  • This is a unicellular dinoflagellate that is one of the species that create red tides when their numbers become very high during an algal bloom. Some species of dinoflagellates produce toxins that can build up to dangerous levels in filter feeding shellfish (ie. clams, mussels and oysters) during a bloom. Gonyaulax spinifera is known to produce yessotoxin.
It is the other dinoflagellates (Alexandrium, Gymnodinium, and Pyrodinium spp.) that create the saxitoxin that causes Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning.

Hello - what a good question. I'm not sure how to sum it up in a few words. I run a high school marine biology program and we were given a grant many years ago to purchase some higher-end digital microscopes and set up a cold-water marine aquarium with our local marine life. It's been a lot of fun working with the students (and I get to play too) where we can film all types of marine creatures and make videos for our web site and channel. Why the tiny things like Gonyaulax? Just curiosity I guess - I have always been fascinated that so much is packed into a single cell and it is always fun to film something in a way that no one else has quite captured or may be the first time some small local life form is ever filmed for the first time and placed on a video available to the public. Thanks for the question.
