      Huge dilemma for the bike industry and all industries really. How to stand out but not go to the bizarre extreme of the spectrum and alienate the sensibilities of the consumer. Specialized has a track record of f-ing up. Take the Roubaix SL3 in 2012 that Cancella won the Paris Roubaix on. One of the greatest bikes of all time and a bike I own with BSA bottom bracket and rim brakes and friendly geometry. Very compliant but plenty stiff for average rider. Specialized tarted up the new Roubaix which is heavier...and has a future shock which the company hopes will fail at some point so the consumer will have buy 'twice'. Profit. Now disc brake only.
      Look what Specialized did with their new Diverge. With disc brake only, do you really need a Diverge and Roubaix? Of course not. They ruined it with goofy cable like contraption exiting the top tube. Riders hate the bobbing quality of this bike if the rider is stronger in particular with greater pedal forces. Aesthetically its horrid. An albatross.
      And yes of course you are right about the SL8. Specialized will try to tout this ugly change as function and more aero but won't matter at all. There has been aero testing on different bikes including comparing the round tube TCR against the new Madone with spaceship shape and nothing between them at 30mph.
      Marketing. Creating a new niche to sell more bikes at greater profit when the old days were in fact better.
      The public is easily hustled because they have more money than knowledge.
      Look at Specialized returning to BSA on all their bikes after screwing the public with press fit that created an entire aftermarket industry like Praxis and Wheel Mfg.

    Currently riding an SL7 and absolutely love it. I’m hoping this is some marketing genius by Spesh to get people talking about the SL8 and the actual release is far more aesthetically (and aerodynamically…though I’m no engineer) pleasing than the teasers we’ve seen so far! I'm currently riding a 2023 Cervelo S5 with the new Dura Ace 12 speed groupset. I came off a Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL7 and although I loved the bike, it was a 2021 with the older 11 speed Dura Ace and I had a case of "FOMO" for the new 12 speed that came out. I ended up selling the SL7 mid-pandemic for just under what I paid for it and bought the Cervelo S5 when it came out in 2022. I absolutely love the S5, it is a tad heavier than the SL7, but that all goes away once you clip in. The bike is FAST, stiff, and does everything very well. I went to a set of 30mm Conti GP5000 S TR tires and that helps with the compliance on our ROUGH AS "you know what" roads here in Riverside and surrounding areas. The one REALLY cool thing is you'll never cut a steerer tube again with the S5. You want to go up or down on stem height, simply put in or take out a spacer or two.

    came from an SL6, moved to Giant this season, and am riding a TCX and Propel. SL7 always looked great, but we were all expecting a venge, thats what I would have taken money out of my own pocket to buy, I also cant forget the Aethos. Anyways, This "SL8" has the rear end of the SL6 for sure, and definitely the 3T front end... bad. I dont know a ton about flow, but from what I can tell with the fewer chines and less deep cross sections it would appear to be less aero... does this still mean a venge could be coming? They followed the new O2 from factor as the top tube looks really wide, as well as the head tube, creating a larger frontal area, same idea as the 105% tire rule. Not pleased with it... we'll see.

    • @outdoorbros_
      @outdoorbros_  Рік тому

      I was also expecting the Venge- I think it’s time. Here’s a thought- do other bikes have a similar front end, but they’re hidden much better by the fork and bar/stem design? If you look at the S5, it also looks bulky, just hidden with everything going on in front.

    Thanks for the channel and the interesting videos. Just my two cents, recognizing that we know very little about the SL8 at this time, including whether or not this is in fact the SL8, it could be a different custom racing bike. Given the amount of engineering that went into the SL7, and the fact that it is Specialized's top racing bike, IMHO, there is little chance that are any frame changes to the future SL8 that have not been tested and offer either weight or aerodynamic benefits (or both). The team riders will not have aesthetic concerns, they have Win concerns ; ) Also of note: the Cervelo S5, Panerello Dogma, SL7, Venge, and the BMC SLR 01 all position the seat stays below the top tube. This cannot be random. I rarely buy the first model of anything and for that reason alone, prefer SL7.

