    Thank you for the video ! I was hesitated to take it apart, but after watching your video, it gave me a little assurance that things won't fly apart when i open up the control box. I have it opened now and waiting for the switch to come in. In the mean time, I grease up all of the movable parts and and ready for the next 20 more years 😂.

    Thanks, saved me a headache. Mine looks slightly different but close enough. It was assembled incorrectly before I got it and the throttle wouldn't move at all.
    I screwed the advance lever into place first and moved it back and forth while putting the main plate on. That helped it go into the groove a lot easier.

    Thank you so much for the vídeo. It gives me an idea of what to expect. I lost my key and had to open to ser the Ignition key code. Luckily I got the key. You have the code in the border of the Ignition body. And I took the chance to grease all. Mine was 1994 and it still works fine, they were good ones. Greetings from Argentina!!

    Thanks for doing the video. At 2:08 I found a better way. Instead of trying to put the cover onto the spring cog which is impossible, I took the part it fits into and installed that first into the cover then put the cover on. Piece of cake.

    the first 3 bolts you undo to take unit off the boat are they screwed into black housing or should just slide out. mind a stuck solid. any thoughts on how to remove if they just slide out i have put nut back on and wacked but not joy. cheers

    Cool insight. Not just right what I wanted to see here. I'm curious as to finding the part number or dimensions of the roller that sits on the U-shaped canal on the shifter mechanism. The groove is about 12mm wide but the knob on gas side is much thinner, pretty sure there is supposed to be a bearing of some sort there.
    HOX: If you take the entire mechanism apart, take care when installing the shifter mechanism (the mechanism on the bottom, one with the U-groove) so that the neutral switch doesn't break. You have to make sure to press in the small red button, if you install it on top of it it will break as you screw the assembly back together. (Neutral switch seen on video at 2:22 , its the gray small box right behind the black plastic cover bit)

    On the fast idle what do I have to manipulate to put it in the proper alignment? I may have moved it on disassembly. I have to replace the ignition switch, that's why I'm in there lost key, and I'm a green horn on mechanics. I like your vid and the stills of the control unit. Take care.

    I just bought a boat with this controller for a 1996 mercury 90 hp. The fast idle lever does not work. Is this a electronic idle and what could be the cause of this issue.
    Thanks

    • @Lsailor169699
      @Lsailor169699  7 років тому

      Thanks for watching my video Pat! No, it is not an electronic idle. First, make sure your carbs are set at the proper RPM. Then it is all a mater of adjusting the cables on the engine. Take a look at this video: ua-cam.com/video/J9-u8c09s_0/v-deo.html
      All the fast idle does is push the cable a little bit further than the normal throttle. You might like my other videos on Mercury outboards and other things. Just type Lsailor1 in the UA-cam search bar. Like them? Subscribe for the latest! Best, The Sailor.

      Thanks for watching my video Pat! No, there is not an electronic idle. All the fast idle lever does is advance the cable a little bit. I would make sure that the controller is well greased, buy some new cables and take a look at these two videos:

    Love your videos. I have a 1990 mercury 50elpto 3cyl. lately I have a no spark condition. also when I activate the kill switch the motor will still crank and turn. disconnected kill switch wire same thing. will crank and turn but not start due to no spark. what could be the issue? thanks

    • @Lsailor169699
      @Lsailor169699  4 роки тому

      Thanks for watching my video! While I am not closely familiar with your engine I have some suggestions. Test the kill switch for continuity. If it is bad, you need a new one. Likewise for the neutral start switch. An engine that old may have bad ignition coils. Here is my video on how to check them: ua-cam.com/video/dXBe_T6MuLo/v-deo.html If you go to marineengine.com, you may be able to find schematics on where these items are located for testing. Also a great place to get new parts. Good luck! Best, The Sailor.

    Do you have to dissemble completely to check buzzer? No buzzer when turn key and no buzzer with I disconnected oil tank wires. Thinking my buzzer might be bad or I have bad connection.

    • @Lsailor169699
      @Lsailor169699  7 років тому

      Thanks for watching my video Jeff! Sorry to hear about your problem. You have two ways to check the buzzer. Take apart the controller and jump it with 12 Volts. The other way is to refer to the wiring diagram and disconnect the wires at the tank and jump those with 12 volts. I would recommend taking apart the controller. That way, you are right there to replace it. If it is good, you have a wiring fault somewhere between the buzzer and the tank. Best, The Sailor.

    • @jeffscroggs2584
      @jeffscroggs2584 7 років тому

      So... took it apart. No power at buzzer. Unhooked wires for oil tank still nothing. Took buzzer off and put 12v to it and it worked. Wiggled and wiggled wires near switch and it started working. Found what I think was the bad connection and pulled apart and tighten and got to work steadily. I started putting it back together (tight fit for wires). checked again before putting cover on and now nothing no matter what I do I gets nothing. I'm afraid one of the connections might have grounded out when put back. Buzzer still works with 12v. Is there a fuse somewhere or could I blew something else?

