Ironic that people who talk about praying also consume whiskey.

@@CoffeeCoffeeCoffeeAndBooks Since you are Orthodox Christians, have you ever studied all of the Biblical references to alcohol/wine?

@@wallymorris686 Yes and we have discussed many of them with our priest. What references do you have that prohibit moderate consumption of alcohol?

@@CoffeeCoffeeCoffeeAndBooks Thanks for responding. Sorry for my delay - Busy schedule today. Although what a priest says may be interesting and even helpful, what a priest says is not what I asked. Have you personally studied all the Biblical references to alcohol and become acquainted with the historical/cultural background of alcohol use in Biblical times? The Bible did not prohibit consumption of certain alcoholic beverages for a simple reason: Beverage choices were limited and water was often unsafe. Beverage choices limited to milk, juices, and water. Wine was common, yet difficult to make. Wine was always diluted with water (2-4x dilution) to make the water safe and the wine last longer. "Strong drink" (which today's whiskey would be classified) was strongly discouraged and dangerous. Proverbs would be a good starting point. Today's alcoholic beverages are much stronger than those used in Biblical times. Distillation not invented until ~1,000 yrs after Christ. If you have never studied all the Biblical references to alcohol, then your beliefs/choices more reflect our modern culture than Biblical teaching. (The same as having opinions about marriage without studying what the Bible says about marriage but instead asking your priest what he thinks about marriage). The issue of alcohol is about more than what the Bible says about alcohol. The issue also involves choosing what is wise or foolish and also the influence on children and others. Although you may be able to consume alcohol in moderation, you do not have any guarantee that your children or others influenced by you will be able to do so. I would hate to be the indirect cause of someone developing a problem with alcohol, especially a child who thought alcohol was OK because of my example. The best and wisest choice in our time is abstention from alcoholic beverages. We have 100s of other beverage choices which are safe, healthy, and taste great without the dangers of alcohol. The best case you can make from the NT is drinking very diluted wine. Whiskey and similar alcoholic beverages fall outside the boundaries of Biblical examples and allowance. The real question is: Are you willing to let the Bible form your opinion on this subject or are you more influenced by our culture and your friends/priest?

@@wallymorris686 As I mentioned, we have studied the Bible thoroughly about many topics including alcohol consumption. We have asked our priest about the teachings of the Orthodox Church and the church fathers' interpretations of Biblical teachings. We talk to our children about alcohol consumption (among other things) and we never drink to excess. Many of the dangers you mention about abuse of alcohol could be attributed to food as well. How many people have diabetes or die from heart disease based on eating a diet filled with normal foods that children think are OK? Many people are quick to point to things like moderate consumption of alcohol as some heinous sin but disregard common things that are actually listed as sins like gluttony and slothfulness. The Bible forms our opinions and our behaviors. The Bible teaches against drunkenness and about alcohol consumption in certain situations, such as going to the temple, prayer, etc....and those rules we don't break. Proverbs mentions things like drinking in excess being wrong. What am I missing there? You mention the NT. The guests at the wedding in Cana were already drunk when Jesus turned the water into wine, weren't they? Does the Internet fall outside of the Biblical examples and allowances? How are we supposed to approach it? The Bible forms our opinions on our choices in life and I know of nothing that is taught in the Bible that goes against moderate consumption of alcohol. Can you point me to that?
