My Uncle, Neil David Menzies passed away on 8-17-19. He was the creator
of these videos. He would tell me stories of his tour in Germany. Even
though he would sometimes tell the same stories over again, I will miss
this greatly. I am proud of his service and I will always have fond
    memories of my Uncle Neil.

I knew your uncle Neil. He was a kind hearted and good man. His sister Heather was a good friend of mine and often wore his army jacket when we went camping. I remember Heather telling me when he returned to the Berlin Wall. I miss them both. His service is appreciated.

Thank you for the pictures. I was there from 1968 to 1970 and a clerk in the SJA (staff Judge Advocate) office I lived with others in the attic of the second building on the right. We were all in the same office. Great memories

Jack Miller I arrived B Company, 8th S&T, in Nov. 1964. I was there until my enlistment ended Oct 1966. I was a wheeled vehicle mechanic so worked in the motor pool. Also drove one of the 2 wreckers. Great place to serve. Tipped many beers in the Felsenkeller myself and still have an ashtray from there as a souvenir. I visited BK in 1998 and Des Gouttes had been abandoned by US Army by then and several German companies were using it. The gate was gone so I could walk all around. All the same buildings as when I was there. Rose Barracks was still US Army but no longer 8th Infantry. I was allowed in after showing my US passport and enjoyed walking around.

Enjoyed these pictures. We were there 62-65. My Dad was Sgt Maj William Lackey. We lived at 5633 A-1. I remember a lot of good times there as a young kid. If you are one of the MPs that dropped me off without reporting me to my Dad, thank you.

I was stationed with the 8th Admin Co at the Rose Barracks in BK Nov 68 to Mar 70. I was a division in -processing clerk and later on, a records clerk. These photos really brought back some fond memories of work and play in Germany.

Terrific photos! Great memories of those days. During the same time (Feb 1966 - Dec 1967) I was in Service Battery, 4th Bn, 41st Artillery at Hardt Kaserne in Schwäbisch Gmünd. I had a camera, but thought taking photos was corny. Many years later I wish I would have shot dozens of films.

Here now in November of 2018.. Not much left of Ross Barracks.. I was stationed just a short walk away at Des Gouttes Kaserne in 67/68. That is all gone now.. I believe it had a least one new name after I left. Great Video!

Really enjoyed this video. Battery B, 264th FA Bn, 7th Army Des Gottes Kaserne, 1954-1957. Great memories of Rudesheim, Bad Munster, and the Rhine River. I've been back to BK several times and watched our beloved kaserne got thru the demolition and now a big store. Were we ever that young?

Took me a while to figure out where the Des Gouttes Kaserne was located at. When I was there in 1986 to '89 it was known as the Minick Kaserne.
I worked in POL at the Air Field.

For quite a long time after I arrived in 65 there was a hole in the fence behind the motor pool which we used on a regular basis to avoid Louis and his fellow MP's at the front gate late at night. It was a sad day when that other entrance was found and shut down.

I had a large album from Germany but it wouldn't fit in my Duffel Bag so I had to put it on my foot locker for "hole baggage". I never received it. All I have is one undamaged picture taken in A Co. dayroom on inspection day and a few others around the Kaserne & 1 in Zaragossa, Spain after a 2 week Airborne training exercise but there is some damage to them. I had mailed them home and they receive very good treatment.

I don't think we can know for sure, but my father is about 99% sure that the man in the white hat in the first picture is him. He was stationed at this base during those years, and that's roughly his body type and such. I like to think it is anyway.

If you were really lucky you didn't fly. You ended up on that old troop transport the USNS Maurice Rose that sailed out of New York to Bremerhaven. During February 1965 it was 8 days of a roller coaster ride across the wild Atlantic. I have never seen so many sick people in one place.

@hanothekidd It mades me kinda sad, when they started pulling all down. U know, i got a lot of good memorys about the old times.Spended a lot of time in the housing, had a few friends there, that was during the late 80s till the mid 90s. I was a kid in that time and loved the american way of life. The Airfield isnt anymore too, just the place on the Kuhberg is still like it was, with the Baseballfield, the BBQ area and stuff.

  • @Ritalinkopp
    @Ritalinkopp 12 років тому +1

@hanothekidd Right, the Kuhberg is a place on top of the hill near the forest. I dont know if there even was a baseballfield and the BBQ Area 41 years ago. The Army did their manouvres there. In the town where the military hospital, two other bases and a small airfield where the some Hueys was based. I think BK wasnt the baddest place for US Soldiers, the most loved this small city and some stayed over here after they finished serving. Where did u go out in free time?
