This is just talent, I grew up a kid in this era, the responders are absolutely right. It is so great to watch, such fluid moves and great orchestrations. The current era of cheerleading (I won't knock it) this is just so much more than that.
Exactly what i thought...i wasnt even born when this video was recorded, but i do enjoy 80-mid 90's cheer routines more...it does need more techniques to pull today's cheer routine, but there are too many things happening at the same time, that it seems so crowded and is not pleasant to watch 😆😆😆
This is the best video I've seen in ages. Good ole fashioned cheerleading/dance. I love tumbling and acrobatics, but looser more fluid movement is more appealing to watch...but boy did pyramid formation take a lot longer back then. Thanks for the post.
What happened to the seventh girl on the squad after the introductions? The one with the slightly different-color vest @ 0:43. Was she some kind of JV understudy?
I didn't know cheerleaders were this decent in 1980...haha. But it's crazy how much cheerleading has evolved. The stunts and tumbling are like 10 times harder these days
Ashley Reina uhm have you seen the video?? There are some amazing stunts there and the one guy's tumbling was really good. Sure the style is a little different but it doesn't look easy👀
I remember a stand-up comic named Skip Stephenson who remarked how cheerleading had changed since _he_ went to high school (presumably in the Sixties). "Back then, our cheers went 'Strawberry shortcake; Suzy Q! Come on, team, we're rooting for you.' Nowadays, though, the cheers are much more intimidating. I heard one inner city squad chant 'Ungowa! Soul power! You'll all be dead within an hour.' " 🤣🤣🤣
@quettle1 So, did you cheer for U. K. or somewhere else, or did you take your life in another direction all together? Hoping you had a great time in college, where ever you ended up going!
Finalists that year (and that competed on the show) were: 1st Place: Indiana State University; 2nd Place: UK; 3rd Place: Memphis State; 4th Place: Ohio State & 5th Place: University of Florida.
wow cheerleading changed so much, the way they did stunts would have been a safety havard lols because there was no safety way up or down lols nor spotting lols.
amyfpolk ...will you post the championship Indiana State University routine. I heard they entered the floor using a cheerleader as a human jumping rope. I gotta see that!!!
I'm sorry DriveAustra, I had to have the UK portion of the show professionally made into a "QT" file to upload to youtube. Someone from ISU could take their tape to a professional and have the same done...sorry!
boy, cheerleading competitions sure have changed over the years lol. I love these old school competition videos.
Yes, they became a lot more stressfull to the body!
That is what is going on!
Thanks for sharing this gem! People might laugh at the style from back then, but it still took real talent and athleticism to get those stunts up.

Music much better music than what is pumped out in the 2000’s. Even using the school fight song. More actual dance as well.
OMG I cheered in the 80's this brings back soo many memories, thanx 4 posting :-)
That was fantastic. I wish all cheer teams would perform like that today instead of trying to go 100miles an hour.

Wow even the mascot gets lifted.
So many banned moves. So sad that they're gone forever.
This is fantastic!!! Kentucky always has great cheerleaders. I wonder where they all are now!!! Great performance and so much fun!!!

They were being safety-conscious. And, after all, safety consciousness _Is_ the ultimate health awareness!
My grandparents are up there. :O
@ivybray1288 That is fantastic. How are they nowadays? They'd be over 60 years old now, in 2024.
Good health to them!
WOW This program and cheerleading has come a loooooooooooonnnnng Way
Best thing i've seen in years

Sadly, Mr. Stephenson passed away thirty-one years ago...when he was only 52. 😞

Thank you for your supportive words...I'll pass them along!
80's and 90's teens seem like adult persons, today teens look like children. Why?
jesusr925 This is a college. They are adults, not teens.
It’s the haircuts
Men holding up men... man that’s crazy! Men weight SO MUCH heavier than women. Also the “stairs” move was also really cool.
