2022 and this still makes me cry. I didn't think it was possible for me to cry anymore but somehow this still does it. I distinctly remember this being one of the favorite cds I ever purchased. Hurt is really something else. And I agree, Overdose is good too but tbh... I like dense russe lol. Very different than the rest of the songs on here but I find it refreshing and just nice.
I was always too bored to listen this song all the way to the ending of the rain part... When I heard the music at the ending, I almost got a heart attack from a surprise... And it's so beautiful
According to Hurt's forums, there are MANY interpretations of this song, yet NONE have been verified....Some reference the poem you mention....The lead singer has said it is from the old Celtic folk song "The House Carpenter". Which ever you prefer to believe, or if you have your own interpretation, one thing remains.....It is an amazing song.
To me It's about grieving, and their loved one going home, with Jesus. Jesus was a carpenter. The one grieving feels he could never love and take care of them, or her, as Jesus could. He feels unworthy, and feels he would never make it to heaven, and never see her again. Beautiful song! Not sure how I overlooked this one. Instantly a favorite of all time.
I know this is a bit of a late response, but yeah I completely agree. I fell asleep with this song on repeat and woke up to that line and it freaked the hell out of me.
@That one guy , absolutely, one man's nightmare could be another man fantasy. I personally have found Hurt to be very soothing and the most thought provoking and emotionally riveting band I've heard. Some people do see beautiful darkness I guess simone Of them.
How is this band not more famous than Justin Bieber? When i heard them a few years ago i was sure they'd become the standard in Rock and Roll yet they seem to have faded into obscurity and every song off of there first 2 albums is genious there 3rd album is not bad.
HURT got me through my teenage years. I've supported them every step of the way but really..the truth is they have supported ME. Their music has got me through inexplicable lows. There is nothing else like it J Loren is a genius.
This song is about his mum being a religious fanatical and totally ignoring him during his youth. She would not let him even create music stating it was evil. The married to a house carpenter is a reference to Jesus.
@free2breathe Actually I think that the song isn't actually about the Daemon Lover but a reference to it, since The vocalist (I believe) had a lover that died. He's referencing the story because it was as you said the devil that came back for her so his symbolic counterpart would be the house carpenter she leaves in the story. That being said he more or less is saying his lover is in heaven in contrast to the story. The rest of the lyrics also show the person in question was important to him.
Im pretty sure it was just his baby that was killed right? I thought his wife just left him after, for another guy thats what i kind of thought was his reason for this song😕
every single one of Hurt's songs show true beauty and pashion for their music and fans. Katy Perry maybe whats "popular" now but her songs have no genuine impact on your mind whatsoever except for a catchy tune. Hurt's music leaves it's mark on your mind, your heart and your soul and for that reason Hurt will be far superior to most music.
I grew up listening to Hurt. (I’m 19) My dad loves this band! I found this song on my own, after coming back to this band from nostalgia. I cannot stop listening to this song! Severely underrated!
amazing song you dont hear songs like this anymore.. great song to hear when you drunk and you been smoking some good ass herb.. lil coke... thinking about your past.. thinking about the girl that broke your heart all the ones after her that you did wrong all because you were in pain but could never show it.
Peter Ful ...just curious..how did HURT help the hurt you dealt with??not making a laughing matter..sir...cuz I've had a glimpse of death...i couldn't have made it without music...peace...happy 4th of July 2018...
Are you fucking KIDDING ME?? VOL 1 AND 2 SAVED MY LIFE! It allowed me to cry.... ALOT! and said the things for me I could not say myself. THANK YOU. I MADE IT THRU... I will always love them for it!
Its not interpretations actual lyrics from this song are in the poem . So it is based on that poem with hurts twists but same story different storyteller
One of my favourite songs... And there's a different interpretation for every one. That's what I love about Hurt... It doesn't seem like the average, run of the mill, mindless-lyric "music". Music is a universal language! And I absolutely adore these guys.
This is favorite hurt song, I own every cd. Overdose, wars, and when its cold are also awesome. Though they are all pretty awesome now that I think about it.
I hate it and the people who label and relate every single thing to their religion just to make themselves feel better. Love the song, will definitely buy the album.
100% correct. there are some people who still have brains, thank god lol. i have no idea how anyone could this is a about a break-up. people are far too stupid to get the message when it is absurdly obvious for fuck sake, therefore , those people are NOT getting the intended message the band was trying to send out. disrespectful in my opinion. especially when they make THIS obvious.