    • @Lsailor169699
      @Lsailor169699  7 років тому

      Good for you Jeff! There is a fuse on the cover plate on the side of the engine. I would try using dielectic grease on ALL connections. After 21 years, there is bound to be corrosion. Another alternative (I HIGHLY suggest) that I did to my motor is to get rid of the oil injection system entirely. You have to mix your oil and gas, but you will know that it will ALWAYS get the lubrication it needs. Best, The Sailor.

    • @jeffscroggs2584
      @jeffscroggs2584 7 років тому

      Thanks but none of it makes sense. Everything I read now says a solid beep would be temperature sensor not oil and if it was oil sensor then unplugging the light blues wires under tank should make it stop not start. Do you an easy way that should make the alarm sound? I'm thinking more that it might be my alarm module and bad a connection. I plan to grease all connections like you suggested.

    • @Lsailor169699
      @Lsailor169699  7 років тому

      I know this goes against what you would think, but I totally disconnected the buzzer and tossed it. Without oil injection; not necessary. Since it is also is used for overheating, by the time it buzzes, the damage will already have been done. The best thing you can do is look at the cooling stream from the water pump. Not there? Day on the water is over...Best, The Sailor.

    my boat has the same setup. my throttle cable needs to be fixed but when I try to take this off the screws just spin in place. I suspect the fiber glass is striped. however I don't understand why it's still in there so tight if the screws just spin?

    • @Lsailor169699
      @Lsailor169699  7 років тому

      Thanks for watching my video Cody! What you want to do is take off the entire backing wood plate that it is attached to. In my case, it is the white vinyl covered wood you see in the picture. When you do that, you can get to the nuts that the screws are attached to and use a wrench/vice grips to hold them. You may like my other videos. Just type Lsailor1 in the YouTUbe search bar. Sailor, at the 2:28 mark there's a large t shaped plastic shield or guard that fits under the cable holder and has 2 screw hole, what is that for? Im working on a Quicksilver unit from 2003 and it fell out during take down. It looks from the bend that it goes some where behind or in front of the shift control. What is it supposed to guard against? Great video

      Thanks for watching my video and your nice comment Mr. Binx! It is called a "seperator" and is number 48 on the following diagram. www.marineengine.com/parts/mercury-marine-accessory-parts/remote-controls-and-components/1994-up/commander-2000-remote-control-16900-series I believe it does seperate, but it also acts as a "lubricant" to let the parts slide on. Lsailor1, I have this same exact remote, my throttle keeps getting hung up in reverse and I have to take this apart, put it back together and it works fine in forward. As soon as I click it into reverse it's stuck there and won't go forward.. I don't remember seeing the plastic collar you mention at 3:38.. could this be the reason why?
    Thanks.

    • @Lsailor169699
      @Lsailor169699  7 років тому

      Thanks for watching my video Jacob. I would suspect that the foot gear case might be the problem. Make sure there is enough fluid there. Then disconnect the throttle cables at the engine. See if you can manually put the engine in reverse. If that is OK, I would suspect the cables themselves. Might want to look at this video.

      Appreciate you watching my video Karl! The fast idle lever has a direct connection to the throttle cable and just "pushes" it to increase the RPMs. See this link:www.dropbox.com/s/xtq2t0daas96uh4/Fast%20idle.jpg?dl=0
      You probably need to go back in and make sure that the area in the big red circle is set properly and that you have plenty of grease throughout. This page might help as well.: www.marineengine.com/parts/mercury-marine-accessory-parts/remote-controls-and-components/1986-thru-1993/commander-2000-remote-control. Is your idle RPMs fine? If not, you need to go to the engine and reset the "barrel" to increase/decrease the RPMs. Best, The Sailor.

      My pleasure! At 2:13 you can see the fixed cog (without grease). It fits into a half oval (that you can see at the top of the time points you mentioned) and I believe there are two (one at the top and one at the bottom that is covered by grease). The pin on the circle (top red circle) fits into the idle arm I believe. It has been about 5 years since I did the video. When you take it apart, you will see how it goes. Take LOTS of pics as you take it apart! Best, The Sailor.

    thanks to the video I have found my problem. The issue I have is that although I can switch gears easily and use fast idle(all the while seeing the throttle cable move), I do not have the ability to have WOT. about 1/4 of the way up the throttle seems to stick horribly and a small "pop" sound happens as if the throttle linkage is jumping off the cam bearing. I take apart the control box and don't see anything out of place. after watching your video (at 2:25) you mention not to lose the plastic washer to the left of the box..... well apparently I did. Thanks for watching my video! Fast idle is used for warming up the engine quickly. If you try to just immediately start out, the engine will die because it is not warm enough.
