Best jrpg channel on youtube! 👍
Thanks, buddy.
Agreed. Professor Erick is droppin JRPG knowledge with a whole lot of style and enthusiasm
SEGA and Camelot are my favorites. Panzer Dragoon Saga, Sakura Wars 1 - 4, Dragon Force, Skies of Arcadia, Phantasy Star Series, Shining Force series, Shining The Holy Ark & Golden Sun.
Sakura wars
Squaresoft from the 90s were incredible I cant say I loved every game (I played) they made from this era but the quality was incredibly high. I dont think it would be incorrect for me personally to say that if it was not for them I likely would have continued to ignore RPGs to this day because my previous experiences with them were underwhelming for me. They managed to change that by making my favourite game of all time in a genre I traditionally despised and make me think about what I want from a game and remind me to challenge my own preconceptions from time to time which is why even now I will occasionally take a chance on something I dont think I will enjoy but find interesting. Usually I find I am correct in my assumptions but the rare times I have been wrong have lead to some of the most memorable moments in my gaming life with some even becoming one of my favourite games of all time.
Such a sad shame to see them in the state they are nowadays they can and do still make some good games but its lost the spark it had back in the day and as for FF well aside from XIV the last one I truly enjoyed was X and that was in 2001. I want to believe the VII remake will be amazing but im keeping my hopes low and wishes high.
Without even thinking, my #1 would have to be Monolith Soft. The incredible stories, addictive battle systems, immersive exploration, and mesmerizing music makes them my favorite dev hands down.
Sakaguchi formed Mistwalker Studios when he left Square.
R.I.P suikoden and castlevania i miss you so much
RIP any game license owned by Konami....Blood Roar..sigh
Konami should just get the fuck out of the gaming industry and sell all their IPs.
It's not 2004 anymore Yu-Gi-Oh cards won't keep Konami's lights on forever.
yea and the panchinko machines to lol
@@Chelaxim
I miss 2D castlevanias so bad... Loved the ones in the Ds
My Top 5
1 Tri-Ace
2 Sega Atlus
3 Falcom
4 Square Enix
5 Monolith Soft
Alone Wolf what about square soft?
@William Marshal lol😅. I see you man of culture as well.
Great video, as always!
Can you make a list of the soundtrack present on the list? I liked the Nanco-Bandai track.
My top 5
1. Falcom
2. Atlus
3. Namco Bandai
4. Square Enix
5. Sega
Another great video man , I had a question, I recently purchased the "after years " for the wii which is supposed to be after final fantasy 4 or 2 in NA. What did you think of it if you played it.
Just imagine the one-man-company Yoko Taro. That would be my number one too.
Unfortunately he can't be included. That makes it for me as followed:
1. Falcom
2. tri-Ace
3. Intelligent Systems
The rest is more or less just entertaining but not great.
I haven't played much Falcom games but all were great. On the other hand I at least played nearly every tri-Ace game. I liked all I played long enough. There was one I'd always wanted to try but unfortunately it never came to the west and only few know about it. The game is called Labyrinth no Kanata and was a 3DS exclusive.
The historical infos about some of the developers were really interesting.
ahahahahahahah intelligent systems
nice joke man
Great video! Top 10 JRPG Cities/Towns please 🙏
Lets not forget Altus backed other game studios like Fromsoftware for cult hits like Demon Souls & 3d dot game heroes to saving underfunded kickstarters like Citizens of Earth, an Earthbound style game.
i'm fan of vanillaware, i love all games from they
Great list! Tales forever! You have great passion for video games.
Thank you!!!!!
Speaking of Langrisser,it has been brought out on mobile devices and this jrpg is freakin awesome and sweet plus i still can't get enough of Growlanser because of how indepth of a strategic rpg it truly is.
I managed to get the original Odin Sphere as well and i haven't had much problems with it since i figured out that its best to move around as much as possible to be able to wipe out the enemy so you won't get overwhelmed in battle.
Radiata stories and star ocean 3 are some of my faves of all time. Wish tri- ace would shine a little more lately. Tali’s is phenomenal as well. I live persona, but devil survivor has that dark tense atmosphere I loved.
