Lot of people are talking about the cost of this game. Just a heads up, check with your local library. I'm a librarian and we circulate board games, RPGs, and purchase tactical miniature games like this for in-house play. We have the Stark v Lannister and the Night's Watch Start Sets. This overview is included with the material we circulate. Just wanted to thank Rodney and Pep for putting this material out. It is always a huge benefit to libraries.
funny how Rodneys videos are much better then CMON videos on presenting the rules of the game...I think they just should hire you as a regular
7 years later, I'm still coming back to this video to learn how to play the basic game. I know the rules have changed somewhat but I'm only interested in playing the vanilla kickstarter version with a friend. Been a long, long time since I've played. Thanks Rodney for these excellent instructional videos.
Yeah, I think the rules changed quite a bit between this video and the final release, but hopefully it still helps.
"Winds of Winter has a secret deck". For lovers of the books, that's perfect! But would be better if the secret deck was always going to be made available "next year"! Great video!

I'm way late to seeing this video, but I wish I had seen it sooner. This is by far the best video showing the gameplay of this game, and it is the first that actually makes me want to play it.

This game IS Warhammer Fantasy Battle (WHFB) with political intrigue & some arguably simpler/better rules. Of course all of us know that it has turned into Kings of War as Games Workshop no longer supports it. When I see a game like this it makes me think that CMON might be targeting that hole in the market for a ranked units tactical game. With the IP of Game of Thrones I think that they're hoping to bring people in that may not know that they'll like miniature war gaming. The game is already set up to use a lot of the terrain that war-gamers have sitting around or that your LGS has available that's not getting as much use these days. The game looks like it'd be an ok game for those that want a single table top experience as well. The average Warhammer game takes between 2-3 hours and something tells me that this will be a bit of a time commitment which may put off some board game players that are aiming for that 1-hour experience.The main challenge I see is that other companies have tried to break into the mini war gaming realm and it's a tough market. I still have a bunch of GW LOTR stuff up in my closet because it's daunting to think about painting up all those units for a game that no one plays. Other games like X-Wing, Warmachine, Malifaux, Infinity, and Relic Knights are skirmish based which means a lower model count. Less models is a lot easier for me to deal with and it feels more like every model on the table matters. I played WHFB for many years and although having a fully painted army on the table looked great and made me feel good, it didn't feel good to see units which were essentially cannon fodder. This game is a high model count game and features a lot of the tactics that you use in WHFB, I hope it does well and I'll probably throw in on it.Here's some of the things I notice that this game fixed from WHFB. Movement is a lot better and makes more sense. In WHFB your unit could only charge units that it could see and it could only see in its front arc. That's like saying a people can't look to their flank. In SoIF you get a lot of free wheels which means that you can always charge something if you're close enough. They also included variable charges although failing every charge 1/6 times might not be a great gameplay mechanic. Combat rolls seem to be much more efficient needing only rolls to do damage and rolls for saves whereas WHFB needs 3 rolls for every exchange. Morale tests will make more sense as they want high numbers compared to WHFB wanting low numbers. There's no confusing retreats where you lose control of your unit, you choose when to retreat and when you lose combat you just lose more models. It's also arguable that the magic in WHFB is replaced with the much more engaging political intrigue in SoIF.
People don't like that the factions are all humans and that there isn't any magic. I couldn't care less about that sort of stuff because I'm a ASOIAF fan as well as Warhammer. I would appreciate a game without overpowering magic spells.

I generally agree with you. I'm a big WHFB fan that is still mourning its demise. I am interested in FFG's Runewars Miniatures Game and CMON's SoIF Miniatures games because they are both board game companies trying to capitalize on in that ranked miniatures battle niche that was abandoned by GW. However, after watching several reviews of both games, neither Intellectual Property interests me as much as Warhammer and neither game appears they will adequately scratch my Warhammer itch. I wish both of them well, but I'll stick with 8th Ed. until further notice (it still has much to offer....if I can find opponents).

The game isn't the hard part.
The hard part is finding someone ELSE who was willing to take out a second mortgage to pay for their own set.
One copy of the game is enough for two players, unless I'm missing something.
One day someone will make a miniatures skirmish/war game with some kind of AI or app and I'll be all-in.
Until then, I agree, it's hard to invest heavily when you're not sure if you'll find other players.

