    Two things I forgot to mention: Once we know the values of the Timing clutch, they will always be the same. So live in concert we will know the settings for each song without having to test it every time. “Song 3 = 13 steps +” etcetera. This one adjustment will make sure both that the treadle pedal and the crank hits 6 o clock on the rotation in time with the beat and also make sure that the rhythm machine and marble hits are synched.
    Yesterday I hit a milestone in the studio, I had a full marble loop with the whole marble lifting system working perfectly for the first time ever, including the conveyer belt, the two gear lifts and the demag wheel. The marble divider has been having an issue where the marbles got stuck on top and I found a super simple solve that reduced resistance for the rolling marbles and that worked instantly. I could have the kick drum playing and the marbles were picked up and transported all the way up. Its getting there. Thank you for following along!

      This makes me imagine him playing it on Pluto and it takes a whole minute for one marble to fall all the way onto an instrument, but the machine is still releasing them regularly so there is just a wall of slowly falling marbles that are still hitting the instruments at the right moment. Sadly they wouldn't gain enough momentum to be able to strike with the force to make audible music.

I could have the kick drum playing and the marbles were picked up and transported all the way up. Its getting there. This thing is so much harder to build than what it looks like at first glance. After the first machine I received many emails from people who told me they were building a marble machine of their own, I haven’t heard back from one of them yet, it tells me im not the only one struggling… Some problems on the MMX are self inflicted (you could argue all) but some problems are also just plain difficult. My understanding of engineering redundancy and tolerances is growing (slowly) and I believe I will be able to follow this through all the way up onto that stage. Its not happening fast but it is happening. Thank you for following along!

    It's funny but almost your exact problem occurs in internal combustion engines. Combustion takes a relatively fixed amount of time, so as engine speed increases you need the spark to come earlier before the piston reaches the top of the compression stroke to burn the fuel in the power stroke.

    Pretty sure you've already done the math, but this is the formula I found for the offset you have to apply:
    offset (degrees) = 3/500 * rpm (crank) * delay (ms)
    or:
    offset (steps) = 1/60000 * rpm (crank) * delay (ms) * n (total number of steps)

    • @ZakKarimjee
      @ZakKarimjee 5 років тому +9

      Once you've got the offset for a certain BPM you should also be able to calculate the offset for any other BPM, if you know the constant travel time of the ball to the drum!

    • @luicat9034
      @luicat9034 5 років тому +4

      I guess I can create some kind of online calculator website for Martin, but what is most important is that with the measurements on two BPMs and the exact degree offset, we can surely calculate the absolute timing delay from the command wheel to the audible drum, which will be useful for your equations!

    • @koosnaamloos4291
      @koosnaamloos4291 5 років тому +5

    Martin, assuming that the amount of steps on the clutch is directly proportional to the bpm, it looks like you can get the amount of steps needed by taking the bpm and dividing by around 4.8. Likewise, you could calculate how many steps you need to add/take away when changing bpm by dividing the change in bpm by about 4.8. This looks like it adds up with your tests in the video.
    Also, because the marbles accelerate when they fall, marbles with a longer falling distance (like the ones for the vibraphone compared to the kick) will take a little longer to fall and so will be offset by a different amount. You'd lose about 45ms in delay from releasing the marble 30cm above the target as opposed to 20. I'm not sure how important this is, because it should have been definitely noticeable in the first machine, so maybe it's not a huge issue. Humans are imperfect at this, so realistically perfection in this aspect is not essential.
    TL;DR Looks like you can divide the bpm by 4.8 to get how many steps you should move the clutch from the neutral position for synchronized playing.

    • @estelyen
      @estelyen 5 років тому +1

      @@chadjensenster I guess for the time being, he could just mute the Rythm Machine while doing a tempo change. Nobody will notice a few milliseconds delay/speed up in the other instruments if the underlying beat is muted. Also keep in mind, for this interval, he still has kickdrum, snare and hihat, which are affected in the same way as the other instruments since they're played with marbles. Once he returns to the song's original tempo, he can switch the Rythm Machine back on and it will be in sync angain.

    Question 1: You're calibrating the offset for the kick drum, but the distance from the marble release to the other instruments is different. With gravity being a constant but the bpm changing for different songs, you're going to still have a difference for when the marble hits other instruments like the bells or bass. If the marble drop distance were exactly the same for each instrument this would be perfect but with the distances varying, you'll have some minute variation. Right?
    Question 2: I presume you'll have to do a calibration check before playing each song live since it appears you might be able to get the calibration index out of phase if you don't return it back to zero every time. Without a hard stop you could conceivably keep rotating it in one direction and get confused. IE the number value on the index may be erroneous if you move it forward an entire count or bar.

    • @Elendrial
      @Elendrial 5 років тому +4

      IIRC he's built in adjustability for each channel's drop height, which should solve Q1.
      For Q2, again only iirc, there are only 64 bars, so with a ratio of 1:64 of programming wheel:hand crank (which I think is what he said in the video) this would make a full rotation of the timing clutch cause the song to move by exactly a bar, which wouldn't throw anything out.

  • @CornedBee
    @CornedBee 5 років тому +4

    Hm ... I see two potential issues here.
    1. The timing clutch gets between the rhythm machine and everything else, including the fishstair. The fishstair doesn't need adjustments; like the rhythm machine, it is fixed to the crankshaft movement and should never be off. The timing clutch breaks that connection; in the tests, you can clearly hear the clicking of the mechanics no longer lines up with the rhythm machine.
    2. The required programming wheel delay is a function of turn speed vs marble drop time. This means that in order for one fixed delay to work, all marbles in all channels have to have the same drop time, i.e. time from release to hitting the instrument. Can your system actually do this?

    • @JensGulin
      @JensGulin 5 років тому

      I'm not sure, but I believe those are solved problems.
      1. Which part of the video are you referring to? In ua-cam.com/video/CBfd0Tjii9Y/v-deo.html he seems to say that it *is* fixed to the crankshaft and thus not on the clutch. The clutch is there to offset the timing for the marble release only. If conveyor belt is also on the clutch, it should be fine as well. First step would be to align crank and conveyor, then use that setting as the base-line "zero" for the rest of the adjustments and hope it didn't change too much.
      2. Can't say where this has been covered before, but that should be a known requirement at any tempo so most probably in the design already for the first Marble Machine. The
      same "beat" in the musical program must hit respective instrument with proper timing. This can't be tweaked with the clutch.
      3. If there is a "computer delay" added for kick and snare compared to vibraphone, because the sound is actually processed rather than directly from mic, it should be unrelated to the BPM. Martin can adjust that by moving the drum closer to the release and get the hit slightly earlier. Each instrument can be adjusted like that in assembly. It may also be slightly modified in the computer as well. This was covered in the original MM videos I think. If he used he clutch to fix this now, he may redo it later.
      4. The video was possibly edited out of sequence. That may explain if it sounded off at some point in the video.
      7:36 ua-cam.com/video/CBfd0Tjii9Y/v-deo.html late, moves in one direction
      8:14 ua-cam.com/video/CBfd0Tjii9Y/v-deo.html still late, moves the other direction...