@OHmygodXoBil3 The "arbitrary" and unconventional song design (e.g. verse|verse|chorus|verse|bridge|chorus|chorus) is what gives that impression. It takes a good musician to create a song using unique structure and keep it form sounding like a blob. Tool and Hurt are two bands that pull this off beautifully. I can't say either way that Hurt was influenced in such a way by Tool just because this style requires massive amount of originality and doesn't "follow" Tool's style/structure.
How weird, I was just randomly perusing the comments when I saw this. That was me, I came up with that combo a few years back and posted it on another version of this video which has since been taken down for copyright infringement.
My interpretation of this song is: In the bible, Jesus was a house carpenter. Christians are told to put there love of god before that of their spouse, and so essentially its him morning the idea of not being first in love.
"Hurt arent even my faveorite band, but it would be pretty insane to believe that they are not the most musically, and lyrically talented musicians to ever release music." uwotm8.jpg
fuckin' A... i'll agree with that. i definitely feel that Hurt should be involved in any elite percentile should it legitimetly contain notable mentions, but also agree that style needeth be dynamic. Epic talent, how ya' doing? Mr. Loren's linguistic range is unrivaled with adequite symphony to support it
ok really stop guessing what the lyrics are about this is House Carpenter originally a poem called the Daemon Lover that is a british poem from 1912 lots of ppl have made songs about this poem Its about satan not jesus. He comes to get his former lover its just a coincadence about the carpenter part
Joe Wallace I know that, but it's just melody and I could do without it. Either, remove the silence and keep the melody shortening the entire song, or just stop the song at 6:47. I'm gonna have to edit this track before I add it to any playlists now, I don't know who started telling bands silence is music, but they're an idiot or massive troll.
Hrel Sometimes long pauses are put in for dramatic effect, playing what appears to be a full song, long pause and just punch you in the gut right afterwards when you're guard is down. Clearly you are just impatient, that is no fault of the artist, just your personal preference. (none of that was meant as an insult, so I apologize if it is taken the wrong way).
+Hrel Maybe you're hard of hearing or your volume is down too low, but that's the sound of rain, not the sound of silence, not to be mistaken with the Art & Garfunkel song.
have you ever listened to 10 years? their singer could fill in for Maynard if he was sick or injured. chevelle is good but that dude couldn't sing any tool song.
hmmmm i know nothing personal about this band, but i figured that out from the text of this song and others on the album, it was pretty much obvious after i looked up the definition of rapture, i wasn't raised christian and never wanted to convert but i knew jesus was a carpenter and i know the singer writes about the concept.
no nickel creek's song isnt the same though they have same name. this song is about jesus. jesus was a carpenter read a bit in the bible he only traveled the last 3 yrs of his life
To most music? I like them, they're not superior, they are unique and euqally as good as any other band I like.... if you play or make songs for money and money only then that's not true music... however if you do it for music and music alone then that's true art.
Maybe you figured this out in the 3 years since posting this but you can right click the video and click loop; if it doesn't show up, right click twice. Been a feature since about 2012 iirc. Unless you mean on mobile, then I'm not sure.
One of my many favorite songs from HURT. I always listen to this song back to back because it makes me think. Its a powerful song and I cant believe many never heard it or heard of the band...
my top fav bands of all time #1 Nirvana #2 Alice in chains # 3 Cold #4 Hurt #5 Pantera! best bands with great music long live, the 2 living bands rr the only good rock left on my opinion rock sucks cuz its not what its used 2 b i mean katie peery!!??wtf!!! cummon what happend 2 pink floyed zeplen hendrix man guns n roses n my top 5 those are the list of great musicians n music now everything sucks downgraded even rap is not good 2pac mac dre eazy etc these were true rappers.
11 years on and I can't say I agree. Mainstream rap has definitely gone downhill as most of the greats died young, but hip hop has arguably the best indie scene of any genre. On the other hand I love classic rock and Led Zeppelin is one of my all-time favourite bands, but it's hard to say that music has really gone downhill. Pop music has mostly been bad since pop music has been a thing, and that's been since the late 60s, but there's still plenty of good music being made today. Perhaps you just need to look farther afield than what's on the radio.
2021 and this song no matter how many times it plays still gives me chills ... Such a hugely underated band
I seen them in a bar back in 2008.
Very talented band, can't believe how underrated they are
You're not lying
2022 and this still makes me cry. I didn't think it was possible for me to cry anymore but somehow this still does it. I distinctly remember this being one of the favorite cds I ever purchased. This song is fucking addictive. Such a beautiful song. The world needs more songs like this.
Still listening in August 2021
I was always too bored to listen this song all the way to the ending of the rain part...
When I heard the music at the ending, I almost got a heart attack from a surprise...
And it's so beautiful
this emotion you feel when they sing is pure creativity. Not the image popular icons try to portray. It is the gift of life itself... creativity
perfectly said

