- Joanne Carson, the second wife of Johnny Carson and the host of her own syndicated talk show, died in 2015, at her home in Los Angeles. She was 83.
She had been in hospice care, Ed Rada, the executor of her estate, said.
Born Joanne Copeland in Los Angeles on Oct. 20, 1931, she married Carson in 1963, a year after he began hosting “The Tonight Show.”
She had appeared as the co-host of an early 1960s game show, “Video Village,” and later had her own syndicated health-and-fitness talk show, “Joanne Carson’s V.I.P.’s.” She went on to earn a master’s degree in psychology and a Ph.D. in nutritional biochemistry and physiology.
People used to be so much more polite and genuine years ago.
Tell me about it
I'm 75 and you are right. I've watched it change.
Being polite is the opposite of genuine
@@Scram673 you can be both. People are complex, and cultures can be very different.
They had class
Wow! We can all take lessons from this beautiful gracious woman on how to deal with divorce and be a true and loyal friend. Pure class
She married someone who would always have money to support her. He wasn't a sociopath wife beater.
Some divorces. Leave and don't look back you will get punched in the face. Or, do you have any money?
The interviewer is really good at her job.
She truly cares and listens.
She was always loyal and supportive. What a great attitude. RIP Joanna Carson.
I believe this is Joanne, not Joanna.
This is his second wife Not his third wife.....his first three wives’ names started with J and the second two were similarly spelled but not the same.
@@nancycurtis488 So which one that cheated on him with Frank Gifford? Not this one?
@saramill2097and who was Johnny cheating with at that time?
According to Bombastic Bushkin, this wife, Joanne, cheated on Johnny with Frank Gifford, though Joanne denied it.@@ashashraa6579
She was lovely. Her and Truman C's friendship was a blessing to both of them.
I'm a huge Johnny Carson fan. He's a big reason I became a comedian. And this little piece of history about this lovely woman who shared his life for so long is a real gift. Thank you.
I'll never forget her generously helping Capote when he needed her.
Agree. I'm glad he had her as one loyal and good friend at the end.
Such a lovely strong woman. After finding out her diagnosis of her long illness she went on to help others. A fabulous helpful thing to do. Thank you for this posting.
Seems like a very lovely woman. Very impressed by her strength and class.
Yes, classy and kind, so hard to find.
I like how the interviewer is trying hard to get her to spill the tea and she DOESN'T. Good job!!
she was really lovely in that beautiful 60s retro way - what a lovely lady.
How nice to talk so nice about Jonny Carson. She derives alot of RESPECT. He gone she could have said anything
Kathy Simmons he was still alive when this interview took place.
Had no idea she was so close to Truman Capote. To have such a good friend and confidante for so long is a blessing....especially in L.A.
@Smurfette Did It takes one to know one. Just saying.... 😎
She was buried next to him
He actually passed away at her home in 1984. I don't know how much detail they go into here. After Truman ostracized himself from most of his friends with "Answered Prayers," the first few chapters anyway, Joanna stuck with him through that.
She is naturally beautiful.
She still loves him, nothing but kind words from his Ex.
She was taking the high road. It's a lot less crowded too!
Great interview. Joanne seems very sincere and Ellen Prose (the interviewer) asks probing questions without overstepping boundaries or being out of line. It's impressive that Joanne didn't simply live off her alimony payments, but went on to create a career of her own.
She said that Johnny Carson hid his vulnerability and sensitive nature through comedy. Profound.
And his cruelty
This lady is a class act.❤
The interviewer's side profile reminds me of David Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust period.
mittelfruh lolololol
OMG, I just spit out my coffee at 1:11.......LMAO!
Good lawd!!!
N I love it lol
So true!!
Joanne reminds me of Charmian Carr when she played Liesl in the movie "The Sound of Music". I realize that Charmian was about 10 years younger than Joanne, but you can still see how they resembled each other. Both had a sparkling, classic beauty.
Yes! Thank you! I was trying to think who she resembled.
Nice interview, she’s not spiteful or mean she’s uplifting and positive, right on🤙
Leikili Maile I Guess She Shouldn’t Be Spiteful She Pushed Carson too the Wall.!! U should Read What She Got & For Wht.?? Laying on her back.?? Carson the One That Worked, She didn’t do Anything.. But UR Right I See what Ur Saying Divorce is Nasty..
@@marcamerine6179200 grand settlement, plus 100 grand alimony for life..not bad at all. This was just when Johnny really started to make his money. The first 8-10 years he made good money, but really had no ownership. In the late 60's he was sued for back child support and he admitted he owed it, but did not have the money. His 3rd wife gave him the big shaft. that one cost his big bucks, lol.