Looks Pretty Good! Gonna have to back this : ))) The quality of the Figs and the Quantity you get make this a Great deal for the minis Alone.
On top of that we also get all the unlocked stretch goal miniatures and this thing is gonna blow through quite a few of those!
Its already exceeded its funding goal and the sun hasn't even set on day 1 of 23!
This game looks really fun! When I first read A Game of Thrones in 2014, I really wished for a tabletop miniatures game of these great armies. Can't wait until I can afford the starter game! I also really like how you guys imagine the story as opposed to just thinking about the numbers.

First of all...awesome production Rodney.
I'm quite surprised by the negative feedback. I dabble in miniature games and play quite a few board games. I have a couple of Warhammer Fantasy armies collecting dust. This system actually seems great and I say that as someone who usually prefers non-tray miniature games like Infinity or 40k. The off the map influence board seems neat and thematic and the tactics cards are great. The minis also look great and the I&F IP is nice as well. I love that all the information is on the cards no extra ramy or rulebooks to consult.
My gut feeling is that this game will have some depth and be reasonably easy to explain. I wasn't really a huge fan of the original Zombicide and still think it's a bit stale (I enjoy Black Plague a good bit more). This looks a lot more like Blood Rage on the "will the mechanics be lame or fun" scale of things.
I am very worried about balance though.
Did you end up giving it a try?
I really hope my local store gets into this. I miss playing wargames but quite after Age of Sigmar came out for Warhammer. This might be enough to lure me in.

@@WatchItPlayed I am into Bolt Action and not at all into Warhammer but this seems like a more fun to play than Warhammer and in a setting that might entice non-tabletop gamer friends to try :)

Those are actually picture frames, on their side with the glass removed (and fabric put in their place :) ). Glad you liked the video!

How many points were spent on the armies in the video and how many points does the system support?
25 Point armies were shown here. For larger battles you can go much higher.
What is, roughly, the highest point value you can build with the units in the box? Thanks!
Jim Auer people who pledge the "Hand of the King" get all that you see in the video, plus an extra unit each of both Sworn Swords and Lannister Guardsmen, PLUS a ton of attachment characters and Noon Combat Unit Characters PLUS four full new units that haven't been featured here. CMON has a pretty proven track record for delivery, but it will be available at retail as well, so you've got options!
Great video! A couple of questions!
How big are the infantry bsses? How big are the cavalry bases? How big are the trays? How big are the terrain pieces?
And near the end the Stark side used a card with Robs abillity, even though he was dead by then, so are the card abillities disconnected to the need of having the designated unit left of the board?

Hey Kallstrom, after shooting the video, we had to send the prototype pieces back, so I can't do any measurements for you, I'm afraid.
The cards in your tactics deck are based on the Commander you started with. If the Commander dies, you only lose the specific Commander attachment card (not the tactics cards as well).

Hey dovm you have to buy the game or can you just buy units with cards etc?
I believe the base set comes with all of the tokens and tools you'd use to measure and track the game, but you can buy individual units with their cards as well. Some units may be exclusive to the main core set.
The way this game is packed in the box reminds me of the Conan game from a few years back. Can anyone tell me if they are 28 mm and how do they compare size wise and proportions to whiz kids or reaper bones or even the Conan game miniatures? Any help would be deeply appreciated thank you
The version I had at the time was the kickstarter prototype, so I don't have those now to check for you, I'm afraid.

Would it be worth buying two core sets for some of the scenarios or is one core set enough?
More core sets allows you to play bigger armies, but I refrain from trying to assess the worth for our viewers, as that will come down to your individual interests.
How did you use Robs ability when he had earlier dies?
Tactics cards the Commander adds to your deck are not removed when the commander dies - just the card specifically for that character, which was attached to the unit.
Can a fallen commander be revived and added back to a unit or are they eliminated completely from the game? Thanks!
The cards we saw didn't seem to have an effect like that, but I wouldn't count out the possibility in the future.
I seriously don't understand the beef people have with this game. Maybe most of the people disliking it aren't into wargaming ? As a wargamer, see no problem with this game.
Every game will always have people who don't like it and people who love it. Just the way it goes. Enough different types of games for everyone's particular interests :)
Just from. Being on the Kickstarter before changing my mind (I own to many wargames I don't have time for) a lot of people still think it's a board game and don't know what wargaming is. I think it looks amazing and if I had a grand to drop on it and had people near me interested in it id have two decent sized armies. It's very 8th edition Warhammer and CMON did a great job making it their own. I love the added tactics cards.
See, I had to pick between this and the new lord of the rings game today, and I honestly prefer this. It's so thematic and more tactical! It feels like some just wanted another "we smash you" style game.
Ps. I also feel like the LotR mini game was just warhammer Tolkien edition

