Paul, too? I read an interview where George Harrison said that - or that it was his favorite melody - ( I may be mistaken - he may have said that about 'Don't worry baby').... I'm surprised Macca didn't choose a Buddy Holly tune. I think we've been spoon-fed this beatle lore stuff by the Fabs themselves, because having lore adds to credibility and superstar status. ever heard the one where Paul said that Yesterday came to him all at once in a dream presented by his mom - it just fell out on him? - and that he had to ask and search all over to be sure it wasn't already someone's song? Well I saw Paul on TV with John saying it came in drips and drabs and was originally called scrambled eggs..."but wait" you may be thinking - "that was the abbey road medley, right?" (...well that's what you said about that a few years later, Paul)...." yeah it was all this mish mosh of disconnected melodies and words and it became 'I read the news today oh boy...woke up, fell out of bed...found my way upstairs and had a smoke' ...etc..." So it seems the laugh is probably on us - they were just having us on - their songs, hairstyles, look and public personae weren't the only things that were cleverly crafted... THAT is , perhaps, the Beatles' real genius; the greatest marketing machine known to man. there are those who say others penned their songs for them. I say, 'probably' - they weren't just a band but something like a government secret weapon - and organiztion... a mind and social control operation. I say 'maybe- could be'

I didn’t think anyone could touch Carl’s version but Brian did it without breaking a sweat. What a talent.
I can't believe I think this is better than the original. It's so subtly different, but every bit as perfect as the original.

Originally....way back when...Brian sang lead on it. Don't know the particulars, but they went with Carl...I loved both.

So true. Sometimes we forget: It's Brian Wilson, by God, He makes his own rules. It's incredible he's still with us, Because God is a jealous God and sure seems that that level of talent is fleeting.

Listening to music in the 60's I took songs like this for granted. Now at 74 and looking back I see that people like Brian Wilson were musical geniuses. Thank you Brian Wilson and all artists for the fantastic music.
There was a lot of music I took for granted in the 60s and 70s, but I have to say, this one has been one of my favorites for 57 (!) years. 🙂

I attended a Brian Wilson concert about 12 years ago and following the concert he sold items like cd’s and hats. I bought a blue baseball cap that he signed. It is one of my most cherished possessions-and after he signed it, I told him thank you for helping to define my teenage years. Superb memory for me!

Pet Sounds is regarded as one of if not the seminal record of the last 100 years. Mozart is timeless and so is The Beach Boys

I respect him, but aside from the Requiem and some very concrete pieces I really don't enjoy his music very much. Haydn is by far more interesting for me, that's all, and I'm aware that this is only a subjective perception.

I learned the French Horn in middleschool. Everyone was kind of unimpressed with it until the day I played the opening of this song, this perfect, beautiful song. I got a standing O from my class! This is my #1 favorite song, ever! Brian Wilson is genious. Thanks man

Brian spends part of his year here in Hawaii. Rides the city bus like the rest of us locals to go shopping, etc. Glad to see this genius of music hasn't lost the common touch. No limousine. Nobody really recognize him only some of the bus drivers maybe chat with Brian.
If i saw him i would just say hello and carry on walking. Famous people should be treated the same way as non famous people.
It is cool that he makes no fuss on the bus.

I know now a days live, Brian doesn't have that perfect pitch sound to his voice. Which is understandable given his age now. But when he's in studio, in a relaxed setting. At his age, he still sounds like the Brian of old. Even if he does have some pitch correct. Who cares. Having that style of voice when you're in your 70's is pretty dam hard. He still has one of the best voices in music by far...
He's always been better in the studio and enjoys it more too. Touring really takes it out of him.
No autotune there - just some auto double tracking on the vocal.

I saw him live once and he was doing the falsetto which is impressive for his age. Everything with his voice was perfect.

Seriously, he's almost 80 (6/20/22). I was moved this time as much as when I heard this song 50 years ago. He still sounds smooth and it's one of the great songs of the last 60 years. I can't believe a man of his age can still sing like that. Beautiful.

I was 18 years in 1966 and it was then a great song. Now 50 years later it is even more beautiful than in 1966. The beauty, depth and simplicity is really amazing. A masterpiece!

Grew up in the 50s and early 60s lived down the street from the Wilsons on Felton Avenue in Hawthorne Calif occasionally they would play at our High School dances in the early 60s. We all would wear Pendletons because of them

Somehow, the fact that Brian's aged into his 70s and him singing this really HITS you. I mean, more than the original. It's like it's more effective when someone still remembers and performs his own creations. It's such a remarkable thing to see.

Let's not forget that Carl did the original album version. He also did lead vocal live for this. Both versions are BB masterpieces. Brian would write these knowing what would be their best sound. Been listening for 50 years. Just gets better.

The most underrated person in the world, not only changing music forever but making an album that should be consider more than music, there's a special feel to pet sounds that no other album has ever come close to, probably drugs, but jokes aside, if I had to shake that man's hand who changed my world, I would break down in tears honestly, you're the best musician and most amazing person Brian Wilson, I inspire just to get near a album like pet sounds, thank you. I almost find it hard to listen through god only knows, it's just so full of emotion that I can't explain how it feels. Almost like a hot humid summers night walking down a newly built tarmac road in a small residential area, it's just such a unique feeling, it's honestly mind boggling.

I hear Brian's not doing so well health-wise. That is sad. I'm glad he got to do this. Really great version of a strangely compelling melody. That lyric 'what good would living do me' hits me every time.
This is right up there with the greatest classics. Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, Claude Debussy.

I think he wrote it with Carl's voice in mind. It was a breakthrough for Carl since it was his first major lead vocal.

Actually I thought the same thing that Carl voice is better for it. So I went back and listened to the vocals of Carl singing. And on the particular vocal that are heard him saying I actually like Brian's vocal better. I don't know what age you was when he did this vocal here. But I think you did great. I got to hang out with Brian Wilson from time to time, but I never met Carl because he passed before I had a chance to meet him

I about 15 feet away from Carl when he sang this a month or so before his passing. HE NAILED IT!!! The band was in awe, and did the "Im not worthy bow". Carl didn't see the band...but he saw me and leaned down to say thank you.

Brian Wilson... His music, singing, arrangements etc... Beauty, soul, heart and pure joy. He has had a difficult life, not a surprise for a musical genius. I find him a strong man. Many people would not have been able to go what he went through. It says something when you are hard pressed to find a song that you don't care for from an artist. For over 53 years of my life the Wilsons have brought something to my life that defies a satisfactory description. I wish I could thank them for the joy, love, appreciation of great music and tears. Brian, Carl and Dennis also have a way of bringing tears out of my soul because of the soul that came out of them. Keep on singing Brian, you still sound great. 💖 God bless you.