She had an affair with frank Gifford while she was married to john
The most important info one can add and no one ever does is the DATE when the video was made How many you tube videos never include the date??
Judging by her DOB and the intervewer's fashions, it's sometime in the 80's. I do agree with you that posters often omit crucial bits of info. That's also UA-cam's fault since the portal should require a certain set of standardized info to be included before a clip can be posted.
Yes I agree, but usually you can tell about that time frame it is by their hair styles & clothes.. I'm thinking this Is late 80s, early 90s

She died May 8 2015
She has been dead 4 yrs by 2019. Sad to say, but 83 aint too shabby.
I could handle Truman Capote for like 5 minutes.
Carolyn Nigro i know, right !?
That’s 4 minutes more than Capote can handle himself. He had a miserable childhood, being abandoned at a young age, and forever after seeking maternal love & social acceptance from the rich society ladies, who were happy enough to allow the brilliant gay writer to escort them to their social gatherings whenever their husbands were to busy working or playing with their mistresses…so the social acceptance he got & deserved. But these women were pitifully lacking in mothering skills, even for their own children. And Capote’s emotional self-indulgence & self-destructiveness sealed his doom.

Beautiful lady, amazing interview! Thank you for uploading💖🌈💖
I miss Johnny on the tonight show None of the new talk show hosts have that special charm like he did
Charm hell, they are just lefty politcal talking point readers now, except maybe Falon and they got mad at him for being nice to Trump. Carson had class and was damned funny and intelligent. Not political. Everyone could laugh at all the politicians bc true comedy has an inkling of true in it. Stephen Cobert is a schill idiot.
Johnny is on Pluto TV 24/7 - I watch him a lot!
Johnny Carson was an asshole he was a prick to a lot of people that came on the show guess you didn’t really know that again he was an asshole.
2021 I still watch Johnny Carson reruns
And I enjoy them as much now as I did
back then Every night at 11:30pm All of America watched Carson!
@Smurfette Did It you completely missed his point assbag.
Excellent point made´on the difference between medicine and nutrition. The comment underneath this is sarcastic, but this woman got a Ph.D in the subject . We don't know what she was like before, but she certainly was a kind-hearted, genuine person.
I met her briefly when she and Johnny paid a visit to a summer camp I attended at the time. They were there because one of his sons was attending a musical camp (Camp Encore) and of the Encore kids were performing at our camp. At the time I was a huge Tonight Show fan and was over the moon to meet my idol. We had a scuba diving program and he spent some time with us talking about his recent interest in the sport (he bragged that he had gone diving with Cousteau). Needless to say, it stands out as a great memory more than 50 years later.

