- The IXth British Commonwealth Games were held in Edinburgh, Scotland.
It was the first time the Games were held in Scotland, but the Games we also remembered for a number of other firsts. At the opening ceremony in Edinburgh for the 1970 British Commonwealth Games, it was the first time at an Olympics or Commonwealth Games that Australia had a female athlete as opening ceremony flagbearer.
Commonwealth Games champion hurdler Pam Kilborn was selected to lead the Australian team as flagbearer at the opening ceremony. Kilborn led out the 107 athletes competing for Australia at the Games. An iconic moment in both Commonwealth Games history and Australian sporting history.