Capcom for Breath of fire 1-4 Dragons dogma Monster Hunter
I knew within a second who you're dishonorable mention about Suikoden was xD
Personally my favorite developer is Tetsuya Takahashi and his team who made Xenogears. Followed op by the team who made Seiken Densetsu 3.
I would actually argue that Falcom's and Atlus' library can match classic Squaresoft blow for blow, with stuff like Legend of Heroes and SMT/Persona holding its own alongside FF 1-9, and Ys 7/8 and Radiant Historia being a good match to Chrono Trigger, and so on.
No one will argue that, man. Those 3 companies are the best.
Can you imagine if the top artists and game creators in the world came together collaboration in a project that would be one insane JRPG probably the best JRPG in existence.
SUIKODEN!! ❤️❤️❤️ Man, I teared up when you showed Suikoden series... ㅠ.ㅠ Suikoden 1 and 2... are literally the one's that got me into jrpg.
MY favorite game companies: ATLUS, Gust, Falcom, Namco Bandai, and Square Enix.
excellent choices:
Mine would be Squaresoft, Tri Ace, Level 5 and Quintet, that piece of info, of the developer of the first Tales of, explains why is my favororite of the series, it does feels like a Tri Ace title
By the way,Suikoden is such an awesome game series and i worked my butt off to be able to recruit all 107 stars Erick. 😆
Also i definitely support Atlus because of all the amazing games they have brought out so they have my vote on being super amazing as a gaming company! 😄
I love Squaresoft/Enix. Though I am pretty biased because I played my first JRPG from them, have my favorite JRPG series from them, and among my top games from all time from them. On the other hand it makes sense since I am a rabid SaGa fan boy with it being my favorite series, first JRPG with Final Fantasy Legend III, and Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song being my favorite.
Nothing can replace Kawazu.
My personal preference is Tri-Ace > Squaresoft > Monolithsoft top 3 in the world with a close falcom 2nd I couldn't decide between Tri-Ace Squaresoft and Falcom so they all occupy the 1st slot. Actually add the original squareenix and the creator of Nier games to my top 1st list lol
God, you're literally the only guy i watch for good jrpgs
awesome list as usual Eric. Personally Idea Factory is one of my faves simply due to the Spectral and Blazing Souls(Awesome battle system with nice visual) and Agarest Senki(Retains the awesome battle system with not over the top annoying Fan Service). Need a new Agarest game.
Thanks!
cant sometimes agree enough with your videos especially the things said about squaresoft (miss those times D;)
my fav devs in no particular order are probably monolith, falcom, gust, atlus, squareSOFT, quintett (D;)
Square from the 90' would be my favorite, but it doesn't exist anymore... So I guess Sega takes the cake now. Shame they ignore Shining Force and Phantasy Star now, but their recent Like a Dragon is proof they can still make amazing RPGs.
Have played plenty of Nihon Falcom games like Ys and the Trails series and have not been disappointed one bit.
LEVEL-5!!!
Yesssss! Yo Kai watch and fantasy life 👍
Playing Suikoden V at the moment. About 30 hours in, so I'm probably about halfway through the game. Never finished it, so this time I'm fixing that.
I would put out level 5 on the list, they made DQ viii and ix, rogue galaxy, a masterpiece in dark cloud 2, ni no kuni
You are very very hard working. Edit- Am motivated by this.
Expecting Suqre on 1 cuz you fav is chrono cross, but good argumentation. They gone and most prolific dev of jrpg all time is Atlus. 100% agree with list.
I still think monolithsoft is better than Atlus for JRPG's that Xenoblade Chronicles X is the biggest JRPG of all time in the last 30 years since games were invented
I think its the localization company and not the true developers but pretty much every single game localized by Working Designs is a classic. The Arc of Lad games, Lunar, Alundra, Albert Odyssey and a few more they have so many great games they brought to us! They always did such a good job also that is one company I truly miss.
I would add Game Arts (Grandia series) to my personal list.