Jacques Yves Cousteau is my greatest hero.
She seems so nice
Wow
I always heard he was mean spirited. Thank you for YOUR view of him
The allegations are that he was a mean spirited drunk. Sober no one complained of any meanness.
I read that when Truman died she fought legally over his ashes with Truman’s husband. She ended up getting half of them and his ashes stayed in her house for a long time and she finally decided that it was time to enter his ashes somewhere so one day she buckled up his urn in the passenger seat of her convertible and drove around LA talking to Truman and asking where he wants to be buried and she came across the cemetery that Marilyn Monroe happened to be at. So that’s where he went and when she died she requested her ashes to be in the same mausoleum with him and on the plaque it says “the best of friends” she truly loved capote.
He had a "partner", not a husband. His name was Jack Dunphy. Same sex marriages were not legal back then.
@@EllEss331 even though they weren’t legally married they were recognized as husbands. Friends and family would refer to them as husbands.
This sounds like bullshit rumors
@@LizzyL2024 they are buried together though…
I had a health condition that was a mystery for a while as well and every doctor I went to said to take some psychiatric drugs rather than doing to work to discover the actual problem. This woman is very intelligent.
I want a wife that loves me as much as Johnny's ex-wife loved him.
Joanne Carson was such a faithful friend to Truman Capote.
Molly Ringwald plays Joanne in “Capote v. the Swans.”
Well, shoot. This woman was SO accomplished, but til this moment all I'd heard about her was she was one of Carson's exes. Thanks for posting this and showing Joanna as an actual person.
How come the date of this interview is not listed? That’s the most important bit of information.
Holy 🐄. I mean that in the best way intended. This woman of "advanced years" could just simply exist on a hubby's paycheck. That's fine & cool if both agree and live happily w that. She went back to school & clearly she is driven and has social graces; she became a Doctor! God Bless and listen well to all women & exes, widows, etc. You can do it, Beautiful Chicks!❤
I love your symbols! LOL
when WHEN are doctors going to learn about nutrition?! I just went through all of this just recently, this many decades later...and I have changed my life, with what I eat, no coffee, no refined sugar, no refined flours, less grains altogether - and with ONE visit to a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor who said, "Your allergic to this and that" food wise. Anyway...gracious woman.
I just watched 10 videos for symptoms of hypoglycemia & 🚫matched what she said she was going through.
Sounded more like bipolar to me. I'm rather surprised to hear she went on to get a medical degree in some way. Doesn't really add up
Great interview. I really loved your show Eileen.
It’s better to laugh then to cry. That’s hard to argue with.
Joanne is a classy lady and so is the interviewer
When I saw this clip, I immediately thought of Eddie Murphy, in the film Raw, talking about Johnny having to give away "half" his money.
Me too, "A 150 million dollars! I better be able to eat that shit! "
Johnny from heaven;" Prenup, get a Prenup"!
i don't think I've learned enough from this interview. I want to watch it again...
I love Truman capote. When I was a kid in the 79s I only knew him as a funny sounding guy on tv talk show.
He was a incredible.
Joann seems sincere.
wow, some people resent and squander everything there given, but this lady understands and cherishes it. Very special, Johnny was lucky, quite a lady.
And, remember she said she's been lucky her whole life with tremendous loving, kind, and amazing people .. that helps too :)
Vox Clamantis ,
She had a secret apartment for sleeping with frank gifford while she was married to John
Yea right, HaHaHa !
"they're"
that damn Truman capote knew everybody.
I see a strong woman who is empowering herself and taking control and accountability for her life. Enough said.
Very good interview. Joanne Copeland seemed like a lovely soul. Really like her comments on Truman Capote. Friendship is a true blessing. Is it true her dad introduced her to Johnny? Thank you.
Good for her going to college and getting degrees.
What a kind and intelligent woman. Truman was lucky to have her as a friend. She was and is definitely a role model for women.
Unfortunately that's STILL how many doctors are even TODAY - they don't bother to ask about how you eat; they just write you a prescription for pills!!! I have to add that my Endocrinologist (Diabetes Dr.) sent me to a Dietitian, to make sure I understood the diabetes diet, but my family Dr. was never concerned with whether I was eating properly or not, before I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
Very cool interview.
Johnny called Joanne often after the divorce and he called Joanna often after their divorce.
This interview took place in 1985.
She seems like such a lovely person.
judging by the pink glass blocks in the background I would say this is mid to late 1980s
Nice of her to take the blame for the marriage going sour. He probably was never home and was surrounded by many women admirers. Just sayin.....
That's what I wld have thought and then read a couple comments about Joanne and Frank Gifford having a secret Apt together? 🤔
She had a secret apartment where she slept with the married frank gifford while she was married to john
Yeah it probably was his fault having a career and supporting his stay-at-home wife in luxury, her fucking Frank Gifford in her Hideaway New York apartment that Johnny was paying for behind his back probably had nothing to do with it. I wonder what Frank's wife thought. She probably thought the same thing you did, you know taking the high road and not being bitter and everything like that. And of course Joanne settling for millions from Johnny in the divorce.. if it had not been for Carson's high standards of morals and vowels getting in the way of their relationship and her cheating they would probably never gotten divorced.
Actually, I suppose I spoke too soon since I didn't know all of her dirty laundry of cheating. My guess is the marriage stunk from the beginning and they both married for wrong reasons (other than love). Oh well, that's showbiz.
I think he was just a jerk with no personality off camera.
The lack of an accurate diagnosis that she talks about is a very real problem with many, many people. Doctors are not infallible; if you don't get improvement in your health take the initiative and pursue a follow-up with a specialist or a generalist.
Great advice Nemo. Thank you for watching and taking the time to make such a sage comment. Eileen

