    This is really helpful. I started about `4 weeks ago and am a fish outta water with this kata. I have been trying to read the book and it suddenly dawned on me to look over some UA-cam videos. This has been the best of the ones I've seen. Thank you.

    This is a very good instructional video. I studied Shorin-Ryu Karate in my youth and was a part time instructor. Our dojo also added some Kempo to our program, which helps mold the Karate into some practical street fighting skills. I knew all 5 Heian Katas, but have forgotten some of the moves. Videos like this help me get things back in order. When you get up there in age Karate is a great way to stay in shape, maintain good balance and achieve some inner piece. Put together a program with kicks, punches, blocks and kata and you have a very good workout.

    With respect to move 2 and 5, what do you believe is that strike's application? I've got the Best Karate book by M Nakayama and Karate Do Kyohan by Funakoshi, and I'm yet to find a video of Heian Nidan on UA-cam that corrolates with the text. Videos appear to show the strike being direct to the opponents torso, but in the text the strike is directed from the side like a hammer fist. Gichin Funakoshi writes in his book (move 2) "As you pull the left fist toward the front of your right shoulder, your hand moves in the shape of a half circle and delivers a strong blow" with an accompanying note: "The idea is that you pull your opponent closer to you with your left hand and deliver a blow from the side with your right hand", and in Nakayama's book he writes "strike to left side with hammer fist...". So in neither text is the strike delivered to the front of an opponents body.

      My exam is in eight days and I need to perfect this. I haven't even gotten a solid grip on the whole kata yet. My advice as a yellow belt, learning the kata should be one of the highest priorities for completing the exam (which means understanding the movements in it obviously). Learn it inside out

    • @ScarletNight001
      @ScarletNight001 8 років тому

      Grumpy Jumper Mines is at the end of the month, One of the highest priories? I'll be sure to remember that! Also um.. since you're a yellow belt, I need to ask, Im having a bit of trouble when kicking where Im pivoting and everything; turning my hips, using speed and the force that I have and still its not really that great .-. My kicks are kinda weak although they go high, they're weak, even my hands have more power, Im not sure why this is.

    • @grumpyjumper3801
      @grumpyjumper3801 8 років тому

      +Phoenix By now, you should know the normal round house, the front snap, front thrust, side snap, side thrust, and back kick, or the majority of them. I have advice on each kick, but I'm not sure you want to read an entire essay on kicks. Can you specify what types of kicks you are learning? Some tips don't necessarily go with other kicks. But I can tell you this; speed and fluidity are more important than height. I would practice kicks at the body to make sure I'm able to send a relatively hard blow there rather than a weak kick to the face.

    • @ScarletNight001
      @ScarletNight001 8 років тому

      Grumpy Jumper Well, I know front kick, round house, back kick, side kick, (Learning tornado roundhouse) Speed... well im trying on that lol D: I want to be able to kick high with extreme power ya know? T-T But i'll take your advice on body kicks rather than face kicks since im just starting, Im about 2 months in so far.

    • @grumpyjumper3801
      @grumpyjumper3801 8 років тому +1

      +Phoenix Tip to the front, side, and roundhouse kicks: lead with the knee, then extend the leg. Sounds basic but many don't do it. Devastating kick to the face? Gotta get that knee up. Stretch a lot (not too much) and it will help you move those legs without so much resistance. Idk about the tornado though, I've not heard of such a move in my dojo 0.0. On a less strict note, exercise legs a lot. Squats, calf raises.