Nice video as usual! Happy to see compile heart/IF are also there. After all nobody else tried so systematically to crossbreed the visual novel genre with other genres (among others, the jrpg genre). In a way I believe they are more innovative and seminal than other bigger firms. Uhm.. and also FROM should be there right? ;)
Ah... team ninja also came out with Nioh, a very interesting new action jrpg (even tho Team Ninja is not normally associated with JRPGs.. yet).
Love Team Ninja. Especially Enslaved, what a great hidden gem!
love enslaved but that's ninja theory I guess.. also Hellblade, great great game! hey maybe I am wrong I mean they have almost the same name it's just that from ninja gaiden to enslave would be to much of a jump... I should check
lmao, you're right, I confused both companies.
Still did not watch video. So I am writing this message before watching video.
Number One - Nihon Falcom
Number Two - Atlus
Number Three - Squaresoft not Enix.
Number Four - Namco Bandai Tales Studio
Number Five - Others.
I think NISA deserves a slot here, even if they games has a lot of fan service, there is great series like Disgaea, Atelier and even Hyperdimension
Disgaea is Nippon Ichi, Atelier is Gust, and I have no clue who develops Hyperdimension
My Top 10
10 Camelot
9 Falcom
8 Monolith Soft
7 Tri Ace
6 Nintendo
5 Game Arts
4 Capcom
3 Namco Bandai
2 Atlus
1 Square Enix
You should indeed make a top 10 best jrpg directors list. Then taro will get his due. I have trouble making a list like this because most my fav developers aren't good anymore
Yeah, Taro, Sakaguchi and Gotanda would top the list. Kamitami as well.
@@ErickLandonRPG Indeed. I'd also include Matsuno in that list, and maybe Kitase.
Hey Erick, how many JRPGs have you completed? I'm just curious since you seem to know a lot about JRPG.
I lost count a long time ago.
sick xymox shirt dude
oh hey Erick, where is Suikoden II on that table at the end? :)
;(
@Mountain MGTOW so true!
god I miss Suikoden....I mean I hated the army battles in Suikoden III and sadly never got to play anything after Suikoden IV but it's one of my favorite RPG franchises.
a few of my other favorites not mentioned:
Camelot ( mainly for the Golden Sun series but they did also create Shining Force... )
Game Freak ( Pokemon, man.....also the upcoming Town looks quite interesting )
Brownie Brown ( Magical Vacation & Starsign, as well as being a big part of Mother 3 and some Mana games )
AlphaDream ( Mario & Luigi series as well as the sadly Japan only Tomato Adventure )
I also kind of want to say Quintet, but idk if they're still around or what else they may have made besides the obscure & underrated Robotrek for SNES
Nooo. Lol If you love Suikoden I think you'll thoroughly enjoy Suikoden V. I think Erick and many others would agree. Hope you're able to play Suikoden V sooner than later, newageBoundhippie.
A pretty solid list but for me I consider most Zelda titles as RPGs so Nintendo would make my list. also an extremely talented but sadly now defunct studio, Imageepoch was one great studio, i really do wish they were still around.
Wonder if monolift soft will ever do a remake of xenogears that will have most if not all of the things that were left out of the original game
great list. i wold put nippon ichi in the top 3, and sting at least in the honorable mentions
Fuck, I forgot Sting Entertainment!
Yes, some love for Threads of Fate.
Career Soft is my favorite developer of all time! And Langrisser, my favorite series!
1. Career Soft
2. Atlus
3. Square Enix
4. Sega
5. Nintendo
When i was young i played square soft games and legend of dragoon
Squaresoft set the standard in the 90s. JRPGs might still be a niche genre if not for 90s Square
Here´s my top 5:
1.- Atlus.
2.- Monolith.
3.- Tri-Ace
4.- Falcom
5.- Square Enix - not Square soft- because I haven´t play its games.( I know that is not in the list, but well... )
And Camelot Software Planning? Shining Force and Golden Sun are great.
Hidden gem: Zeboyd
Breath of Death VII, Cthulhu Saves The World, Penny Arcade Rain Slick 3 & 4, and Cosmic Star Heroine are all excellent games.
To me it is Atlus mainly because My favorite rpg series is SMT
I wish princess crown would've got a localisation here in America. Vanillaware make such beautiful games
Yeah, me too.
