    One of the best knot videos I've ever seen as for instruction, terminology and strength reduction occurring with knots.

    easily the best knot tutorial on YT. Other "survival" and such enthusiasts could take a knote (pun intended) on the clarity and quality of this simple but clear tutorial.

    Although it’s an older video it’s still a great teacher to all ages. I’d recommend this to show all boy’s & girl’s so they can learn “Basic Knot”, tying. Thanks for posting this video, from 1 old Sailor!

    A square knot is unstable and should not be used for any load-bearing lines (as a bend). It is good for packaging or reefing. I use it in bow form for shoe laces, packages, and tying a bow tie. When a bend is needed, either the sheet bend or the Carrick bend are far superior.
    I really appreciate it that you mention using an overhand loop at the beginning of the bowline and that you properly pronounce the bowline's name. A bowline does jam when under load, but is easily untied when not under load.
    Excellent job on the round turn and two half hitches. Your rolling hitch has more turns and half hitches than does Ashley but looks very secure.
    On the sheet (Becket) bend, it is important that the two working ends start and end on the same side of the knot. You tied it correctly but did not draw attention to the location of the working ends.
    The Carrick bend is, in my opinion, superior to the sheet bend. What you show is not a Double Carrick bend but a Carrick bend.
    A double Carrick bend is a decorative knot where the line is traced through the knot a second time resulting in parallel strands.

    Since most times a regular person needs to know something about tying knots is when you moving furniture, it would be very helpfull if every basic 101 on knots included the truckers hitch which is actually a combination of knots to tie something down very tight, very easily and securely and still be able to untie it very easily after. In it's simplest form it consists of two half hitches and the running knot.
    A sheet bend is simple enough and still superior to what the layman comes up with after a little think and that is almost always a overhand knot tie with both ends side by side as one. And that shit is impossible to untie when loaded.
    Or at the very least if a person is take only one knot away from any lesson on knots it should be the figure eight along with the instruction that any time you are about to tie an overhand, just go around one extra half turn and make a god damned figure eight at least so the next person stands a chance of untying it.

    Rolling hitch is so wrong, I'm merchant marine for 30 years, proper rolling hitch is used for directional pulls either left or right.

    Why does the over hand knot reduce the strength by 45%?

    • @russelltalker
      @russelltalker 5 років тому +1

      Because it's the simplest smallest knot so there is a very tight and small pinch point. When a line fails because of a knot it happens just outside of the knot as if the knot pinched it broken. So a knot which doesn't reduce the strength by very much will have several pinch points which are not very tight. Fishing knots are the strongest but not used with rope because that would be impractical and they are not meant to be untied at all. But they are super strong because they always consist of multiple wraps which look like many fingers wrapping around the line gripping gently individually but very strongly cumulatively.
