    Great acting by even secondary characters
    Girdwood has the tic of a PTSD suffering behind the pomp and automation of the 'Prussian Fashion', while Lynch's self-repressed Irish accent breaks through at the same time as his confident facade

      Well given he was ambushed by Black Irish as a young officer (who probably did some dodgy things to him), not entirely surprised that the has PTSD. But to be fair, he was a good trainer by knowing all recruits by name and recognising when someone had served previously.

    I love that seeing Girdwood get ready again it shows how perfectly regimented and planned out his mornings go. Every step, even his assistant standing in the way of the mirror until Girdwood is ready to look at his reflection.

    There's an interesting paradox in the authorities to whom they refer to reinforce their positions:
    Girdwood representing the old guard, deeply and rigidly traditional reaching for a man in elected office.
    Sharpe representing the changing army and the slow emergence of meritocracy, modernization and professional soldiers reaches for the monarchy, a hereditary institution without a whiff of democracy about it.

    • @darkclawgreatonenas
      @darkclawgreatonenas Рік тому +1

      oh you wish...Girdwood got his command strictly because his backer just so happened to be Henry Simmerson. up until this point in his life, Girdwood's only victories had been poetic victories, not battlefield victories. the man was a mess of phobias, insecurities, corruption and general incompetence. in short, Girdwood is no soldier at all, just a ponce with a rich backer, well aware that he only got as far as he did BECAUSE of said backer.
      Sharpe...Sharpe got his command through a great deal of effort, not because he wanted it, but because of what his actions. Sharpe has many battlefield victories, is willing to learn from those who know more than him in various subjects, and even embraces new technology a few times. in short, Sharpe is an actual soldier, perhaps not a gentleman, but he knows his job and does it well.

      @@darkclawgreatonenasOh I'm aware of that. I'm just remarking on how the corrupt always know where the power lies, no matter how much they may play at being traditional.

      It's very interesting, and quite accurate too! Empowering the lower professional classes to combat the powers of entrenched aristocracy was something that was mutually beneficial for Monarchs and commoners. Even absolute monarchies would employ this tactic! At the end of the day, nobody likes middle management 😂
