It's not unique. Other Nguni languages such as Zulu (isiZulu) and Swazi (siSwati) also have clicks. There are other Bantu languages outside the Nguni group that have clicks, too, such as Gciriku and Yei, while the clicks in the Khoisan languages are so extensive that they make Xhosa seem tame in comparison.
I love your language as well.... Even though I think I could never learn it. These click sounds are so different to all the languages I know or speak.....
My 'q' flits between two, completely different cork-pop/door-knock sounds. I just don't know which one to use, but I guess between that, and bilabial clicks, and the kr/kl sound, I probably have most of the click-language sounds. Tone is another story, but I can track tonal languages decently.
Kitzy kat You can check out the likes of Stompie Mavi, Ringo Madlingozi, Phinda Mtya, Lungiswa, Simbone, Yakheem Ben Israel, Ohayv, Usiba Noncwadi, Iintloko Zenyoka, Mariam Makeba, Zola Mkiva, Umle, Thandiswa Mazwai, Ntsiki Mazwai, Brenda Fassie, Sivuyile Mdyogolo, Feya Faku etc.
You don't. Just click with your tongue to the side of the mouth a little bit, like the sound when you drive a horse on. It's actually much easier than trying to click your tongue on both sides of the mouth.
Not only in German but like in the majority of phonetical languages (Italian, Polish, Spanish, Albanian etc etc). Only English has such an absurd (with all due respect) pronunciation that it has to transcribe normal /a/ as "ah", /i/ as "ee" and /u/ as "ooh". It really drives me mad when I have to explain how to pronounce a particular word to a native English speaker using this unpractical method, this is just so irritating
Possible the person explaining is not the same person saying the words, she probably can't even speak the language. This is expropriation of language without compensation. Whom are you thanking between the two?
Tuli Franz Damn, calm down! The Xhosa woman probably volunteered to help with the pronunciation. Seriously, of all the things to be mad about, you’re angry that someone asked a native speaker to do the pronunciation...of their language. If this is expropriating a language, I would ask you to stop expropriating English, how dare you! Unless of course, you happen to be British. In which case, stop expropriating French!
Thank you for explaining so vividly exactly where the tongue is placed for the clicks. This was incredibly helpful!
I am Xhosa, and I am sure your content is very effective. I like how you understand your audience.
They have such an interesting language. Soooo unique... I finally am able to click while pronouncing "a" word 🤣🤣🤣. Molo Trevor!
