only time I had even an inkling of motivation to rewatch it I decide it wouldn't be a good time to watch something so dark while my mental health was as unstable as it was at the time(which was a very good decision on my part and I got through it on more light hearted anime like isekai restaurant) but sometimes I do wonder if I'll ever find that motivation to rewatch it again. In the mean time I'll enjoy the review from someone else rewatching the show, it'll have to do for now.
I went into the show knowing that something was going to go wrong with it, but I hadn’t known what. I was not expecting what would happen at all (though the terror didn’t really sink in for a while because it only seemed as concerning as Fullmetal Alchemist which I had just watched about a year prior). I ended up thinking that their world was more modern than ours because of the Incubators manipulation in it (like they said in either episode 9, 10, or 11), but that would go along with the whole “world being slightly off” thing! I like the parts where you discuss how the show tries to trick you into thinking about Homura as evil by using shadows around her and by subverting magical girl tropes with her as she tries to kill the cute animal thing, and I never really thought about how she has a similar color scheme to Junko! I also think that maybe Hitomi can end up becoming a magical girl as you suggested because she knew a bit too much at the end of Rebellion and as other people say, the main cast doesn’t yet have a magical girl with a green color scheme. It was a great video and I will be subscribing!
I highly recommend Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight. That show is the only magical girl-esque show that gives me a feel like Madoka does. It’s really worth checking out.
@@thejudgmentalcritter6584 Let’s just say that if you ever lost an occasion in your life, like going somewhere you wanted to go, talking to someone you were interested in..this show will unapologetically throw it all in your face leaving you like a poodle of regret, only to later give some room for hope that you can change from now on. It’s also crazy as f.
Madoka looks like a metaphor of child labor. Kubey sees teenage girls and trick them into working in a coal mine of misery. He promises to pay them but on the long term, it's questionable. This or Urobutcher wants to see suffering.
I still remember back in 2015, I was first introduced to this show by my older sister. She showed me the poster and I asked “Why are you recommending me Sailor Moon?” She talked about how the story was one of the best she’d seen and that she cried at the end, and I just couldn’t believe her. After putting it off for months and running out of anime to watch, I decided to watch this Barbie ripoff. First two episodes I hated, it was girly nonsense that bored me and I was about to drop the show at the 3rd episode when Madoka said she was going to waste her wish on cake. I thought “What a stupid character and what a horrendous show, I’m dropping it after this episode ends.” Then the episode ended… and I’m pretty sure we all know what happened next. 😱
Man I hope I can do a rewatch myself soon. I especially want to see if I can watch it with anyone who hasn’t seen it or knows the twists, cause always having those genuine reactions to them is amazing
Madoka Magica is my all time favorite so I love seeing analysis videos like these 💕 If there’s ever an anime I wish I could experience for the first time again, it’s definitely this one
Honestly this mahou shoujo is equivalent to a mickey mouse creepypasta. It's only shocking to an inmature audience and pretends to be deeper than it actually is, this is just a bunch of little girls suffering for the sake of shock value, the history is nothing more than that. And the "suffering" is not even that creative either.
My girlfriend showed me this show and I didn’t know anything about it except that it was tragic. And oh my god, I loved it. I called that Kube (how is it spelled?) was evil early, and I related hard at that “you slimy bastard” moment
I remember watching this show back in middle school with my sister and her friends. Didn't thought much of it. I thought it was cute and the animation was unique so I didn't stop watching.......... OHHHH BOYYYY!!!!!

Your Homura and Mami intro bit was charmingly hilarious. I'm gonna think about it every time I see Homura.
My favorite anime next to Tatami Galaxy ❤️
I've never heard of that! I'll have to check it out! :D
Love this series, hate all the copycats that came after
Are we also going to get a Rebellion recap review?
100% yes!
@@thejudgmentalcritter6584 Boy is that going to be interesting.
i find it odd that Walpurgisnacht has a labyrinth even though her wiki said she doesn't have one
Wiki's information comes from actual people so they could've gotten it wrong
When a Magical Girl anime gone grimdark:
Dont ya mean grimbark (H.S)
bro you mentioned public headphones as if they didn't happen in real life and now idk what reality is anymore
Madoka looks like a metaphor of child labor. Kubey sees teenage girls and trick them into working in a coal mine of misery. He promises to pay them but on the long term, it's questionable.
This or Urobutcher wants to see suffering.
Madoka Magica is a really potential anime, that has incredible moments, dark moments and funny moments. Well done, Critter. 👍
😱
I REALLY want to get someone I know in discord to do that. She said the show was too cutesy for her. If only she knew. . .
@@cobblegen1204 ask her do give it 3 episodes. And make sure she still think it’s a girly show so episode 3 will punch her harder
Only watched the subbed version of this and the dubbed clips threw me off so hard
Ma fav anime! ^_^
😍✨ 😍✨ 😍✨ 😍✨ 😍✨