Only thing I would have done was flipped 1 and 2. I love Atlus as I believe P5 is the best JRPG I've ever played but I don't feel the got the "rap sheet" Squaresoft/Square Enix has.
I don't like rap at all ;)
@@ErickLandonRPG Lol. Sorry. I'm not sure if I confused you with that terminology. What I meant by "rap sheet" is the long standing reputation and internationally known gaming history.
My Favorite JRPG company:
1. Tri Ace (for Valkyrie Profile & Star Ocean)
2. Atlus ( for Persona series)
3. the old Squaresoft ( for the classic Final Fantasy & Xenogears)
4. Enix ( for Mahoujin Guru-guru & Dragon Quest series)
5. Namco ( for Tales series)
.
.
.
.
999. The current SquareEnix.
100%agree, square enix right now suck!
Molotith soft , atlus y vanillawere son muy buenos algún día esperando que salga oficialmente soma bringer o Grand knight ah occidente
What is the game at 4:29?
I know this is late but it's psp game called Grand Knights History
How was tales number 8 tales is still going unlike some of the other companies you mentioned. That doesn't make sense
i have to say monolith soft just because there has been no non epic games, i haven't played xenosaga because PAL region
My top 3 JRPG devs:
SquareSoft
Climax Entertainment
Natsume
@Erick Landon RPG How could you forget Chunsoft(whom created nearly every great DQ game, including all the spin-offs worth playing aside from the Builders games. Chunsoft also turned Rogue-like into a genre, and omg they still are outdoing themselves on that front, no one can touch them), and Nippon(Digaea games, and many one off tactic/RPGs).
They're not among my favourites.
@@ErickLandonRPG I just reread the title to make sure, the title doesn't say your personal favorites, it says the best. However that statement of yours definitely explains a few things in the list, that don't seem to belong.
Atlus ❤️❤️❤️ I love Shin Megami Tensei, Persona and Etrian Odyssey!!!
My top 5:
1) Atlus (Persona, Shin Megami Tensei)
2) Sega (Phantasy Star, Shining Force, Yakuza Like a Dragon, Sakura Wars, Skies of Arcadia, Shining Force)
3) Falcom (Legend of Heroes, Ys)
4) Konami (Suikoden)
5) Square (Final Fantasy, Secret of Man3).
Watched 20 seconds... i wasnt thinking "what took so long" but "what are you thinking!? This is a controversy waiting to happen! Lol"
11:56
spotted the emulator :^)
My top 5 Devs:
1) Square Enix
2) Bandai Namco
3) Rockstar Games
4) CD Projekt Red
5) 4A Games
So, you are saying that Atlus, based of SMT/Persona sagas and a few more titles has surpassed Square?? It is true they ve let in the back burner great IPs and the later FF are not in the VI-IX standard but to say ATLUS is in the front is too much
Me I'm the best game developer cause I thought up all these ideas way before anyone of your mentions like 1985 lol
i pray to GOD that growlanser be ported on steam
I like the games created by mistwalker they could've gotten a mention ya know since u mentioned hironobu sakaguchi
Looks like you didn't watch the entire video.
Re watched my bad watching UA-cam and taking care of a baby is not a good combo lol
Square before Square Enix is sort of like Bioware before being acquired by EA. Both kings of RPGs in their region of the world, until another company came and the real talent mostly left. I wonder what Eric would think of Knights of the Old Republic, or Dragon Age: Origins?
Yeah, everything after Mass Effect 2 is garbage.
Totaly agree on Squaresoft, they were the best.
Number 1: Atlus. Obviously
I would give Sega higher place on the list. Phantasy Star, Valkyria Chronicles, Shining Force, Skies of Arcadia, Panzer Dragoon Saga or even Beyond Oasis series
Yeah, but Sega only developed PS and VC, the others you mentioned were just published by them.
@@ErickLandonRPG True but still those published games are really great.
Am I the only one who like falcom for Gurumin and Nayuta The Endless Trails
xenosaga would be an awesome steam game
Wasn't Odin sphere on the PSP too?
Nope.
