My dad explained the situation, including the fact Churchill insisted RAF losses be kept out of the papers for the reason of public morale. At my dad's wake old Bill stood to attention at the photo of my dad and saluted, then said "one of the best men I ever knew"". He sniffed (which is deep emotion for men of their generation) and walked off.
