You might want to consider what I raised africans on for decades. Toss a dozen eggs in the blender, one small can of rinsed spinach, half a carrot, several oz. of liver, a couple of shrimp. Blend until fine and uniform. Jell in a teflon skillet on low heat. Spread on a cookie sheet and freeze, cut into squares and put in ziplock bags in the freezer thawing in the tank as you feed. No grains included, just protein and nutrients.

Very informative video . I wanted to know if we circulate fish tank water and hydroponic system without using fertilisers will it not be a good idea. Please advice. Thank you very much. If your answer is received soon we all will subscribe to your channel. We are young students here is Kenya and are trying different ways to avoid chemicals. Abdul from Kenya

Abdul, sorry for the late reply. I think using a hydroponic system which uses the fish waste for plants is a good idea, especially if it's the kind that uses a little bit of natural soil in the roots. Using too much fertilizer especially in a water based system is not a good thing. However, after some period of time you may want to obtain some water test kits to ensure the balance of your ammonia, nitrate and nitrite are good for both the plants and fish. Smaller systems are more susceptible to changes that happen fairly quickly. Larger systems act more as buffers and can handle some volatility/spikes in the water chemistry. Thanks for your comment.

This particular tank is used to start out the tilapia in their early life. I would normally have a couple of these going. As they get older, they can move into a standard 275 g metal frame IBC tote with the top cut off (or rain barrels). IBC totes are around 1 cubic meter, and you can set up several of them side by side since they are square. So, healthy fish from multiple starter tanks could be moved into that larger one over time (and keep some behind to breed). I would say that you can easily get 150 really healthy fish from a tank like this into the tote. However, they say that you could pack 1 per gallon, so in theory, you could try to get 250-260 fish in there, but I feel that's a little too much and it's more than I need. In under a year (maybe within 10 months) they can reach well over a pound (say .5 or .6 kg or so). So, that comes to around 90 kg per cubic meter, although the maximum recommended is around 150 kg per cubic meter, if it's really well oxygenated, with lots of water flow and you have a great filtration system (the other great thing about IBC totes is you can feed the system out the bottom into a filter and pump and then feed it back into the top for extra oxygenation and keep the top open for insects and easy feeding/maintenance. Hope that helps!
