This is an excellent cover of this wonderful David Bowie song. At times I like it better than the original but having grown up with Bowie I always remember the first time I heard the song. When Nirvana did this unplugged version I was pleasantly surprise how well a tribute it is. As far as I know Kurt Cobain wrote most of the Nirvana lyrics (would need to look it up), but obviously he didn't wrote these. Thank you for reacting to the all time classic!
Kurt wrote all of the lyrics and riffs except Scentless Apprentice and Marigold, he was considering using some of the first Foo Fighters songs before the end. Ironically Dave recorded the first album by himself in the same studio Nirvana recorded You Know You're Right for the last time.
So the acoustic guitar he was playing has a pickup. A pickup is what makes an electric guitar, "electric". He ran it through a distortion pedal to give it the edgy sort of breakup it get so it sounded like a distorted electric guitar. So while playing the song and strumming the chords he left the distortion off and it sounded like an acoustic guitar. When he played that little da-da-da-da-da-dum lick and the solo, he clicked on the distortion pedal. Kurt was playing guitar as was Pat Smear (red, white and blue guitar). Krist (the other guy) was playing bass. That of course is Dave Grohl playing drums
Kurt was the usual lyricist for Nirvana, however, as others have said, this was a David Bowie cover. They choose to do a lot of covers for this unplugged which was both extremely smart and creative.
“I was simply blown away when I found that Kurt Cobain liked my work, and have always wanted to talk to him about his reasons for covering ‘The Man Who Sold the World’” and that it was a good straight forward rendition and sounded somehow very honest. It would have been nice to have worked with him, but just talking with him would have been real cool.” -David Bowie
This is a cover of a David Bowie song.....a great cover at that. Electronic effects/pedals can drastically change the sound of a guitar.....or any instrument for that matter. Check out some Pearl Jam Unplugged or Alice in Chains Unplugged
As you're now aware, this is a cover of David Bowie's 1970 classic from the album of the same name. The 'story' is of a man who in effect meets himself - on 'the stairs'; he's having a conversation with himself, hence one version of himself metaphorically 'died a long time ago'. The song title comes from a Robert Heinlein novel, The Man Who Sold the Moon.
I remember David Bowie saying he was shocked that Kurt had chosen his song to cover. He also wished he'd had a chance to talk to Kurt about it and find out why, exactly. I get the impression that regret never went away. And that's probably appropriate, when it comes to Kurt. I'm not into celebrity culture at all, and I'm not even that big into music. But somehow Kurt's death felt oddly personal. I think a lot of people feel that way and don't know why, even people finding him now -- decades after his death. It felt like a mistake, like we all accidentally slipped into the wrong timeline. Sometimes I have this feeling that there are only actually 5 or 6 real people in the world, and he was one of them.
Bowie influenced so many artists that you can find covers in a lot of bands. Here Kurk embroiders it, as if it were his own theme. Dare yourself with the cover of Space Odity by Smashing Pumpkins. And you'll tell me. Keep on rocking beautiful lady.❤
In MTV's Unplugged Nirvana covered a lot of their favorite artists. Jeez, I'm guessing less than half of them were actually Curt Cobain composed songs LOL. Great performance though. You should react to the last song of the concerti - Where Did You Sleep Last Night.
This a an amazing cover. The emphasis is totally different from the spiritually hopeful David Bowie original. This is melancholy, about loss. It’s beautiful in its own right. Great reaction
@@daniellastuart3145 Yeah, not even close. Bowie had better musicians, was a much better vocalist, had more creative and complex arrangements (compared to Nirvana’s ragged garage band version), and Kurt even botched the lyrics.
Lovely reaction ❤👍🏻 Please check out King by Marillion 🙏 🙏🙏. The singer about this song: "But I think this song is mostly inspired by Kurt Cobain's suicide notes. I have never met him, but I felt very close to him in some ways. The last ever Nirvana gig was at Munich's Terminal 1. From there the band travelled to Rome and stayed at the Cavalieri Hilton, one of my favourite hotels. Cobain took an overdose in his hotel room and I could just about imagine him there, I could see the hotel room, the bathroom, the furniture... They then flew Cobain back to America, where as you all know he shot himself. Marillion was the first band to go on stage at Terminal 1 after Nirvana. I was the first to take centre stage and it was a very weird sensation. There I was, dressed as a bloody priest walking up to the centre of the stage and it was as if I was following a ghost... A most peculiar situation!"

David Bowie and Kurt Cobain can sing this as a duet in the After-Life

That guitar Kurt is playing is now the worlds most expensive guitar.

Acoustic guitars can make that sound if they have a pickup attached, which basically makes it electric.
Well, they also need guitar pedals
