About 6 years ago I was on the dole briefly and there was one sign-on where I'd failed to do my full 30-odd hours of provable, documented job-searching because I'd spent every other day for the last week dealing with a beloved family pet dying of pancreatic cancer, i.e. repeated vet visits, tests done, results back, terminal decisions made, etc. When I said my reason was the death of a pet, the instant response of the "adviser" was "No, no, no!" - utterly dismissing that as any kind of excuse. They stopped my dole as punishment. Luckily, I got a job the following week, so I never had to see that "adviser" again to say thanks for her understanding.