That female's filtered "I love you so much" line at the end is unsettling for some reason.
I know this is a bit of a late response, but yeah I completely agree. I fell asleep with this song on repeat and woke up to that line and it freaked the hell out of me.
Gregory Ayres RIGHT?? Same thing happened to me.
+Kolby Kauffman Also in Unkind. Very nice touch.
@That one guy , absolutely, one man's nightmare could be another man fantasy. I personally have found Hurt to be very soothing and the most thought provoking and emotionally riveting band I've heard. Some people do see beautiful darkness I guess simone Of them.
She must have felt something really painful...so hurtful it started a movement...I 🤔 think maybe a summer’s lost at an Old Mission in the rain...?
How is this band not more famous than Justin Bieber? When i heard them a few years ago i was sure they'd become the standard in Rock and Roll yet they seem to have faded into obscurity and every song off of there first 2 albums is genious there 3rd album is not bad.
I always thought it was about a man in love with a nun or female who found Christ. Loved this song since...long time
HURT got me through my teenage years. I've supported them every step of the way but really..the truth is they have supported ME. Their music has got me through inexplicable lows. There is nothing else like it J Loren is a genius.
if you're not breathing why am i?
Hurt and Tool... the smartest bands ive ever known...
Plus Lindsey Sterling,Evanescence,Godsmack,Lillix,Kesha ,Avril lavigne,Katy perry,Shakira,Demon hunter, sorry manys others tongue tied.
Not as well known as tool but should very well should be. Great view bud. That's spot on
its alone in this ship not shit.
The best moment of my life - listening this song and reading old comments.
This is one of the best damn songs ever written!!!!
There are no words to describe the beauty of this song...
I love the way this song is so deep. 10/10.
Best band one of 2019 still
Favorite Hurt song. Too bad they didn't play on the last tour :(
This song is about his mum being a religious fanatical and totally ignoring him during his youth. She would not let him even create music stating it was evil. The married to a house carpenter is a reference to Jesus.