Hey Rodney. Long time no speak. How have you been? Just out of curiousity two questions. One for the game is How does the game end? Is it like Warhammer where you play x amount of rounds, then compare scores? Or can you do Warhammer 40K style which is you can play until annihilation of the other army? O.k. so three questions. :P Next question is, Where's luke? Did he lose interest in helping you make vids, or did life take over, and made him busy? O.k. four questions. I apparently can't count. :)
I don't know the rules for all the modes of play. For the scenario we were playing here - it's a set number of points (or you could wipe the other team out).
Luke is getting older and so his time is much less free (and the videos are very time consuming), but as he's able and the game suits, he'll be back I'm sure.
And do the other sets on the page come with it to?
The stretch goals get unlocked as more money is donated to the project.
Some sets will automatically come with the kickstarter when you back it at the regular amount because they got unlocked. OTehre are called "add-ons" and cost extras.
From some of your questions I've seen posted here, I think perhaps you aren't familiar with how Kickstarters work, and that's a big enough topic that I can't really explain it all in the comments of this video. You might find it helpful to do a couple of quick google searches on common questions about Kickstarter, which can probably give you the help you need.
Nice game if you're a game of thrones person and a wargamer i think you would buy it., And $150 is nothing compared to the cost of other wargames.

Expensive game.. not one to add to my collection anytime soon, but in the long run, I have seen the CMON demo before and now I understand more about the game, so looking forward to buying it in the future. :D
Jaime can kill any unit attachment, even a commander on a 3+? Stuff like that is an auto-"nope not buying" for me!

I was miffed about it too but then I thought about it and all it's going to do is make you think a little harder about how to engage his unit. The only reason Jaime got the free shot in this video is because his Halberdier unit was charged from the front, triggering their special ability. Obviously that wasn't a good idea tactically but this video was just for demonstration purposes. You could throw lots of units with no attachments at him, soften him up with ranged units before delivering a decisive charge from the flank, etc. It makes sense from a theme standpoint too because in the books Robb openly avoided direct, 1v1 conflict with Jaime and wasn't even shy about it.

did the rules changes this much since the demo of CMON convention? flanking and charging was different with auto hits. and failed morale made you lose an entire rank

That's the price it shows for it. Seems similar to other prices I've seen online too.
I guess it's to be expected. CMON don't make cheap games. But the price tag has discouraged me. Rather just play Battlelore. But the politicians in this game add a nice dimension. As do the customization of the unit squads.
What's the measure of miniatures? Like 28mm ,32mm or?

Watching this because I'm thinking of buying it now. But for any of you MTG players, you know how much the keyword Banding triggered me.

I know this is just licensed fodder, but how and why is a model on a battlefield influencing politics
Sorry if that wasn't clear in the video, but models like Cersai and Catelyn influence the politics of the world, which trickles down to effects on the battlefield (not the other way around).
This is far from licensed fodder. Judging from the rulebook it's going to be one of the best licensed games out there.

CMON is losing their way. Number one, too expensive. Number two, I'm never playing a game where I push a tray around the table. Nope.
matthlowder I'm not sure if you are aware that there is a big segment of gamers who play only miniature games in the style of Runewars, Warhammer 40k, StarWars: X-Wing, StarWars: Armada. Those systems are all expensive. This game is for them.
I'm sure Matt was just speaking from his own point of view, about his personal preferences. There will be many people who won't find this too expensive, and who won't be bothered by the trays. That's the nice thing about this hobby, what one person can't stand, someone else will adore. Lots of great options for everyone's particular interest.
TheMrE respect for the lovers of this style. I know all about minis. I like Malifaux, but that's as far as I go in that gaming medium. I can't see getting this to the table in my personal group regularly enough to merit the cost. Cheers, everybody.

Is there too much sex in this game? There is in the television series.
We came across no sex in the game. Everyone is also fully clothed. Can't speak to future models.
Watch It Played well, this comes from the books, while the mandatory naked ladies belong to HBO, I believe