Johnny was upset that Joanne purchased new furniture for their home and took the old furniture to her secret apartment.
My mother had hypoglycemia all her life, diagnosed 70 years ago. It can be diagnosed with a simple blood test screen, so I don't understand how her doctors missed it. Mom always carried hard candy when out just in case her level was low and she felt weak. She also binged on chocolate bars occasionally, I think as a compensation. Can it interfere with relationships? I seriously doubt that. Weird sense of reality expressed here. There is more to this story no one is saying.
If you go undiagnosed for years, you feel terrible, sweaty palms, weak, headaches, anemic, sick at stomach. How would you like to be bright and cheerful and be a good partner 24-7 feeling that way.

Mary Cahill - Agreed. This prig must have been a nightmare to live with because she's so fake now that she's "fixed."
Probably not but then she gives a good performance if she was really different than what she projects.
@@elizabethlehman4328 I am 62 years old. I was diagnosed when I was 15. I am also a nurse. Hypoglycemia is treated by a change in diet. The s/s this ex wife of Johnny describes sounds like a dozen different diseases. I cannot imagine any doctor telling her she had hypoglycemia and not send her to a dietitian. Low blood sugar does not have the symptoms she talked about 99.9% of the time.
She seems warm and genuine.
Interesting. I didn’t know she had a close friendship with Capote.
Both w Class...Thnx Johny and his supporting Cast...Joanne. Good Folks...good stuff!
Sounds like Bipolar, not Hypoglycemia
@Fred Virtuoso Where did you receive your medical degree genius?
Harvard
As a RN for over 35 years, I am not sure she is telling the truth. Hypoglycemia is a quick and easy diagnosis. Checking blood sugar is one of the very first blood tests a doctor does; particularly given her reported symptoms.
What a beautiful woman and human. Class act.
She was a huge force behind the Tonight Show. She had a huge influence on Johnny's career.
Johnny's wives were sitting on gold mines and they knew it.
Beautiful woman.
Did Johnny busting her with Frank Gifford, and having a secret apartment have anything to do with the divorce I wonder?
Lol ..my, my, way to spill the tea!
yes, she was with a football stout and fit Frank Gifford, compared to Johnny's aging smoke withered & alcohol degraded body. It was an easy tryst.
@@harpoon_bakery162 Facts!! Joanne and Johnny cheated on each other. Hypoglycemia my ass. I always loved Johnny and hardly ever missed his show. He was handsome, charming and witty. A naughty little boy. But I too would've had a love tryst with Gifford back in the day if I was Joanne. 😘