Katy Perry and hurt should sing this together an remake and everything falls apart
I grew up listening to Hurt. (I’m 19) My dad loves this band! I found this song on my own, after coming back to this band from nostalgia. I cannot stop listening to this song! Severely underrated!
WTF? They're not even close to tool. Vocally the closest to tool would be the band inspired by them, Chevelle.
amazing song you dont hear songs like this anymore.. great song to hear when you drunk and you been smoking some good ass herb.. lil coke... thinking about your past.. thinking about the girl that broke your heart all the ones after her that you did wrong all because you were in pain but could never show it.
Sloan Householder A year late. But I just gotta say, whatever ass herbs are, they don't sound too good, to me.
Yeah, and besides, there's plenty of good songs today.
you sound like me when drunk. lol. awesome post
Was broken up with a little over 3 weeks ago. This song is perfect for that. To hell with bitches!
To hell with bitches lol
This song helped save my life.
~aaliyah~
Peter Ful ...just curious..how did HURT help the hurt you dealt with??not making a laughing matter..sir...cuz I've had a glimpse of death...i couldn't have made it without music...peace...happy 4th of July 2018...

Thankyou 🤘💓🤘
The eye in the photo reminds me of tool a lot.
I bet english arent your favorite subject either.
One of the most underrated rock bands there very good
I hate it and the people who label and relate every single thing to their religion just to make themselves feel better. Love the song, will definitely buy the album.
Jesus is the house carpenter... She didn't leave him, she died.
The riff reminds me Death Note for some reason.
@OHmygodXoBil3

btw this song is written about one of J Loren Friends who committed suicide
I played this at my little brothers funeral after he died of an overdose
I heard you're married to a house carpenter, and your love will never be mine
Hate breathing this worlds air
I forget who recommended playing this with rainymood, but that was the only time I have added something to a song and been pleased with the result.
How weird, I was just randomly perusing the comments when I saw this. That was me, I came up with that combo a few years back and posted it on another version of this video which has since been taken down for copyright infringement.

Powerful :D

Epic talent, how ya' doing? Mr. Loren's linguistic range is unrivaled with adequite symphony to support it
how does change his voice at the end it's so cool XD
if your the sad and lonely person who said you disliked this. i pray for you, i really dont aye, this song friken rocks too much!!!!
Pure fucking heartbreak. Amazing channeling of emotions through music.
@ZanxKrogian don't forget the first part! "All of the pain and the way it was....all of the shame and the hate because.."
The guitar sounds a lot like 'The Flight of Dragons' movie theme song
ok really stop guessing what the lyrics are about this is House Carpenter originally a poem called the Daemon Lover that is a british poem from 1912 lots of ppl have made songs about this poem Its about satan not jesus. He comes to get his former lover its just a coincadence about the carpenter part
Thing songs brings back so many memories, some happy others not so much. But what a brilliant song.
Why does everyone compare tool with hurt. They are both good bands
I want to learn this song so bad on guitar
fargo housing torturing innocentchildlike adult heart of pure heavens of past Gold. RIP Son Omega.
when I Cease too his handsome 100% perfect above all and everyone and thing created.
Like ten years later, who's here because of the /x/ soundtrack?
Holy SHIT do I wish there was a way to stop the video at 6:47 and have it repeat. Fucking 3 MINUTES of nothing, very frustrating.
The reason it continues is that there is more to the song....if you want to skip the silence, just jump to 8:29
Joe Wallace I know that, but it's just melody and I could do without it. Either, remove the silence and keep the melody shortening the entire song, or just stop the song at 6:47. Beautiful Song.

Loved this song in concert, they opened up for Filter and they truly are inspired by Tool
Or Living Syndication.
does anyone here know about kryon?
Such a powerfully moving song...
hmmmm i know nothing personal about this band, but i figured that out from the text of this song and others on the album, it was pretty much obvious after i looked up the definition of rapture, i wasn't raised christian and never wanted to convert but i knew jesus was a carpenter and i know the singer writes about the concept.

UA-cam needs a fucking repeat button.

Try "Very".
@anthonyergo
Yeah, honestly the really good bands are barely ever recognized, which sucks about music today :|

they are close but 10 Years is the closest band to TooL, besides APC of course.
Again in 2024!!!
I love you so much…
Absolutely magical. This inspires me a lot and makes me ponder about my life. New album "The Crux" this summer!
For every person there is a ridiculous looking fish, waiting in the ocean, just to make you smile.
Its really easy, and so good. This is actually the youtube vid I played to keep along with .Give it a go , :0
:)
I can't say easily after their newest album but it is a damn good song and probably my favorite as well
dedicated to Gizmo
i love the whole song,so much feeling to it and the guitar in the beginning was great as well.
