You’ve probably already figured this out by now, but a valve lapper is used for lapping the valves to the valve seats. You use a lapping compound that is gritty put it around the lip of the “new” valve and use the lapping tool against the valve and twist it back and forth to mill the valve lip to the valve seat for a perfect seal when the valve closes.
Yep, and purchasing one was an absolute waste of time since I didn’t replace any of the valves. At the time, I thought it was the tool of choice for “suction cupping” the buckets off the engine, but quickly realized that the tool of choice is a telescoping magnet. 😆
You sir, are one brave son of a biscuit!! Bravo for attempting such a job! 👏👏 Great video can't wait for the rest, also it was nice seeing Evelyn's insides 👀😏🤭😅
@@HalfClickUp oh by the way, don't mean to get ahead of you or anything but since you're all up in Evelyn's guts🤣 are you gonna try and do that timing mod?? I'd be very interested to hear your insight on that mod cuz you keep it real 💯
lopezdad30 I thought about it since already having the necessary components apart, but I was more intent on ensuring that I had the timing correct after reassembly. This being my first time, I didn’t feel comfortable advancing the timing with that mod whilst not knowing for sure if I would have it set correctly after disassembly/reassembly of the cams, etc. The timing mod is still on the table 😉🤙
I remember you gave me a response to this a while back but I don't quite remember the answer. How much would guess all of this cost and how long did it take? I unfortunately haven't been able to rewatch all of your videos again yet. No rest for the wicked and all.
Skip to the 6:03 mark in Part 1 and you’ll see where I show my project spreadsheet, which breaks down all the engine part numbers, tool part numbers, and costs for everything. Total time for the job was three days, but that includes the complications of filming. Now that I’ve done it, I figure that I could go back in and do it in roughly 6 hours if I had to. No filming; just me, the tools, and the bike.
The sooner, the better. The service manual calls for the first valve adjustment at 26k miles, so you’re right at the prime mileage to at least check your clearances. Odds are that you’ll find em all within spec, but you won’t know until you crack it open and measure.
This is the greatest video on yt rn
Thank you for the kind words, I hope this video series proves helpful for you and your project!

Hey half click, do you have a video on changing the spark plugs?
Man oddly enough, that’s one of the only maintenance tutorials I’ve never done. Have you run into a snag?

Yeah what size shim kit did you use I'm struggling to find the exact kit you had. Thanks so much man! 7.38mm?