    I don't know if I believe that first photo, but the Soudal team sporting all of the blue and black bikes really makes you wonder. I'm currently riding an s-works SL6 because of 1.) price and 2.) rim brakes for life! I would've sprung for an SL7 if the pricetag wasn't so wild, and the used ones are coming down in price nowadays. If the photos that we've seen are the new SL8, I will have 0 interest in it... SL6 is perfect, SL7 is perfect, but that new bike does not look quite appealing. • @DEXVD
    @DEXVD Рік тому +1

    I have a 2019 Cervelo R2 (105 rim) I bought used summer 2021 after being told I couldn't get a Tarmac for 2021 (had asked for my dealer to get me a Tarmac SL6 Sport in March 2021), in late 2021 changed to say I wanted a SL7 Expert (when available) as I've progressed in racing (that's been a standing order with my dealer and their Specialized rep who haven't been able to get that either). For 2023 before the launch of the 105 Di2 Tarmac SL7, Specialized Canada said they would only be getting a couple hundred Tarmacs for the whole country this spring/summer, I'm assuming because they and dealers didn't want to be stuck with a bunch of SL6s/SL7s with the release of the SL8. So really, for me its not about the SL8 so much but just increased Tarmac availability that I am hoping will come with the release of the SL8. I would probably prefer the Venge if that were re-released but if I can't get a Tarmac following the SL8 launch I will probably order a Propel. There is nothing wrong with my Cervelo R2 but I don't want to invest in wheels for a rim brake bike and that makes me hesitant to do things like buy carbon bars or carbon seat post or upgraded saddle for it. If I had a disc brake platform, I was confident I would be holding onto for the next 5+ years, I would be a lot more open to making little upgrades and personalizing the bike than I am now.

    It's the how, in this case specialized gave this bike to their team to ride. And looks like it was partially intentional since I don't think you would give your team a brand new bike to just casually ride at a training camp. So to me the closest reason to give it out other than QA/QC which should 100% be done behind closed doors is for filming. Which would give it off as a more casual vibe and not indicative that it is being released soon since they'd still need to edit the footage.

    • @nerigarcia7116
      @nerigarcia7116 Рік тому

      @@NC01 Oh, that's a tough one. I think the SL6 is lighter and more nimble. The power transfer made it accelerate and climb really well. The Team Machine however felt more comfortable for me as I have a short torso. I always used the Tarmac as a barometer for fit on my bikes as it was one of the most comfortable bikes I've owned so I kept going back to them. The Team Machine just fit me that little bit better. It's a little heavier and feels more planted but it can get up and go when you ask it. It handles really well and feels smoother overall. It makes for a good overall bike. You can't really go wrong with either of them but for me, the geometry and clean lines were better with the BMC. If you're concerned with weight I'd probably stay with the SL6. My SL6 had full SRAM Red AXS, hyrdo discs, and came in at 15.9 lbs in a size 49. While my BMC had full Dura Ace Di2, hyrdo discs, and came in at 17 lbs in a size 47. I did have my SL6 setup as my climber but if you were going to have one all-around bike it would probably still be lighter. But I wasn't disappointed with either of them, they're just different. I ended up getting the SL7 later because I wanted the integrated cockpit, but since I can't stop looking at bikes I ended up selling that and getting the BMC, who was maybe the first to integrate everything years ago. So, that's one difference between the two. The SL6 also felt like it skimmed over the road where the BMC seemed like it was more grounded in it, much like a steel frame rides. It's not slow, it just has a different feel, much like a luxury performance car (BMC) opposed to a sports car (SL6). Or to use surfing terms the BMC felt more like a fiberglass foam board very much in the water opposed to an epoxy board which kind of floats on the water like the SL6. Unfortunately, some guy crashed under me and cracked the chainstay on my BMC so I no longer have either of them. 😔

    I have Domane - not the prettiest bike but I like it fine. That SL8 looks awkward and ugly.....I love the look of the aethos but that thing, yiiiiikes.

    It's hideous! Just like the new Madone. Once you've optimized a design to perfection like the SL7 and there's nowhere to go from there, they get gimmicky and over engineer with horrible aesthetics. This bike just looks so unappealing...

      Good points. I think there's inevitably awkward eras in innovation and this might be one of them. Hopefully it looks better in person.

      @@outdoorbros_ agree completely. I thought your speculation about the Venge reintroduction made great sense from a marketing and merchandising standpoint!

      My view of the frame has changed completely and I think they did a great job with this current iteration which appears to be a real improvement. We will see. For now I'm sticking to my Melee and my latest weight weenie Aethos build