@Adrian At And T This is Joanne Copeland, the one that supposedly was caught with Gifford.
I liked this clip; learning about Joanne's hypoglycemia diagnosis after so many frustrating years of misdiagnosis. NOTE: Get a second opinion!
She certainly an educated, well-spoken person.
Note to Eileen Prose, our presenter: can you not show these in their original 4x3 aspect ration so the tops and bottoms aren't "lost to time" -- not seen?
Oh my!!! Wow, amazing... I had the same exact problem.. I wonder what year that was when her symptoms began. Oh, I’ve never talked to anyone nor listened to someone else describe their suffering experience with the same thing I had!!!! Yes... the doctor told me that most women want Valium for the complaints.. but I wanted help determining the cause of my crazy upsets. I felt like I had a demon inside of me. I would love to talk to her, but she may not still be living. I’m 75 yrs old now. Thankfully, back then, I had prayed and prayed asking the Lord to send someone or some materials into my life that would help describe what was causing my upsets. The next day I was invited to a Bible study and when I went, it turned out that the hosts had very similar health issues, and also they had books for me to take and read, and they told me what kinds of lab tests to get, and referred me to an md-nutritionist to go to. God was faithful to answer my prayers... and then I applied each thing I learned to improve my health through diet, B-12 injections, mega doses of vitamins, etc.
Hypoglycemia is fixed with a simple diet change, mainly cutting out sugar or other foods that spike your blood sugar. I'm surprised they didn't know that back then?
They certainly did know it-- it's just that she is being a bit of a phony!
see my comment to martin above. amazing how people think they have other people figured out that they never even met.
I had hypoglycemia back in the late 60's and the doctors treated me for everything, except the low blood sugar that I was experiencing.
Of course they knew how to test for hypoglycemia and how to treat it.
I had hypoglycemia over 15 years before developing type 1 diabetes. Never was tested for islet cell antibodies if they even had that test back then, in the late 1980s. Then, in 1996 after finishing MY PhD in Education at Penn State, I ended up in the hospital with Diabetic ketoacidosis and a blood sugar level of 858. I had previously been treated for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis which is a sister disease to type 1 diabetes. I have had no complications despite having had type 1 diabetes for over 21 years. Anyone experiencing hypoglycemia should be tested for automunw Thyroiditis and type 1 diabetes. The symptoms may show up years before.

He was only a great talk show host. He was not a great husband, or even a good one. He cheated on all his wives. He just couldn’t handle it when his wive treated him the same way that he treated her, and cheated on him too.
I heard Johnny cheated on her too and got abusive when he drank.

He was an aggressive drunk by his own admission. I've seen a video interview with Johnny where he openly talks about it. I'm not bashing him we're only human.
People are so quick to put this woman down. I think her quite charming. In Nebraska my aunt Joanne rode the bus daily with Johnny. He was sweet on her and did his magic tricks for her. Maybe he could have been my uncle Johnny..lol. Odd: My aunt Joanne..all his ex wives names. Creepy coincidence? Or was it all a ruse in order to save money on embroidered his and her bath towels.
So far, nobody has put her down. In fact, the word "lovely" is being overworked on most posts.
Excellent interview. Many women STILL have these same symptoms today and are dismissed by male doctors. To Joanne credit she pushed until she obtained her answers about WHAT was going on with her body and NOT her mind. l hope you don't mind, but l shared this clip to my FB.
Gloria Asbury-Covington Not just a female issue.
Gloria Asbury-Covington - What do you have against male doctors?
Ocean Hedonist Absolutely nothing. l actually have male AND female doctors. My history, along with most women, includes SOME male doctors that CAN have the God complex. l haven't run into female docs with the same issues.
then IMO you haven't met many female docs. or your bias is stronger than you think.

She is a good woman. Not full of hate.
For whatever reason for her to speak of Johnny in a positive way, I would much rather she talk like that, than to spew anger, hatred, and extremely personal details of their marriage! Save all that negative stuff for a psychiatrist to work out.
