What's a microphonic bass guitar pickup sound like? Sterling Stingray Ray4HH

- If you've ever wondered about what the heck people mean by "microphonic" pickups here's a great example. This is my brand new Sterling by Musicman Stingray Ray4HH 4 string bass. I noticed a weird and annoying percussive sound in some of my playing. I've narrowed it down to the pickups.
3:12 insane right hand technique wowz ❤
I had the 5 string version of the same bass. I wish I never sold it. Played and sounded great.
I have a Ray5 HH with the same issue. Wax potting the pickups tonight. I’ll report back!
Mine's been on my kitchen bar for 2 weeks. I have it ready to de-solder and just haven't done it. I have the GulfWax ready even. Was thinking maybe I'll do just one pickup first. I like the bass enough that I'd consider putting in a full Seymour Duncan pickup set and preamp if wax potting sucks. I lucked out and managed to get the bass on sale a little while ago for like $300. I have my fingers crossed for it working out for you. Good luck!
Did you open yours up and freak out like I did when you say the 14 lug 5 way switch :) I have the wax on stove now and am just about ready to submerge the pickup. I'm doing just the neck pickup first. If it dies or doesn't work, I think all of the electronics are coming out and a whole Seymour Duncan setup it going in.
@@kubicki2000 I saw that switch and went “nope” and clipped the wires to the pickups and just spliced and soldered them back in.
I didn’t have luck with mine. No real appreciable improvement. I may not have done it correctly and hopefully you have better luck.
Make sure you get the black rtv or whatever that sealant is cleaned out. It melted on me and made a mess.
@@kubicki2000 friend what I did was sell the bass, a technician informed me that the pickups were not well finished and had to be changed
@@rubensalazar4003 If this doesn't work I play to go with a couple of Seymour Duncan's and a Duncan preamp . My bass plays fine. I really like the tone but not so much the noise. I only paid around $300 on sale and if I go the Duncan route I think I'll have $550 or so in it. Would be worth it.
I just to have one stingray like that one but on a different color. I hate that noise and also on the position 2 and 4 on the pick-up selector the sound was really low. It was a nice and comfortable instrument but I hate those two issues and ended selling it.
Greetings, I liked watching your video because I bought that same bass and I'm learning and I had to give the bass to a luthier because I couldn't adjust the action. The luthier informed me that he had a problem in the joint between the neck and the body. And I tell you that I have the same hollow sound in the coils that is annoying and additional unpleasant, it came to me with a blow to the body, what a bad purchase. and it seems very heavy to me, for me it is not a good bass. If you know how to silence the noise of the HH let me know since I will not buy new Humbuckers
I did hear you talking through the pickup
🎯
I recently bought one of these and noticed the same thing. Have you waxed it? Did it resolve the issue?
I haven't done it yet. I planned to use that bass in a video today but was having problems with recording the amp for whatever reason. I gave up and went to Kroger to get some GulfWax (easily available paraffin wax) and of course they were out :( I'll need to venture out somewhere else and get some. Probably going to use some sort of double-boiler setup to melt the wax.
I started the teardown yesterday. Have you ever looked at the 5 way switch in these? It has 24 lugs! I found a factory wiring diagram that looks correct and is helping me make sense of things before I de-solder anything.
@@kubicki2000 the only mod I've done to the bass was file out the nut to accommodate BEAD tuning. I haven't opened up it yet. It was going to be a Christmas holiday project. The last guitar I switched pickups on, I just cut the wire and added a connector so I could swap pickups easier in the future. Good luck, I'm really hoping it makes a difference. I asked lowendlobster in the comments of one of his Ray4 mod videos and he was skeptical that it would resolve anything as they already look wax potted but maybe there are some air pockets that need filling. The pickups aren't too bad, The finger noise and pickup tapping sound is annoying but I've blasted it through 500watts and it wasn't squealing like a crap guitar pickup will but maybe that is not a thing that happens with bass pickups?
@@60degreelobwedge82i have a ray4 HH and its microphonic but it only comes out when i use a distortion pedal but then it squeals badly. I use a guitar distortion pedal tho.
Yea I herd it breaker breaker 1 9
He used to work in Costco Milton Keynes, serving hot dogs lol
I cant find the new vid. Did you wax pot them or change them out? Thanks
I wax potted one of the 2 pickups. I've been struggling to rewire it correctly forever now and almost gave up. I just this week bought a Cobra blue Ray4HH with a maple board. I can use it to check my wiring. I have also figured out that I need to unscrew the 20 lug switch so I can pull it out a bit to better see what the heck I am doing.
@i2000 wow, that sounds like Hell. Im looking to buy my first Bass and this is the one I was looking at(the new ALL black one just came out. Only the tuners are silver). I really was starting to covet it(which usually means "take my money") I guess Ill go back to >>trying
@@kubicki2000I've had a few Yamaha basses and they've all had microphonic pickups too, so annoying. Did you notice the same issue with your new Ray 4 HH?
Did you try this
