It doesn't matter who Israel would have chosen, they would have called it political! The second-place candidate is a proud Israeli Arab who wanted to perform a song in Arabic. If you think they wouldn't have created drama around this... Yuval was chosen because she is truly a strong singer and out of an inexplicable desire of a high percentage of the country to see her successful and strong after being helpless and injured.

As an Israeli, I just have to comment about this specific topic, but calmly of course.
Israel is quite a small country, and most people were affected by October 7th for example, so pretty much nearly anyone would have had some connection to it, and then called "political" by fans...
Yuval is a great singer, we can all hear her performances, so why not judge her by her voice (and later on, song), and leave her?
Plus, when we talk about "Eurovision X is already a mess", it's hard not to notice how Yuval for example was just chosen and we already see comments against her, including people wishing Hamas would have killed her that day...
Criticise Israel as much as you want, keep it civil, and leave Yuval out of this as long as she does.

The only problem i have with the your interpretation of the situation with Israel is that being political was accepted for every country apart from Israel. They couldn’t reference the situation in any possible way in the performance or clothes etc, while Ukraine had literal rockets on the screen in their staging, and several other contestants made pro Palestinian statements in their performances (like the nails on Portugals contestant and the symbol on the forehead of the Irish contestant). In 2023 Croatia sent maybe the most political song ive heard and that was fine. If Israel tried to send unicorn in 2024 it would also be disqualified for being too political. At the end of the day if they are about to enforce a rule they should enforce it for everyone and not just the controversial country. And don’t even get me started on the members of the committees admitting they didn’t vote for Israel because they feared being cancelled. We see what governs most people, its not the love for music. And as for Yuval, she is such a strong vocalist and an emotional song is the right choice for her to showcase her strength and i would argue that forcing her to do anything she isn’t connected to is more political than her singing about her experience.

Agree with everything except at the end, with a country in war, it can be hard to not let that be reflected in their songs, we have seen this in Ukraine especially with their selections and songs and I don’t necessarily think it’s wrong, war is a reality and if you want a song to represent the country it can be hard to sing about rainbows and sunshine. It’ll be definitely harder now with Yuval Raphael when she needs a song that represents her story, and her country, and again I don’t think it’s political to show emotions connected to war, and this applies to everyone, even hypothetically Palestine if they were to participate, would we really expect Gazas to send a dance pop song?

IMO Eurovision must be a celebration of music judged only on artistic merit, not influenced by international crises/political narratives. By this logic, I don’t like how 1944 was accepted and also don’t think songs like October Rain have a place in the contest. The events of October 7th in Israel, and the subsequent destruction of Gaza is horrific. There’s no denying that. But the public should not be swayed by geopolitical events on either side in my view.

@chromaticasforecast4419 I think the comparison with Ukraine is disingenuous. Being at war or extreme turmoil while participating has been happening since at least the 60s and 70s (ie "The Troubles" in the UK and Ireland). It's one of those things that should be looked at on an individual basis. Israel has been accused of genocide and war crimes by the ICC and other reputable organizations (the same has been done to Russia/Putin). Ukraine also did not astroturf and pay for mass ad campaigns for televote points in 2022 since winning and hosting wasn't a priority while Israel's tourism dropped drastically after 10/7 and their economy isn't great so hosting Eurovision would potentially alleviate those things.

Azerbaijani oil wells will continue producing petrodollars, that the regime in Azerbaijan (generation 2) will use to make Eurovision look like a whore they can buy, like some German politicians in Brussels, thus destroying the core ideas and values of Eurovision. The regime in Baku is responsible for ethnic cleansing, holding political prisoners, prisoners of war, using torture, and whitewashing everything with "caviar" diplomacy. Pres, Aliyev is a Saddam Hussein in making, and far more dangerous. Sad for Eurovision losing its freedom from corrupt dictators like Aliyev.

I appreciate someone who thinks for themselves and doesn't get pressured by the fandom because the fandom have been wrong about MANY things each year. For example, they're wrong about the Ukrainian NF: Ziferblat are the clear favourites for most Ukrainians and there's a reason - they have the best song.
However for me, I'm gonna have to disagree politely about Israel. I strongly believed Israel ruined the competition last year by choosing a political song that manipulated the lives of those who died even when it was watered down by the EBU to not be so political. I personally believed they should have sat out that year. My stance is similar to Stig Karlsen's. If a country is going through a political controversy, it would be best for them to withdraw for the sake of the other countries. I totally understand your point of view though which I appreciate. I just wish people would be more open-minded or respectful about their conversations rather than banning people outright like with the Eurovision subreddit. You know I have to disagree with what you said about Israel. First their national final was a clear propaganda, and that is fine by me if they are just showing it to their citizens, but not in a national final that will select an entry to Eurovision. Eurovision is supposed to be a show that unites people and does not involve politics. Unfortunately Israel was the country that caused last year's competition to be one of the most toxic one in the history, and from what I can see they are on their way to do that to this year's competition too. It would be fair and square game if they had just withdrawn from the competition, then trying to play the victim card at Eurovision. The singer that they have selected has it even written in her wikipedia that she was part of the attack, which in my opinion clearly shows that she is trying to get votes by using the sympathy card. None of the singers who have represented Ukraine, or Kosovars who represented Albania have it in their bio that during a certain part of their life they had to endure war. So let's keep things straight and not sugarcoat the "propaganda".