@@ErickLandonRPG I know there's a game that looks exactly like it for the PSP can't remember what it is though
It's in between Odin sphere and princess crown
Ar Tonelico is the most underrated series of all time...have you heard the songs?!
Their songs are only good if you favor foreign sounding vocals over instruments.. i do not.
It's a shame that Square Enix is a shadow of what Squaresoft was these days. Thankfully I feel Monolith Soft has taken the reins from them and become the successor to Squaresoft, with the Xeno franchise being comparable to the Final Fantasy of yore. Though the interesting thing about Monolith soft is that the Xeno franchise is really the only JRPG franchise they have going these days and the majority of their other work is as a support developer for Nintendo. They're honestly less of a JRPG developer and more of a jack of all trades developer these days because of this, but have definitely enriched the Nintendo franchises they've work on. I can't wait to see the next Xeno game, but I also can't wait to see what they do beyond Breath of the Wild with Nintendo franchises.
You could do a Top 10 anime of all time video.
maybe top 10 anime based on jrpg :P
I've done JRPGs based on anime, don't know if that'll do.
I'll make a top 10 of my favourite anime series, eventually.
I asked for Odin Sphere so long ago. Guess it's a real shame I never got to try it. I don't have any Sony consoles right now and I may not be able to get any for a while since I have long had a very limited budget. I also never knew Dragon's Crown was the same style game as Odin Sphere. And yeah, Namco was already involved with the first game Tales of Phantasia so I would have just said Namco. And I thought that team worked on Star Ocean as they are very similar looking games. I never knew Devil Survivor was linked to Growlanser.
And... I really don't think Intelligent Systems was actually formed until around Paper Mario. They were basically just a branch of Nintendo like HAL. I guess these companies can be considered independent, but they were almost entirely reliant on Nintendo so I disagree.. For the first Fire Emblem game, Intelligent Systems seemingly didn't create too much of the game as Nintendo provided a large amount of the framework. Also, while I am one of the people who told people about Threads of Fate before seemingly everyone knew about it, I think SaGa Frontier is a much more solid underrated game. Threads of Fate is a more niche game targeted toward kids, therefore not having much complexity and replay value beyond being a well made game (which it could have been designed a bit better, especially Mel's area). And I'm glad that Atlus is number 1.
Almost cry when you finish your talk about number 2. I feel like it has died. And it makes me sad.
They still made final fantasy 14. 7 remake is absolutely epic and 16 is looking pretty amazing too so hopefully they are starting to turn things around
@@SurferKroky
@david Ahern
Well... FF VII has 24 years and to me it is a better game than this remake.
I've got it on Plus and besides graphics that looks really amazing, the game is a boring button mashing.
I stoped to play after the bike scene and that biker guy.
About XIV, I'm not into MMORPG games. It sucks to me. And XVI, the trailer was the final nail in the coffin to me.
Atlus FTW
Atlus is the best now no doubt, but squaresoft always have a special place in my heart
I was kinda afraid that atlus wounldnt aprear
"Sega"
"Lets not mention Shining, the biggest and most prolific Sega RPG franchise"
okay.
I also find it kinda funny how you leave out Enix, which essentially created the JRPG and has the most revolutionary franchise in the history of the industry.
Shining games are not made by Sega, but by Camelot Software (same people who did Golden Sun).
Sorry... "were" =(
@@ErickLandonRPG Valkyria Chronicles was done by Media Vision and you listed them under Sega, though. Who coincidentally also does a bunch of Shining games.
I meant the first Shining games, you know?
And the first VC was NOT made by Media Vision. They only ASSISTED in the development of 3, 4 and Revolution.
Cattle Call 😊
I did consider that one but there's only like 2 or 3 games I like. They need to make more JRPGs!!!
I fucking want Grand Knight history in PS4 o vita
Clan of Xymox is cool
I was hoping Camelot would get an honorable mention. I was like surely enix will make it....But when you didn't even have Level 5 on the list I cried
Squaresoft made it, NOT SquareEnix.
@@ErickLandonRPG you broke my heart Erick. You broke my heart.....
All I'm sure about is Atlus is undisputably #1
"However great it might have been, it's now a thing from the past".
Painful and punishing, but it's the truth.
